James Bond

That's a great idea to put up posters from the Bond films. I've been slowly working on putting images of the Fleming Bond novels up as well (I have a complete set including a few rare editions (see the Casino Royale article)). I have no personal preference whether the poster goes at the top or the novel image does so if you want to move the novel images farther down the page, feel free (i.e. in the case of Man with the Golden Gun). Bond followup

I think the vehicles page is pretty cool. There's a lot of info I wasn't aware of, though as always I'm sure it can be expanded. With regards to placing the movie boxes, I think that's fine. My only concern is some articles start with the book and then go on to the movie, while other articles go the other way around. There may be some who take exception to the movies leading the source material, but as long as the source material is acknowledged I don't see a problem. I agree standardized sections detailing movie and book differences would be terrific to have. I have read all the Fleming Bonds and the novelizations and am about 1/2 way through the Gardners so I could probably do little pieces on each. Problem is I simply don't have the time. It may seem like I do given the number of revisions I do here, though! ;-) Still, I think it's an excellent idea. It is preferable to making separate articles for movie and book versions, although I personally made an exception to this by creating a separate article for the Octopussy and The Living Daylights collection which is the only Fleming Bond book that stands apart from the movies (as opposed to For Your Eyes Only which had its complete title used for a movie). 23skidoo 06:05, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Novel infobox followup

Re: using a novel infobox on Die Another Day et al for novelizations. I think I will since these are books of interest. I will also add a second novel infobox for Spy who Loved Me and Moonraker, so there will actually be do infoboxes on those pages. BTW note the correction I made to the movie infobox for Golden Gun; we should make sure to credit the scriptwriters. I have a complete list and can add those later if you like. I have a complete set of Bond novels, so it's easy for me to scan the covers. It might take me a little while to get to them. Re: crediting Fleming

Since the article clearly establishes that Ian Fleming originated the character and the novel that inspired Spy Who Loved Me you can probably get away without mentioning him in the film infobox, although Fleming does receive screen credit for his novel so someone else might add it later. How I handled it with the novel infobox was to put "suggested by the novel by Ian Fleming" which is also the way the credit reads on "Casino Royale". Glidrose

I'm afraid I can't help you with the date there. I wasn't even aware Ian Fleming Publications and Glidrose were one and the same until fairly recently. I would have to guess it was VERY recent, perhaps even post-dating Die Another Day. The first reference I saw to the name was when they announced their plans to reprint Fleming's Bond novels in 2002-2003. P.S. Spacing around infobox

I just noticed that there seems to be no space to the left of the film infoboxes that have been put up so far; text such as the "edit" links seems to run right into them. I don't know how to fix it otherwise I'd jump in there. There should be at least a couple of picas (one letter width) between the box and the text, I think. Good work on the infoboxes. I was looking at the entries and I think they need a little different organization, since they are basically (for the most part) two articles combined - one for the novel and one for the movie, at least where the titles are the same. I'm going to make overall headers for The Novel and The Movie and then use subheaders for Plot summary and comic book adaptations, etc. - everything related to the novels; then The Film followed by Plot summary, soundtrack, etc. See what you think. PS I noticed the soundtrack image for For Your Eyes Only isn't showing up. When I rejigged the page I tried to get it to appear without success. New book articles

Just FYI I've added several new articles for the John Gardner novels (I'm up to Scorpius). I haven't had time to write plot summaries for all of them, so some are stubs (feel free to expand them if you want). I also created a new article James Bond uncollected short stories to cover the Raymond Benson short stories that most British readers I just realized have never seen. Someone jumped ahead and created an article for Benson's Zero Minus Ten so I added the infobox to that article as well. What am I gonna do when I run out of Bond books to write about! ;-) Cheers! Official vs. Unofficial Bond books

I spotted the bit of reorganization you did in the book novels section of the main article. Good work, though I don't know about putting Pearson's book down by the unofficial books. Although as I mention it's considered apocryphal, I just discovered (as I was finishing up the last of the article templates for the Gardner and Benson novels - whew!) that Benson actually treated elements of the book as canon. I'm at least a year away from starting to read Benson's stories *(I'm just past the halfway point with Gardner's books), so I won't know to what extent until I get caught up. 23skidoo 19:47, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Glidrose transition date

