Sniggle[edit]

Currently much of the article is using a copy of Civil Disobedience from sniggle.net. Since we have the Civil Disobedience at Wikisource shouldn't we be referring to that instead of sending what looks like to me (and I'm guessing our silent IP friend) spammed traffic to that site? Or if not Wikisource at least something a little more neutral/reliable than one person's website? SQGibbon (talk) 22:06, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how things are supposed to work on Wikisource but we can create section headings for each paragraph which would then be linkable. I don't know if there's a way to do it that's unobtrusive or if that violates Wikisource guidelines though. But that's secondary to the bigger issue, is Sniggle.net a reliable source? I know little about it other than what I've gathered since noticing this issue but it appears to be a personal website and just on the basis of that alone would seem to preclude its use as a reliable source. I don't think the convenience of its linkable sections makes up for its status as a non-reliable source. SQGibbon (talk) 01:31, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have a copy of the original essay, there are many inconsistencies and contradictions in this Wikipedia article that need to be corrected. This cannot be done when the article is locked. Gandhi[edit]

Gandhi disputed that his idea of civil disobedience was influenced by the writings of Thoreau. In a letter to P.K. Rao, Servants of India Society, September 10, 1935, quoted in Louis Fischer's, The Life of Mahatma Gandhi, Part I, Chapter 11, pp. 87-88, he said "The statement that I had derived my idea of Civil Disobedience from the writings of Thoreau is wrong. The resistance to authority in South Africa was well advanced before I got the essay ... When I saw the title of Thoreau's great essay, I began to use his phrase to explain our struggle to the English readers. But I found that even "Civil Disobedience" failed to convey the full meaning of the struggle. I therefore adopted the phrase "Civil Resistance.""

Gandhi explicitly acknowledged the influence of Thoreau's writing on his work (for example, during his work in South Africa, he wrote that "[Thoreau's] example and writings are at present exactly applicable to the Indians in the Transvaal").
