Racist[edit]

There are news articles that quote the transcript of paul's show where he says something like "...it's all very well giving a darky the secretary generals job" . I understand in NZ people probably don't care. But in other countries that reported this story some one calling a black person a "darky" is offensive. I find it funny that he looks up to America for all good it's done, but if he had called someone a "darky" over in the good old USA, it would have ended is career. If anyone wants to fix the grammar or make the sentence about this into poetry be my guest. He said it , it's racist, it deserves to be mentioned.

To suggest that in NZ people probably don't care about what would be regarded in other countries as an offensive comment reads like an offensive remark to me! As a NZ'er I object to the suggestion that we are racists. Paul Holmes is a very opinionated and very controverial person, not at all typical of New Zealanders.

"Cheeky darkie" transcript[edit]

I removed the whole 'cheeky darkie' transcript for two reasons: (a) it's probably not relevant; only the particular quote is; (b) such an extensive transcript may well breach copyright. Stombs 11:30, Nov 3, 2004 (UTC)

A link to the original transcript of some form would bhe ideal here. It's the most relevant moment in his career as far as controversies go and simply isnt elaborated on enough in this article. 203.97.97.188 (talk) 19:39, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Holmes Birth Date[edit]

The article indicates that Paul Holmes was born in 1961. If this is true it would mean that he started his broadcasting career in Christchurch at the age of 9! I suspect his birth date is more like 1951. -- 139.80.123.38 06:15, January 20, 2005 (UTC)

I agree. I was about to question that myself but can't find anything in Google. I recommend changing to 1951; whether it's right or wrong, it is "less wrong" than what appears now. Stombs 01:15, Apr 18, 2005 (UTC)
It may be even earlier, based on some anecdotes here. Stombs 12:20, May 4, 2005 (UTC)
He was born April 29, 1950, according to his abysmal 1999 biography. -- FP <talk><edits> 22:05, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
Why is it relevant that his father didn't like pomposity? Is that an implied comment that Paul is pompous? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.197.15.138 (talk) 03:31, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"those were our people today..."[edit]

Holmes catch-phrase "those were our people today, that's Holmes tonight" is not mentioned in the article. Perhaps it would be a good idea to say who invented it, when was it first used etc.

Politics[edit]

Some mention would be good that he is a supporter of National. This in some ways made his position on the Holmes show during the 2005 election untenable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bactoid (talkcontribs) 12:58, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Career[edit]

"Holmes began his career on radio in Christchurch in the 1970s." I have recollections of assorted reports (at the time that the "Holmes" show first screened, and later on, within an article within Auckland's "Metro" (city) magazine) which claimed that he started his career with the then-existing radio station 4ZB, which was actually located in Dunedin. gharlandau@yahoo.com.au —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.238.136.45 (talk) 14:08, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Background[edit]

How encyclopaedic is the reference to his father as a "mechanic who had little time for the pompous"? Is that a euphemism for his being a communist, or intended as an oblique criticism of Paul Holmes' own alleged pomposity? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.197.15.138 (talk) 22:04, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Breathing difficulties[edit]

I'm still not completely familiar with Wikipedia policy, I just don't want to make any effort at this time to become so. Wikipedia says they are against censorship but their policy is so tight it can be somewhat regarded as that. Anyway, more about this article, it has been reported that Holmes had been suffering from breathing difficulties. I do know more details but I might leave it to someone else to go from here and detail this event and the associated events within it in the article. Anyone keen? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.234.214.63 (talk) 02:33, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cervical Cancer[edit]

The joke Paul Holmes made about cervical cancer being caused by promiscuity was in very bad taste. [1] There are numerous other examples of misinformation by this over rated and over paid broadcaster. 09:18, 5 December 2013 (UTC)09:18, 5 December 2013 (UTC)09:18, 5 December 2013 (UTC)09:18, 5 December 2013 (UTC)116.251.144.242 (talk)`
