Template:Tilde[edit]

Moved to User:Alphax/Awards

WikiThanks to you for fixing Template:Tilde! I have a soft spot for one of my earliest contribs. You have just about made it perfect. — Xiongtalk* 03:05, 2005 May 1 (UTC)

No problem :) I've developed a (partial) solution to the "problem" of where to reply to comments - subpage threads. See User_talk:Alphax/Threads for more. Alphax τεχ 05:36, 1 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sync Talk[edit]

I dunno; I'm a pretty smart guy with plenty of background in just this sort of thing, and I don't quite follow it. Good luck getting the average thumb-fingered editor to follow that.

Let me work on the idea, though; you might have something.

Only one trouble: brace yourself for attack by the anti-transclusionists. — Xiongtalk* 10:39, 2005 May 1 (UTC)

The difference between thread subpages and, say, signature templates (which I can see the server loading effect of, used to have and am now on a crusade to rid Wikipedia of) is to that a thread will be transcluded on two, maybe three pages; a signature will be transcluded on two or three hundred pages. I got mine on about 100; that was after using one for 1 month. Anyway, many Wikipedia namespace pages do OK by it; for example, VFD has daily subpages, and every VFD has it's own subpage (from VFD, not the daily one). Closing statement: Pidgeot has indicated a desire to use thread subpages (evidenced by being the first person apart from myself to start a thread on my Talk page). If needs be, the threads can always be substituted once they are closed, and the original subpages speedy deleted as being in the User (well, User talk) namespace. Alphax τεχ 10:52, 1 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear me, no need to preach to the choir. I am strongly biased in favor of transclusion; it's a bit of a challenge for me even to credit the existence of the other side. You will not believe what I have suffered over the last month due to my defense of transclusion.

Let me work on the puzzle. — Xiongtalk* 11:32, 2005 May 1 (UTC)

Blanking[edit]

Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:SparqMan#Blanking_of_Template:idw-uo I am sure that I did not do this. I've changed my user password in case it was an instance of account theft. Sorry for the inconvenience. --SparqMan 04:13, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

{{idw-pui}} (reply →)[edit]

Hi Burgundavia, I noticed you've changed Template:Idw-pui to have a very light background, and to include the full image name (with namespace) as parameter. While these are possibly good things (and I can see the benefit of the parameter change), {{idw-pui}} is now out-of-synch with {{idw-uo}} and {{idw-cp}}. Should the other two be changed, or this one changed back? Please reply to this section. Thanks, Alphax τεχ 08:08, 11 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I would change the other two to the same style. I changed them to make them less garish, as they already stick out, and to make copying easier, as I generally do lots of images at once, and thus copy the image file name to several places, including there and list for addition to the PUI page. Wikifun Round 8[edit]

Congratulations, Alphax! Round 8 has finished, and you're in the lead. Unfortunately, you are not the only one: there is a three-way tie. You may accept this joint victory, but you're entitled to a tie-break question if you want to have one. Please respond at Wikipedia talk:Wikifun. Eugene van der Pijll 17:19, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Have you heard anything back regarding this? Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 05:01, May 16, 2005 (UTC)

No, I haven't sent the letter because I don't know where to find it. Alphax τεχ 09:26, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, ok, I am going to go to Phase II with this. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 09:32, May 16, 2005 (UTC)
Found it - Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission. Who should it be sent to? There are two possibilities - images at noao dot edu - or - outreach at noao dot edu - which would be better, and how should the letter be worded? Alphax τεχ 15:31, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Just ask them to release it under the cc-by-sa 2.0. That is simple, easy to understand license, that is clearly free. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 09:19, May 30, 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't see this until today - I've sent the letter (a modified version of Neutrality's semi-formal image request) asking them to release it under GFDL or cc-by-sa-2.5 (yes, there is a new version!). Alphax τεχ 18:03, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yes, that means commercial. I suspect the answer is going to be no. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 19:36, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for all the work on these. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 18:10, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)
As I suspected, the answer was no. Or rather "Since under your GNU Free Documentation License images can be reproduced for commercial purposes and may be modified - we decline your offer to include our NOAO images in the Wikipedia at this time. Thank you." Deletion time then. Alphax τεχ 16:50, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for tracking this down. Image is (unhappily) gone. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 23:19, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

