Untitled[edit]

Articles on departamental capitals can be given the name alone; no need to add "Capital". We only add "(city)" (or possibly the name of the country) to disambiguate between topics of the same name, such as for example Santiago.

The former departments in Peru are since 2002 (Law of regionalization) called "regions". Just to give you a hint! "Xauxa" from the Sweden wiki.

The changes you've made are wrong because "region" is a noun, and may I remind you that this is the English wiki, not the German one, so nouns are not capitalized. this is english wiki as you said, therefore it is pointless to say how it is upper-lower-cased in spanish.
in english it is quite common to uppercase things like XY County, XY River. It is made this way for lots of subnational entities. Tobias Conradi 15:25, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Just because it is "quite common" doesn't mean it's right. The word is just a noun and is not to be capitalized. Please revert your changes. After all the complaints about your earlier changes, one would suppose that you learned your lesson, but apparently you haven't. --Tuomas hello 15:36, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)
  • I learned my lesson? What can I have learned by the complaints about changing "XY oblast'" to "XY Province"? What by seeing that the russian oblasts are written "XY Oblast" like the polish "XY Voivodship" 's? What by complaints about changing "XY (province)" to "XY Province"? What by changing the central american parishes from "XY parish" and "XY Parish" to "XY Parish, Countryname" and during the process of uppercasing finding ambiguities that I solved with adding " ...,Countryname"? My lesson learned after seeing lots of different namings is to have unified naming.
  • people that did not complain and noticed the changes did not come here, I suppose. So looking at the complainers only is probably biased.
  • please make suggestion "what is right" as a guideline for all subnational entities. district and county are nouns as well.
  • "quite common" doesn't mean it's right. - I did not claim it to be right, that's why I called it quite common. Wikipedia also uses the policy to call things like it is common. Saying this, I know this is only one policy.
  • if we make all of these lower case -that's fine , but than please all where the english words county/district/province/region are not part of the local name

The word "region" is part of the local name, which is written with a lowercase R. You cannot make a standard for all countries, because as someone said earlier on this page, "internal consistency in accordance with the usages and customs of each country is more important than worldwide uniformity". only because someone said so, it should not be impossible to achieve wikipedia-wide consistency. Refer to regional costumes is not really easy because in most parts of the world the people do not speak english as national language. I would rather not like establish Peruvian english, Colombian english, belarus english, swedish english. But maybe a wikipedia wide solution is to lowercase it all. I know it's not easy to refer to regional costumes but still, it is necessary. We can't just invent new worldwide standards! Every country is different, and so are their place names. --Tuomas hello 01:11, Mar 9, 2005 (UTC)


I noticed in the Districts segment that "selva alta" is translated as "lower jungle" in English. Is this correct for this particular region? "Selva alta" translates literally as "high forest." Also, the pic template of the districts needs to be aligned so as not to run into surrounding text.Imperator331 (talk) 05:24, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
