Welcome!

Hello, Alai/Archive1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. I saw your comment at Talk:Shoggoth. I believe the nomination for deletion was not in good faith in the first place. Iconoclast, the user who originally listed the article, seemed to be trying to make some sarcastic point, as an article of his had recently been deleted. You can see some of the discussion at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/American Nihilist Underground Society. Joyous 19:07, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC)

Alai, when possible (I know we are short on time), I think it would be kind and wise to be nice to anons by avoiding wholesale reversions of large-scale edits if there is anything salvageable in them. Your friendly local Wikipedia ambassador wannabee, Tom H. 16:24, Jan 27, 2005 (UTC)

p.s. Check out the small language changes I made at the article to be more in harmony with the WP:NPOV article. Tom H. 16:28, Jan 27, 2005 (UTC)

You are very kind, Alai. Tom H. 18:08, Jan 27, 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Latter Day Saint movement[edit]

Alai, I appreciate your contributions to the Latter Day Saint Movement project - I hope you join the project to give a nice non-LDS view to the project members' contributions (I'm only guessing you are not LDS, but if you are, please correct me). You've raised some good questions that have been refreshing. -Visorstuff 20:54, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Incidentally, I hope you become a permanant member of the project Wikipedia:WikiProject_Latter_Day_Saint_movement#Participants. I feel you insight and neutrality to the POV is not only refreshing, but crucial to the future success of the project. -Visorstuff 19:12, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Again: thanks on the LDS project[edit]

I really appreciate your work on these articles. Several of us had hoped to get non-Mormon input on these issues. For your continuing interest, I think you're a uniquely valuable editor to LDS-related articles.

Incidentally, if no one else volunteers to nominate you, I'd be willing to nominate you on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship when you've had about 3 months on the project (early next month, I suppose). I'm impressed by your work and imagine others will be as well. If you're willing, of course. Cool Hand Luke 03:27, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Comment on structure for Leadership callings[edit]

Hi - I have set up a sample article on Bishops with a little bit of different format and was wondering if I could get some early feedback as to direction. Thx - Jim Trödel|talk 16:18, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Slann (Warhammer 40,000)[edit]

It was probably an objectively good delete, but I was a bit puzzled at the sudden disappearance of 'Slann (Warhammer 40,000)'. I only noticed it when doing a watchlist-list (as it were), then spent ages trying to find out where it went. Wouldn't it have been more policy-compliant and more "least surprising result" to have listed it for on votes for deletion? (Might have helped straighten out which of the two is the correct spelling, which I'm still lost on...) Alai 22:28, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Looking at it now it seems to me that I should have used vfd - sorry about that. Reading Lizardman (Warhammer) it also seems that both slaan and slann exist, but are slightly different races. Thue | talk 12:16, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Sorry;; but I don't have times to make English wikipedia, Anyway, I must make Korean wikipedia. I have to make many threads in seeing my pages. -galadrien / from 222.236.109.31

Creationism and other thresholds[edit]

I'm not clear to what threshold of edit-explaining you're suggesting operating, here. My reversion, explained in the edit summary, of a completely unexplained deletion, should also have been discussed on the talk page; whereas your reversion of that reversion, didn't need any explanation, beyond noting the lack of said talk-page comment...? Alai 05:12, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Wasn't clear to me one way on the other; hence I felt Ungtss's silent removal of it was suspicious, to say the least. Alai 06:16, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Wigdor[edit]

Certainly, though I am far from an expert (actually, I'm highly ignorant when it comes to surrealist and otherwise art – except for music, that is). It seems that much of the dispute was a product of an internal feud, and I am confident it can all be sorted by outside editors. Regards, El_C 07:14, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Well done[edit]