Your conspiracy theory[edit]

Maybe this could be a new game on Wikipedia - "generate a conspiracy theory linking these articles"? Alphax τεχ 09:29, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A long time ago I attended an introduction to criminology lecture (at which I was just about the only non cop-wannabe). The professor showed a basket of goods bought at a hardward store. He set an exercise for the class: figure out what the suspect who had bought this stuff was going to do with it. There was a small knife, some duct-tape, some weedkiller, some chain, some wood and nails. Answers produced by the class were generally elaborate tales of kidnap, extortion, and murder. The professor then revealed that this had been his shopping basket: that the chain was for a child's swing, the duct-tape to fix a duct, the weedkiller to kill some weeds, etc. There wasn't a relationship between them, and no criminal intent. His point was that you can always spin a story that connects unrelated facts, and the more unrelated they are the more entertaining the story will be. So I'm not sure it would be much of a wikigame - it's too easy. -- John Fader (talk | contribs) 10:09, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unfree images[edit]

As noted on the mailing list (here), you have uploaded some images which are currently under a non-free license. If they are not relicensed under the {{GFDL}}, {{cc-by-sa-2.0}} or similar (see WP:ICT), they will have to be deleted. Thanks, Alphax τεχ 05:52, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rundle Mall images (threaded)[edit]

Why are these images {{fairuse}}? Did you not take them, or is that to do with copyright issues over the sculptures? Alphax τεχ 09:47, 22 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Warning: Alphax is vandalizing[edit]

I just observed that user:Alphax has today vandalized the article Richard I of England, by removing much relevant information, attested by scholarly studies and contemporary sources. Alphax has chosen these to be vanalized apparently because of his anti-gay bias. Certain portions of these same have been also earlier under attack, as target of removals by other (or possibly the same) vandal. Therefore I write this warning, and I hope that Alphax is deterred from causing further damage, as Alphax presumably wants to further his own prejudices here. 62.78.104.183 21:37, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Signing on talk pages[edit]

Hello, I was just wondering which post specifically your note on my talk was referring to. I generally sign anything I put on a talk page. Thanks!  – Jrdioko (Talk) 21:50, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not a pain at all, just wondering where I'd messed up. Good job at posting those reminders, I know it gets annoying when people don't sign.  – Jrdioko (Talk) 20:06, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

WikiFun[edit]

It is now 15 days after the last WikiFun round. In the interest of continuing the game, I am willing to be a neutral party to assist in this three way tie. You may email me a list of WikiFun questions and answers, then I shall pick the best ones out of the three of you. Please elaborate the difficulty for each question. I will need at least 7 questions from you, but I won't stop you from sending me 20 of them or more. Thank you. -- AllyUnion (talk) 09:27, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Your cipher[edit]

Incidentally, I know the cipher - I made it, in fact, and then gave it to these idiots before I found out what was in it for me. Anyway, no, I am not giving you the cipher, but I am going to use it to post a farewell letter on my user page, so yes, you can decode it from there. I'm leaving Wikipedia for the simple reason that I'm not at all interested in editing and writing and have much better things to do (no offence). That's why there's gonna be a letter, and I'm going to write it in code for the patient few who have the time to decipher the whole thing. There's lots of information there about the vandals who planned to attack Wikipedia, but I'm not going to give all that away for a song, am I? ;) Good luck. Wellmann 22:00, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

about switching subst[edit]

Hi Aplhax,

You said on my talk page

Any particular reason you advocate against substiuting {{idw}} and others, as evidenced by these edits? Alphax τεχ 17:52, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ugh, sorry about that, I actually confused subst: with msg: (which I think is not needed anymore), but your message made me lookup what subst: does, and the people on irc made me realize that obviously I didnt know what I was doing. I have reverted my edits. Thanks for the heads-up --Spundun 21:33, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Template:Tl[edit]

