I removed the Idaho msg, because only a small portion of the Basin and Range Province lies in Idaho. The probability that a reader would want to look for Boise (for example) is very low. – hike395 04:06, 24 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Overhaul

This article needs major reworking. Among the edits just made, I removed plagiarized material taken from the USGS article. Tmangray (talk) 01:18, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

One of the refs did say it was adapted from the USGS site, though, clearly, not much adapted. USGS material can be copied without attribution legally, though of course that is contrary to Wikipedia spirit. Cheers, and thanks for your improvements here. Geologyguy (talk) 01:58, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Volcanism section

I feel that the new volcanism section is unbalancing the article. I think that there certainly should be a volcanism section, but at the moment it's mainly a list of volcanic eruptions, concentrating on their estimated erupted volumes. I'm sure that there is a place for this material but I'm not convinced that this article is that place. Any other views on this? Mikenorton (talk) 18:00, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

I know. I'd like show in this section later on a map of the Basin and Range Province with the main volcanic fields on it. Then it is not so light anymore ;) I think this section a lil bit important with Socorro and Yellostone calderas showing life signs, though ;) --Chris.urs-o (talk) 09:45, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Category: Geologic provinces of the United States

Added Category:Geologic provinces of the United States as much of the Basin and Range Province is not in California; however the other states involved do not have "Category-Geologic provinces of state-name" - so using "Category-U.S." so readers can find the good article. Dutton's caterpillars

There is an interesting discussion here [1] regarding the supposed Dutton quote given in this article. While the source I link is a blog, and thus not itself RS, if it is correct, it should be possible to quote what Dutton actually said, directly from the source, rather than the mangled 'quotation' that seems to have since become accepted (assisted by Wikipedia, it would seem). Someone with access to Dutton's original (i.e. in an academic library) should be able to confirm it:

"The great belt of Cordilleras coming up through Mexico and crossing into United States territory is depicted as being composed of many short, abrupt ranges or ridges, looking upon the map like an army of caterpillars crawling northward. At length, about 150 miles north of the Mexican boundary, this army divides into two columns, one marching northwest, the other north-northeast The former branch becomes the system of mountain ridges spread over the southern and western portions of Arizona, the whole of Nevada and the western portion of Utah and extending into Oregon and Idaho."
