Name[edit]

This article should be title Katahdin (Mountain) not Mount Katahdin. Since Katahdin means "Greatest Mountain" the article currently says "Mountain Greatest Mountain" Steene01 (talk) 20:36, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notorious????[edit]

"notorious Knife Edge ridgeline" - what's that all about? Needs explanation, otherwise I will take out the 'notorious' next time I am here. Cross Reference (talk) 22:56, 8 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Knife Edge trail itself is relatively easy to traverse, no technical skill required. However, in some places it narrows to 3-4 in width, with sheer drops of several hundred feet on both sides. Hence "the knife's edge". It often takes hikers unaware because the the rest of the trails are beginner-intermediate. 172.101.11.12 (talk) 12:32, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Google hits for "katahdin" -"mount katahdin" -"mt katahdin": 1,600,000 search, 17,500 news.

Google hits for "mount katahdin" OR "mt katahdin": 390,000 search, 5,250 news.

Hits for books and scholar are roughly equal; however, I suspect these are inflated by extracts from USGS naming lists. Google Books contains a tremendous amount of official government documents, as I've learned while working on other articles.

Evidence that the mountain is the primary topic for the name Katahdin:

Pageviews - the mountain averages almost 4x as many pageviews as all the other articles linked from the dab page combined.

Google searches by topic - the mountain averages more than 5x as many searches as the second-place item (the sheep), and more than 3x as many searches as all four other topics combined.

Weak Support. Many features are commonly referred to without their descriptor even though it is part of their name, so I think the argument above is frankly garbage. However, the name itself, “Katahdin”, translates as “Greatest Mountain” (so the article claims), which would mean it translates as “Mount Greatest Mountain”. That is enough (albeit rather weak) to argue to move the article. I don’t really think it’s necessary though, since the official name includes “Mount”. Support first move (moving the DAB page) but oppose moving Mount Katahdin to Katahdin. The mountain is the primary topic (and the base name should redirect) but I'm not convinced about the common name argument. Not all Google hits for Katahdin relate to the mountain -- many Maine businesses and groups use the name as well. Articles like [1] [2] [3] are among the first that come up when you search Google News for "Katahdin" none of which relate to the mountain itself. As to Famartin's argument, plenty of place names are similarly redundant, so I don't see why this one should be singled out for a move. Calidum 13:57, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