Hi, Alai. I want to congratulate you on a job well done at the Keith Wigdor article. You really did all the dirty, difficult work: it was less of a good cop - bad cop than absentee cop - cop. ;) Sorry I had to drop out, some pressing matters in and beyond WP. Surrealist toast ! Exactly, I was lucky, I managed to stay just up until it started to become unentertaining. Don't say that it may not be over: it's over, it's over! :D (I'll confess that I started the first sentence of the comment above with: I hope it isn't too early to congratulate you, but deleted it because I didn't want to jingse it – damn, I hope I didn't just jingse it!). All the best, El_C 05:45, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Courtesy answer[edit]

Thanks. I hope I can contribute to some pages but I won't be able to keep constant guard. First because the time it takes and secondly because it truly depress me to argue with irrational people like the creationist. Having said that I fully support your effort and that of the rest to keep the wikipedia as factual as possible, expecially regarding to the distincion of scientific methodology vs irational thinking (Which is very legit as long as it doesn't cross the line to rational thinking areas). --LexCorp 19:20, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hello[edit]

Appreciated your greet and offer of help... Regardless of how all this works out...on my word,I promise that these people are 1)internationally distributed;2)are honest and of good repute;3)are familar with Keith Wigdor's art;4)many at varying levels are commercial artists-this ranges from lowend to highend;and by lowend I primarily refer to some who are parttime commercial artists....Alai,in my honest opinion these are the very people who could provide you with critical estimations of his work... Further-I have never met Keith Wigdor in person my life...but I am actively in circles that know of his work... So honestly I'm quite confounded...It is only natural that I should be framing opinions based on my first experiences here...Is Wikipedia interested in preventing new intelligent artists from 1)joining;2)expressing their opinions?..are you some established enclave that rather than pursuing the objective development of this lexicon...is going to rather prefer staunching any influx of opinions to which they have not previously been exposed?...It is apparent that you guys opt only for your small circle...that is a shame...because the declaration of purpose seems noble...in practice you are doing the opposite...No new voters allowed? How do you propose to learn the first thing regarding what you are condemning? This is a writing site per se...Not a network of artisans...why not allow a network of artisans represent opinions regarding him?If you're not openminded to this then the issue ended before it began...how sadly stale for this site if it is a crossection of narrow cliques.. These people, and their numbers are more than you might guess...are exactly the opinions you professed wanting to sound out on his work...why the charade of this hearing...just announce that your group has become a closedminded olligarchy, impenetrable to all but a small enclave...and in that sense your internet work will by exopansion become relevant to no one... If you want to learn about the body of his work, allow people in who will have relevant things to say about it...If not, then just become a small community of silly ostriches with their heads buried in the sand... I hope you honestly meant that you wanted some objective inputs Alai.

Dear Alai, I need your advice[edit]

Dear Alai, would you please be so kind as to give me advice on how to start a Vote for Deletion for an article. First, I want to thank you for all your feedback, I am sorry for the past rude remarks towards you, (that was unnecessary of me) and I know that your main concern is maintaining the quality of Wikipedia and in the long run, that is a Win=Win for everyone. I do acknowledge that you are really sincere in your research and again I do thank you for even providing discussion where it is needed. Your concerns over notability are of a valid concern, since it is Wikipedia policy. That fact cannot be avoided. Alai, what do I do about starting a Vote for Deletion on articles that do fall under the category for Vote for Deletion. I would like to move on as well and avoid any problems in the future as well, but there are articles here on Wikipedia that really do not belong on here and I need your advice about starting a Vote for Deletion. Thank you.24.168.67.238 14:39, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No,your first assumption was right...my first long comment to you however led me to note people on your sheet having congratulated you,etc...to which I obviously had an averse reaction...Your long thought out comments to my talk sheet were read only after that...and they impress me...They impress me w/sincerity-which I very much appreciate it...and they offer insights that I believe genuinely give me some rounded insights of what is going on at this site...And I here offer you my thanks and appreciation for them...and I assert that in comments from henceforth I will bear them in mind...because I am certain they are far beyond(or rather completely beyond) anything you are required to do,and I appreciate them as such...I apologize if anything I have said in the heat of the edit arguments has given you any offense...I am just heading to edit sheet now, where I anticipate I'll find you pounding me with some laissez aux faire mortar shots..lol!Thanks again for your explications...gmonkai.