Simply because I've never seen that one substituted, its talk page does not indicate that it should be, and it seems more intuitive to leave it templated. (All those HTML entities are confusing when editing a page.) — Dan | Talk 14:03, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

Blanking talk page[edit]

Thank you for your suggestion regarding my talk page. However, I don't feel that there is any need for me to create an archive for the old, finished discussions there. I prefer a a clean talk page. Also, all the finished conversations is still in the history archives, if anyone should be interested. -- Stereotek 12:55, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

About Image:Tourniquet_Band_Photo.gif[edit]

I asked the owner of Firestream.net on IRC about it when I uploaded the image, and he said it was alright, and since the images are for public consumption, I picked a license that I think he would agree with.

Anyways, I'm PMing him on the boards (he just quit IRC, d'oh) to see if he'll okay the images as under cc-by-sa-2.5. He should... :P

Whoops[edit]

Yeah. Um. I didn't know it'd do that. I hit edit on the title to put my four tildes thing, submitted, and only that post was there... dialup, so I couldn't fix it before you noticed.

Again, Sorry! :| I really didn't know it'd do that (and I couldn't find the "revert" button -_-)

Edit summary - reply[edit]

Alphax, reguarding that image, Solid (the Firestream.net owner) has now licensed *all* band photos under cc-by-sa-2.5. This solves the licensing issue, am I right?

Mind Benders[edit]

Hello! I've noticed your interest in Wikifun, and thought I might share this with you. I have recently taken over the responsibilities of Wikipedia:Mind Benders (shortcut: WP:MIND), and I just wanted to let you know that the pre-round, an artistic competition, is now open! Afterwards, we will hold "normal" competitions once a month- the normal rounds will each consist of ten or more fun, logical, brain-stimulating questions. For right now, though, you can check out the practice problems from old competitions. I'm looking forward to seeing you on our page and having some WikiFun!!! Thanks, Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 22:18, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

P.S. Check the village pump news for updates- I'll put an announcement up when round one opens.

Hi, I'm not diambiguating at the moment. I'm wikifying dates. I'm very fast at it, I do it in batches of 99, using linky, but the database is out of date, so some will already have been fixed. About 1/3 done. Then I may revert to dab. Rich Farmbrough 12:23, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Talk pages[edit]

Beggin' yer pardon, Alphax, but I've been here for two years, I'm on Wikipedia several hours a day, and I don't need to be reminded to sign my posts. While I admire your keenness, I would suggest that there are probably better ways to spend your time than messaging oldtimers about tildes. (How about helping out at VfD, for instance? Or maybe use your energy to help reduce the backlog of articles that need to be wikified?) There's lots to do here! Denni 2005 July 5 02:33 (UTC)

PBurka pointed out that an important omission from this proposal: a band could meet WP:MUSIC criterion #5 (sharing a member with a famous band) and still be speedily deletable by this criterion. I've added a sentence to the proposal to reflect this: it now reads An article about a musician or music group that does not assert having released at least one album, nor having had media coverage, nor having a member that is or was also part of a well-known music group. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to VFD instead. Please consider if you support this new wording, and change your vote if not. Yours, Radiant_>|< July 5, 2005 09:55 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you with the requests above. Those two proposals were the only two that had an important omission and required a quick fix while there were still relatively few voters. I'm sure there'll be plenty more discussion, but no more significant changes. I've extended the voting period by one day to ensure they get their proper time. Thank you for your consideration. CSD Proposal 3-B[edit]

You voted or commented on Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-B or Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-A. I have proposed a revised version, at Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3-C. This version is intended to address objections made by many of those oppsoed to 3-A or 3-B. The revised propsal revers explicitly and directly to the criteria at WP:MUSIC. If you have not already done so, please examine the revised proposal and vote on it also. Thank you.
