A good question. I don't know the answer to that. Would 1989-90 NHL season link to 1989 NHL Entry Draft or to 1990 NHL Entry Draft? Kevin Rector 13:56, Sep 2, 2004 (UTC)

It's a matter of debate - the start of the article is where you are supposed to list the wheelings and dealings of the previous off-season (and the entry draft is technically the off-season), so it might make sense to put a link to the 1989 NHL Entry Draft from 1989-90 NHL season (plus, we do have opportunities to showcase some of the rookies). IMO, this position works for me. However, one can argue that since the 1989 draft occured closer to the end of the 1988-89 NHL season than the start of the 1989-90 one, you put a link to the latter. In the spirit of all that is wiki, why not both? kelvSYC 14:38, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)

A year since this was last talked about, I added links to the draft years to all the relevant pages. for the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, I added a link to the 1998-99 NHL season. Masterhatch 14:53, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

Highlights

I've been using a Highlights section in the Regular Season area for the seasons prior to the NHL. I recommend it for the NHL. Things like multi-goal games, streaks, etc. Alaney2k 16:54, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Setting some Parameters

Ok, I would like to (at the top of this page) setup a section of parameters for the sections of the page that are still considered "editable" (in terms of new information).

Primarily, this is the "Debuts of Note" and "Last Games of Note" sections. If we put guidelines at the top of this discussion page, it will be the rather "hard/soft" rules.

I would like to therefore get WP:CONSENSUS on the following guidelines:

'Debuts'

• players can be added at any time
• must have played FIRST game in NHL during the season in question; and
  • any player on final nomination list for "rookie of the year", or
  • top rookie scorer, or
  • top rookie goaltender (by SV% or GAA), or
  • any player who was the TOP draft pick in their year
  • any player who enters the HHOF after their career, or
  • any player who experiences some REALLY notable accomplishment during or after their career (ie: wins a Nobel Prize), or
  • likewise, any player who suffers some REALLY notable situation during or after their career (ie: dies while saving an entire village from a typhoon/buffoon)

'Last Games'

• players can be added at any time
• have announced retirement from NHL, and/or signed with another ELITE league (always reversable .. and therefore removable later)
• must have played their last NHL game during the season in question, and
  • have won any of the NHL player awards at some point in their career, or
  • have won a Stanley Cup, or
  • have played more than 10 seasons 500 games at the NHL level, or
  • garnered significant positive or negative press during their NHL career or post NHL career (yes, this is subjective), or
  • had their playing career ended by a truly unfortunate situation that prevented us from seeing their possible potential

I like the idea of set in stone guidelines as I have said in any of the above discussions. I am just not sure how we would implement them. Probably just on a layout page on the wikiproject like we have for other such guidelines. As far as the actual guidelines go I like the ones you have come up with. The only one I am unsure about is the 10 seasons one as a player could be a career minor leaguer and manage to make it up for a couple games each season for 10 years. It might be better to have an actual number of games played ie 500 games played. -Djsasso (talk) 15:18, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Some remarks:

1. I think the first overall draft pick (of any previous draft) should be suitable for the "debuts".
2. How do we define "top rookie goaltender"? I suggest the goalie with the highest SV% and the goalie with the lowest GAA; either with a minimum of 20 games. This may only be a single goalie some years, and two goalies other years.
3. I don't think any player who has won a Stanley Cup should be considered notable enough for the "last games". A mediocre player who sees little or no ice time in the playoffs can easily win a Stanley Cup on the right team.

Re the "top rookie goaltender": to clarify that one or two players can qualify under that criterion, I've changed the wording to the rookie goalie with the highest SV% or lowest GAA. —C.Fred (talk) 22:26, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

I like the list bmitchelf linked to. I think that covers just about everything. As for what Bamsefar75 asked regarding the Stanley Cup, I think that should follow the same crtieria as an All-Star Game: the player had to have won at least 2 Cups to make the lists without any of the other criteria. Well I will be damned...I have never seen that section there before. I will have to take a look at it. Personally I feel the more complicated the guidelines the less likely they are followed. But yup I like the list that bmitchelf linked to. That being said its mostly the same tho slightly different than whats listed above. If we could try and trim out the excess wording maybe that would be better. I still don't remember those ever being discussed, but I do vaguely remembering saying they had to win awards so that was probably the same conversation creating those ones. -Djsasso (talk) 20:36, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

I don't think the Stanley Cup should be considered in this context to make a player notable, especially because players may win it without even playing in the finals. I'm sure there are multiple winners from the teams that win the Cup in consecutive seasons, but that doesn't make them notable, as it is a team award, not individual. -- bmitchelf•T•F 20:55, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Fully agree with you on the stanley cup. I don't think it should be a measure as its possible to sneak a single stanley cup win in by only playing a select few games to meet the qualifications to have your name inscribed. -Djsasso (talk) 21:03, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Last Game amendments - Team Captains and All-Stars

I feel we should amend the Captain and All-Star qualifications to reflect the individual being named to the position as opposed to strictly how many times or how many years they served. Being named Captain or named to an All-Star team isn't a feat achieved by many, and it reflects on the quality of said individual's input towards the team. I feel the way it's currently phrased restricts those who served however briefly from being included. Rusted AutoParts 17:30, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Goals & Assists inclusion criteria

• Truth be told, we really should be applying era-specific guidelines. Playing in a thousand games these days is something many a journeyman manages; playing in a thousand games pre-expansion was an epic feat only seven Hall of Famers managed. Scoring 300 goals was HHOF-level for a pre-expansion player, a respectable career but no more for someone playing in the 80s and early 90s, and back to being a star in the post-lockout era. Stanley Cup winners in Last Games sections of NHL seasons

Stanley Cup winner should be in the players' last games in NHL season pages for certain players who earned that position. Maybe all the players who won the Stanley Cup since they haven't NHL season page format for last games, just those who qualified for it. Because if we don't list them, it would be difficult for readers for know without having to click on them to find out. BattleshipMan (talk) 04:41, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
