On the site www.johnhartford.org you can see an example of this. Hartford was always willing to sign autographs, give banjo or fiddle tips, and hang out at his concerts. He was not above showing off a little as well, and often signed autographs this way. Don't know any "source though.

What would people feel about separating out the discography from the personal history? Right now it seems like a bit of a jumble, going back and forth. I think that separating the two could do a better job of setting off the importance of his discography, sepecially the seminal recordings on Iron Mountain Depot and Aereo-Plain. It'd be a pretty major edit, that would probably involve splitting the article into two sections, but i think there's a lot of room for expansion, given how important Hartford was to the bluegrass/country scene of the last 35 years. I'll probably make the edits in a week or so, unless anybody has objections. Robth 13 November 2005

I don't know what if anything this guy Atkins had to do with Harford becoming Hartford, but according to John's sister, Carolyn, who was a student of mine at the U of Wisconsin (PhD in Linguistics), John went with Hartford because the name kept spontaneously turning into Hartford and rather than correcting people (and official documents, etc., etc.) he just caved in to the inevitable.Alsihler (talk) 17:48, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

personal life?[edit]

Except for a little information on his childhood and his death, this article has practically no information on Hartford's personal life. Did he have any brothers or sisters, wives or girlfriends (or boyfriends), children, etc? Among "Associated acts" in the infobox is someone named Jamie Hartford: is that a brother, son, cousin, or is the same surname just a coincidence?--Jim10701 (talk) 04:53, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Partial insight into the man[edit]

I know this can't be placed in the article as it would be considered OR, but it provides a bit of insight to who John Hartford was. It was part of an interview I did with Al Harris.

Back in the early 70's Hartford performed a concert in our small town. A local songwriter, Al Harris, was the opening act for this concert. The concert was put on by Kirby Hamman who had played in a group with Harris prior to that time. Harris enjoyed much of the same music as Hartford which he included in his opening act. Two things Harris remembers from this event are as follows. The first: During Harris' performance of a Hank Snow tune, Harris happened to glance to off stage where Hartford was standing, eyes closed and singing along with Harris.

The second: After his set, Harris left the stage to great applause. As he passed Hartford, John told Harris, "Al, you've gotta go back out there. Those folks love you!" While this may be unprecedented, Hartford continued to encourage Harris to do an encore which he eventually did. Not something one might expect from a "headliner". What do we think about this source for more info on John?[edit]

Hi all,

this source does not necessarily appear academic, despite being published through some generic Academia site, but on first glance it seems to have to insightful and verifiable information on John. I think it could at least be used as a new coat of paint, to add some nice detail: /John_Hartford_as_I_knew_him-with-cover-page.pdf?

It's chock full of quotes that I'd like to hunt down first but they look good. I'll try and give the article a fuller read after work instead of during it later.

I'm a somewhat newfound John Hartford fan, first heard Aereo Plane last November or so and I've been hooked ever since. I think I'll be working on this article quite a bit in the future!

John Hartford's home on the Cumberland[edit]

John's home is still standing, complete with the steamboat lookout he had built. As of the date of this comment, a person might stay for a few days in the home he built, and take in the view of something that inspired him.
