Yaasiin Jaamac Nuux[edit]

Hoax. Claims Nuux was elected president of Somaliland in 2002, flatly contradicting Dahir Riyale Kahin. Googling for Nuux turns up forum rants. JRM 12:34, 2004 Nov 8 (UTC)

Addendum: well, we've cleared everything up. Yaasiin Jaamac Nuux is a real person, he or she apparently prepared a communique about the president of Somaliland (Kahin, indeed) visiting England, and we have no encyclopedic information on him or her, or any indication of notability. My best guess: an embassy aide or translator of some sort. So, once more with feeling: VfD. JRM 17:47, 2004 Nov 10 (UTC)
  • Abstain for now. What an intriguing looking language! I found a number of long texts that contain that string, all in Somali, and unfortunately my Somali is extremely limited. The name turns up often enough that I suspect it isn't a "hoax." The existence of two rival claimants to the presidency of Somaliland doesn't strike me as implausible. Even if he's a pretender, he seems notable. This may be a job for accuracy disputes rather than VfD. Smerdis of Tlön 14:51, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Well, Eisnel agreed with me, but having searched some more, there do seem to be concerns over the political situation in Somaliland. We don't have a Somali Wiki, unfortunately... Just an empty main page started by some well-meaning soul. I'm turning the page into a fact dispute. This VfD entry is withdrawn. Please leave it on VfD for another day or so, as per the deletion policy. I'm going to shake up the community for anyone who knows anything on Somaliland. JRM 15:39, 2004 Nov 8 (UTC) No more of that, now. JRM 17:47, 2004 Nov 10 (UTC)

You may find a Somali translater in Manchester (UK). There are enough Somalis there so that some official handouts are printed in Somali as well as in several Asian languages. Anthony Appleyard 16:31, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

From Talk:Yaasiin Jaamac Nuux[edit]

This flatly contradicts the article at Dahir Riyale Kahin. Looks like a silly hoax. Googling for this article turns up very few hits (far fewer than for Kahin). Maybe some partisan garbage? JRM 12:26, 2004 Nov 8 (UTC)

I think you're right. The only English pages that have this guy's name appear to be forum rants that are signed by him, like this: [1] VfD time, methinks. Let people there decide. - Eisnel 12:31, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Concur. Setting up the axe. JRM 12:33, 2004 Nov 8 (UTC)
VfD has raised legitimate concerns over the political situation in Somaliland. This may be genuine, or it may need rewriting, or it may still be patent nonsense—for now, I've withdrawn the VfD entry. We need someone who knows something on Somaliland to resolve this, so I'm pulling out. I'll leave notices to alert the community to the problem. JRM 15:42, 2004 Nov 8 (UTC)
The post you linked to was prepared by Yaasiin Jaamac Nuux calling for Somaliland to be recognised with Kahin as president. Susvolans 17:32, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for not mentioning that I'm an idiot, though you would have had every right to. :-) I just took Eisnel on his word, but as it turns out, he made a mistake and I didn't double-check. Boo for me.
Alright, this article now really needs to be deleted. From what we've gathered, mr. Nuux is a real person, but is definitely not the president of Somaliland, and if he's notable, we so far have not turned up any usable information on him. Here's me hoping that the next anon won't post obscure things on Somaliland, because I sure as hell can't tell a hoax from the real thing. :-) JRM 17:42, 2004 Nov 10 (UTC)

(From Wikipedia:Reference desk - JRM 21:29, 2004 Nov 8 (UTC)) The president of Somaliland is Dahir Rayale Kahin. He is the recognized president by Britain, the EU and some of the members of Congress in America. He was elected in April, 2003. The election was monitored independently and declared to be fair (though very close) from what I understand. Skyler1534 19:38, Nov 8, 2004 (UTC)

So far, the balance of evidence is swinging in the "hoax" direction again. I'm not going to put it right back on VfD, though; I think I and the article need some time to cool off, and we need to give people a chance of finally killing this thing off with confidence. JRM 21:29, 2004 Nov 8 (UTC)
