Moving this to a narrative[edit]

As much as I like adding quotations to an article, this needs more meat between the quotations. For instance, his dedication from Mainz states he was three times a consul, but only the second is reported either directly (at List of Roman consuls), a suffect at AD 80 (AE 1948, 56); the first must have fallen between 62 & 80. This inscription indirectly reports he was consul a third time between 80 & 97. This indicates he was suffect consul three times, always a bridesmaid but never a bride. It would be interesting to find a discussion of the dynamics between achieving a suffect consulship & ordinary consulship, & whether being a suffect three times was not some kind of snub. -- llywrch (talk) 20:47, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