FYI, when I was inputting the Benson novels I found that the changeover from Glidrose to Ian Fleming Publications occurred with the 1999 Bond novel High Time to Kill which gave the copyright as Ian Fleming (Glidrose) Publications Ltd. I recall you were asking about this. So The Facts of Death in 1998 was, therefore, the last novel released under the old Glidrose name, though I have no idea whether the "Midsummer Night's Doom" short story that came between the two books belonged to one over the other. I'll have to dig out that Playboy to see for certain. I may be the only person on my block who can honestly say that he bought an issue (actually two issues counting the earlier story) of Playboy for the articles! 23skidoo 04:09, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Good work on the villains pages. I did a little revision on the Stromberg page but I probably won't have much time to work on any others until after my Christmas vacation. I'll give the SPECTRE/Blofeld pages a look a little later on today after work. I agree there is some confusion regarding when SPECTRE as an entity actually appears in the films. The problem in the movies is that McClory was a bit of a spoiler when it came to the use of SPECTRE (Stromberg in Spy Who Loved Me was originally going to be Blofeld), and I think after Thunderball, EON was leery about using the name so IIRC SPECTRE is never mentioned by name in You Only Live Twice - maybe I'm wrong but I don't remember hearing it. And in OHMSS we hear Bond name-drop SPECTRE once but it's never used in connection with Blofeld's mountain, nor does it get mentioned in Diamonds Are Forever. According to the books, SPECTRE ended after the events of Thunderball and Blofeld worked on his own thereafter and the organization didn't come back till the Gardner books. Property of a Lady article

I just realized the article for The Property of a Lady is pretty much a duplicate of what I already wrote about the story in the Octopussy and the Living Daylights article. It isn't really about the unmade film, evidence of which is fairly sketchy. I wonder if I shouldn't just make it a redirect to the book article where I give a synopsis of the story and maybe add a reference to the movie. Similarly it probably should join The Green Jade Mahjong and be banished from the James Bond Movies template. Thoughts? BTW for some reason your Talk page isn't showing up properly tonight: I actually had to use my Internet history to be able to add this message. SilverFin cover art

I'm on holidays this week so am just parachuting into Wikipedia once in awhile on another computer, but I can't download stuff or upload properly. I just found out that the U.S. cover art for SilverFin has just been released via Amazon and can be seen at http://www.commanderbond.net/Public/Stories/2619-1.shtml . I understand from reading the Wikipedia copyright pages that it's OK to use Amazon images under the fair use rules. Thunderball nomination

Sounds good. I think the main Bond article is also deserving of something similar, too. (The main Star Trek article has also been so nominated). But the timing for Thunderball makes sense. I won't be able to do too much on it before I return home from holidays since my archives are there but I'll see what I can do. Incidentally, how do you nominate an article? Nutty edits

Ouch! I was on vacation for a couple weeks so could only dip my toe in occasionally. But I just had to do a repair job on Colonel Sun. I don't envy you having to go in there and fix a bunch of that anonymous guy's edits. Colonel Sun was rendered almost unreadable! 23skidoo 21:47, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Follow-up I have all the novel articles I created on my watchlist, but it looks like this fellow is concentrating on the better known books by Fleming rather than Gardner. I don't get some of the edits, which resulted in bad punctuation and bad grammar. I also noticed someone insisted on changing all references to "worldwide" (in the comic strip sub-sections) to the incorrect "world-wide". I was going to fix them all but someone changed the wording to "around the world" which is fair enough. Re: template. I'm not sure how workable a template would be for something like Bond villains. Maybe if I saw an example I'd have a better picture. In other news, I'm just past the halfway point of the Gardner books, having read Brokenclaw over the holidays. So far they've been pretty good, though not as dark in tone as Fleming's books. What name does Benson use for the Splinter Cell book? Brosnan rumor

Just FYI I decided to add a reference to the latest Brosnan rumor to James Bond 21 because it's starting to get reported on sites like Commander Bond.net and Dark Horizons, and the James Bond International Fan Club newsletter also mentioned it. It'll probably turn up in the regular media soon. I think we'll see an announcement within a month or two because they need to get things rolling for a 2006 release. In other news, is it just me or do we have someone out there who is comma-happy? I just had to fix a bunch in the Living Daylights article. Goldfinger image

Over Christmas I got ahold of a cool first edition Pan paperback of Goldfinger, so I went to change the book image on the Goldfinger page to this new one, but it's still showing the blue-green car cover. Are you still seeing the blue-green version next to Plot Summary, or is it the gold cover with the woman on it? As far as reorganizing the James Bond page, I have no objections. Followup - I'm seeing the gold/girl cover now. Maybe the cache just needed refreshing (I closed by browser and reloaded the page and it worked OK). You're right I was probably overdoing it with both notations, but I got a bit paranoid with all the copyright warnings so I thought I'd take no chances! Kingsley Amis

Although I can't recall the exact sources, I've seen the Golden Gun information mentioned in one of the Kingsley Amis biographies, as well as one of the books on Fleming. I believe "The Bond Files" and Ray Benson's Bond Bedside Companion (or whatever it's called) also states this. Exactly how much Amis had to do with Golden Gun is a matter of debate, but I've seen too many mentions that he had something to do with finishing the book for publication to dismiss it as a rumor. 23skidoo 06:15, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

World-wide vs worldwide

This is gonna be one of those days. Some anonymous user is working his way through the book articles, changing "worldwide" to "world-wide" which is incorrect according to every single dictionary I own. What is it about Bond that seems to attract people who don't know how to spell, use commas, etc.? You Asked for It

