I know that Snr (or the elder) is probably more common than I to distinguish him from his son, but I've put him here because there are actually three Johann Strausses - III was the son of Eduard Strauss, and, while not a very well known figure, we might have an article on him one day. --Camembert

Johann Strauss the elder was half Jewish, as his father Johann Michael Strauss was a baptized Jew. This is documented in a register at St Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, where J. M. Strauss' marriage to Rosalia Buschin was recorded. This is why the register was falsified by the Reichssippenamt (Reich Office of Genealogy) in Berlin during the Nazi era as it would have been impossible to suppress the very popular music of the Strauss family. --80.109.27.92 22:00, 24 October 2005 (UTC) (de:Benutzer:Wolfgang glock)[reply]

Johann Michael Strauss was not the father, but the grandfather of Johann Strauss. Hence Johann Strauss II was 1/8 Jewish. This was obviously too much for the Nazis, who did not falsify the register, but copied it, deleted the entry in the copy and locked away the original. That the Strauss family had Jewish roots is not a fantasy tale. It was common knowledge in early 19th-century Vienna. The inn of Franz Borgias Strauss (Johann I's father) in the Leopoldstadt was called "Judenwirtshaus" around 1800.--Suessmayr (talk) 12:40, 4 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Even if this seeming polemic is true, it would make Johann Strauss I 1/4th Jewish, and certainly not identifying. There is often a trend emerging dedicated to finding some sort of Jewish roots to composers supported by the Nazi Regime; much of it is fantasy tales.

It is not a "seeming polemic" or "fantasy tale", but a verified fact, and the original marriage record for Johann Michael Strauss (grandfather of Johann Strauss I) has been identified, as has the method used by the Nazis to suppress it in the archives.
