Untitled[edit]

This is "original research", but the last time I went the "back way" for Cookeville to Monterey (through Algood and up the mountain), the tracks were paved over one the road so I don't think that it is really possible at the current time for a train to go much past Cookeville, although the tracks have not actually been taken up (as far as I have seen) as they have between Monterey and Crossville. My understanding was that there was still an operational main-line track between Cookeville and Monterey (which runs south of Algood), but that the branch-line track further north which connected Algood to Monterey was no longern operational (but still owned by NERR). Is that the track you're referring to or are you referring to the actual main-line track? Kaldari 00:35, 11 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That may be it. But just where does the main line run? It must be far from both Interstate 40 and U.S. 70. And the tracks in Monterey don't look too good, either. Obviously I don't really know much about it and that is why I put what I thought on the talk page and have no intent of editing the article without further sources. After looking at some current maps, I actually think that you're right. I don't think there's any way to take a train to Monterey. I need to find some historical train maps though to sort out where the defunct NERR tracks lay. Kaldari 00:52, 11 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I was totally mixed up. Algood is on the main line, and, yes, the track from Algood to Monterey is unusable. I'll edit the article to be a bit more specific.

"The Nashville and Eastern Railroad operates 95 miles of main line and 15 miles of branch line in Davidson, Wilson, Smith, and Putnam counties in Middle Tennessee. The railroad’s principal connection is to CSX Transportation in Nashville. The line is located from Nashville eastward to Monterey, Tennessee. The railroad currently owns but does not operate 20 miles of track, including 15 miles of railroad from Monterey to Algood." -- Tennessee Rail System Plan

I always remember seeing L&N locomotives on this line (this would be after 1968, when the Tennessee Central ended). Is this not part of the L&N railroad, or does L&N merely operate on these tracks? Also, didn't another railroad used to run parallel with these tracks (i.e. within a few feet), at least through Wilson County? I was thinking that the old railroad (not the one that's still there) was what used to be the Tennesse Central. In Mount Juliet, I've heard of the road (Central Pike?) that runs next to the existing railroad referred to as "Old Railroad Bed." Thanks, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 06:36, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