Cool! If you have a good scan of that book, by all means add it. I think it would be interesting for people to see, plus in a non-Wikipedia forum I had someone doubting such a book existed. I don't think having 3 covers (two of which count as being rare and unusual) is too much. If you can find a copy of the Too Hot to Handle edition of Moonraker, feel free to add it there, too! I had planned to write a more detailed synopsis of the Casino Royale movie, by the way, but Wikipedia has been unstable of late and I lost what I was writing. Fictional countries

The fictional country in LTK is Isthmus, obviously meant to be a reference to Panama. I can't remember the name of the country in GoldenEye, but it's where Bond and the Russian gal end up with the big radio telescope dish. It was filmed at Aricebo in Puerto Rico but some fictional name is used in the movie. 23skidoo 22:05, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Follow-up. Weird. I saw GE not long ago and could have sworn they mentioned a non-existent country, even with the cigar crack by Wade. Unfortunately it's one of the Bonds I don't yet have on DVD. Gardner's novelization does indeed mention Cuba, so it must be a case of the memory cheating. Feel free to make the correction in the LALD article if you haven't already done so. Film distribution

All the Bonds from Dr. No to I believe Moonraker were distributed by UA, but the MGM bought UA so all the 1980s Bonds carried the MGM/UA logo. The Brosnans are all MGM, and MGM of course distributes all the earlier Bonds now, too. So for current information, listing MGM is correct (including for both versions of Casino Royale). But if you want to list the original distributor, it's UA, then MGM/UA and finally MGM, but you'll need to check with IMDb or a movie reference book to confirm which is which. 23skidoo 02:21, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Chapter Five

OK you have me curious. I know what the original title for chapter 5 of LALD was (I have the British paperback) but what was it renamed to for the US editions? Book template

The template looks good to me, and probably creates a better divider between the book and movie sections where applicable. I was going to suggest including comic strip adaptations as well, however I don't think that's workable since some adaptations have additional information provided (see Thunderball), while none of the Gardner/Benson novels have been adapted. Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Game infoboxes

I have to admit I'm a bit curious as to why you're running around behind me removing the "media" line from the infoboxes I have added to games. I didn't invent the line, it was in the template I copied & pasted from another game, and I think it provides valuable information, especially in the case of PC releases which can be on DVD or CD (or both).

Also curious why you are changing 230px to 185px for the size of the cover as it isn't actually changing the size of the displayed image.

Regarding the TC:RS copy&pastes, I forgot about the move option. Sorry. --Tubedogg 06:53, Dec 29, 2004 (UTC)

The only consensus I can gather from the Wikiproject is that there is no consensus. The template listed on the main page at infobox seems to be the one I am using, and I can't see that it is specified for any particular platform; in fact it specfically mentions suggestions for adapting it from its' displayed state (as a PC infobox) to consoles, and it doesn't mention media as one of the things to remove.

I'm not trying to attack you, I just happen to find the media line worth keeping in. It's not worth including a whole sentence about the media, but for someone not familiar with a particular system, IMO it's worth having it listed what the game comes on. Media can vary between games, especially on e.g. PS2 where it can be on CD or DVD. Theoretically Xbox games could come on CD, the player is capable of it. I believe GC discs can vary in size (could be wrong on that). At any rate, the specific spot I was a bit confused about was Shadow Ops: Red Mercury where the game has been released on both CD and DVD for PC. Unless we are going to start doing Shadow Ops: Red Mercury (PC) and Shadow Ops: Red Mercury (Xbox) there is no way to have an infobox for only one platform for this particular game (and other multi-platform games), so I think it should be included in the one that's there.

To sum: Dropping the media line simply because it's a multi-platform release doesn't make sense, especially when a large percentage of games today are multi-platform releases. --Tubedogg 07:40, Dec 29, 2004 (UTC)

Actor templates

While I had anticipated the problem with actors like Walter Gotell, I still think it is useful to have the templates on the rest of the pages, as people looking at the actors in a movie can jump from actor to actor easily. JOHN COLLISON (An Liúdramán) 11:11, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hmm. I still feel that if someone is looking up information on the different actors of a film (which people often do), the navbox makes it easier. They are also stackable (see Eunice Gayson). • Dear Wiki contributors, admins & sysops. You have been mislead by Curps. Please see that article in question and decide for yourselves if deletion is a correct Wiki thing to do. I have decided not to pursue the re-naming of Curps's article 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and through consultation with other helpful Wikis, I have decided to start a series of Asian Tsunami articles on my own ... there is freedom to initiate such a move right ? The articles in questions is proposed to drill deep in the subject in question. In Asian tsunami : The earthquake I have attempted to focus just on the earthquake that caused the Asian Tsunamis. In Asian tsunami : Time-line (currently vandalised by Curps), I have drilled down to the exact minutes to minutes account of the waves of deadly tsunamis. I will be added other article in the Asian tsunami series like the humanitarian aspects, current news & occurrences etc. because I think it is the right thing to do. kenkam 06:55, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
