Just a question; the Rarity tab seems unnecessary to me. There hasn't been any information under it and recently, a bot added a warning banner for it. Not any other cat wiki pages have a similar heading that i could find, nor can I find any information to include under that heading. Would anyone mind if I deleted the heading entirely? --Also, since I added quite a few sources to the references section, I was wondering if the warning banner for adding citations at the bottom was completely necessary. Or if it is my right to take it down. Littlelibrary (talk) 19:26, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The article fails to mention that ruddy color of cats are, in actuality, a minority of the color of Somails. The majority of most Somalthe Ri cats are Blue in color. Also I have two somali cats and I can tell you that they are one of the highest maintenance cats I have had as far as hair goes.

It's worth mentioning that UK colours are Usual, Sorrel, Fawn, Blue, Silver, Sorrel Silver. Secondly, Somalis are classed as semi-longhair by GCCF. Thirdly, I agree with the article about maintenance, having had five. Richard Pinch 21:48, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

--Colouring "Somali may show full tabby stripes on portions of their bodies, but this is seen[by whom?] as a flaw" In fact the official CFA, CCA, Tica etc. standards, as set out in their breeds manual, specify that championship points will be taken off for any tabby markings on the body or legs. Only cats with just the "M" can get full marks on fur colour. So tabby markings are a flaw because they are against official breed standards.

The first and ONLY acceptable Show standard colour for a long time was Ruddy (or Usual). Eventually masked Ruddies, or Red (Sorrell) became accepted as a Standards colour. Blue and Fawn are dilutes of Red and Ruddy and are still only accepted by a few Cat associations, and, since Silver is only possible due to outcrossing to Siamese or Devon Rex, many associations will NEVER accept a Silver Somali as being purebred or acceptable for Showing. The family tree of all Somalis does in fact show several ancestral branches coming in from Siamese, also seen in earlier Abbyssinian trees. Origin - I believe Somali cats actually originated in Canada. I do agree with the dental problems, however. One of my Somali cats had all his teeth removed and his sister had most of her teeth extracted. They were born in 1992.--Cosmicship (talk) 21:40, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ancestory?[edit]

I have this cat encyclopedia and I was wonderng whether in this article there should be something about how the Somali was actually "created". Like who first entered one in a show. I know this info from the book I have so I can type it up (not copying exactly, of course, because that would be copyvio). Melon247 (talk) 18:28, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

African cats?? ARE Aby (and Somali) really come from Africa, from the countries hinted, or its just a label put on them? As far as I know, they have african ancestry; they were created somewhere else. Anyway, if not proven these breeds started out of Africa, best to take the mention away./StefanZ, Sweden90.231.255.39 (talk) 12:20, 18 January 2021 (UTC)/StefanZ[reply]

broken links[edit]

I removed the two broken links and the outdated one. Risssa (talk) 04:02, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedia entry v. show standards[edit]

This should be an encyclopedia entry with general information about Somalis -- not a place to list or debate all the acceptable show standards and colors. I have added a link to the Cat Fanciers Association breed profile page for "Somali" and one to the International Cat Association. Risssa (talk) 04:03, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