Is lining out a prior comment preferred technique(so that the evolution can be seen)?...How is this done,if I may ask?

Dear Alai, your advice on a technical issue[edit]

Alai, Again, Thank you for all your feedback and help! I decided to FOLLOW your Advice and Create a user account, which makes this a lot easier to digest. I am now officially logged in as user:Classicjupiter2 and I need to ask you a technical issue. You are a computer scientist and appear to be efficient in the Wikipedia use of edit articles. I need to know if I followed the correct steps in setting up the technical procedure for a VfD on the Wikipedia article for Portland Surrealist Group. Please help me and let me know what steps I missed.Classicjupiter2 21:07, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Ward Churchill article[edit]

Thank you for restoring the intro to Ward Churchill just now. [1] It seems that you get the essence of lead-writing very well, something which appears to escape certain other users. I look forward to working with you to keep that article from devolving back to that atrocious text of a few days ago. It was truly one of the worst things I've ever seen on Wikipedia. Anyway, I guess we have our hands full. -- Viajero 21:41, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

neophyte[edit]

Pardon my being such a neophyte Alai...I think that I would...but must first ask, what is Rfc?Review?

legwork[edit]

Okay, trying not to be too lazy, and doing some legwork. But also enjoying browsing,ie.-Hoce,LDS:yes biting off a bit there,lol!... RfC seems a link to discussion for dispute resolution.Seems a good idea.If he has many friends with animosity towards Wigdor cronies,he may indeed get the cards turned on me due to my being new.But based on my own reality and validity, and the ruse I'm pretty sure he's playing;sure,I'd like to RfC him.

RfC[edit]

I take it,that I enter,"Keith-Wigdor"on edit/RfC page...and then simply enter,"dodgy user name",and "possible sock puppet"...and is that it,Alai?Or should I add a link to the discussion sheet where he and I are having a dispute?

about the user, "Keith-Wigdor"[edit]

Alai, I just want to make sure you get this message. read below: Dear Alai, Yes, I would certainly need your help on this matter regarding this user, "Keith-Wigdor" on all the above concerns. Alai, please request a RfC and also misuse of user name and for being a sock-puppet. Thank you.Classicjupiter2 23:59, 4 Mar 2005Classicjupiter2 00:07, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

RfC[edit]

Reading all the Wikipedian advice, policies on RfC for usernames it was suggested to afford the individual an opportunity to change their username by adding this to their discussion page,so I have done so...noted that Gamaliel has also placed a warning for "Keith-Wigdor" to respond to allegations that he is an impostor. So I take it that you may be LDS?...Spent two years living in Salt Lake City a decade ago,I am not LDS I should note...The Wasatch surrounding Salt Lake remains one of my favorite places to hike on this planet...I have made the summit of Mt.Olympus(not the Greek),along the Northeast skyline there twice... A question Alai, can users see what one's individual edits have been if left unsigned?..as for example my adding to the "Melchizedek" classical listing(and not the as used in the Mormon Church)..."the contraction of the Hebraic words "Malachi"("Lord king")and "Tzadiq";with annunciations varying according to Akthanishtha and Sephardic variations"?I ask out of curiosity,as my motivation naturally was only in improving the body of the piece...Just trying to learn about how much we can see of one anothers additions here.gmonkai.

pardon me[edit]

I'll try and stop saturating your user page with quetions.Found that checking diff, allows seeing differences under contributions.Thanks.gmonkai.

puppets[edit]

Well,I don't want to carryon much with the surrealist matter...as it is a tired issue...but diff is an interesting tool...I come to agree that many "normal" users stepped in to vote DELETE...but two I find incredibly suspicious...namely:Keith_Wigdor,,and Cukestroke...You are familiar with my suspicions of the first;:and then there is cukestroke created 2-3-05 and much the same, but with the difference that his first act was basically to vandalize the original Wigdor article...I suspect user 24 initially gave offense to one longtime user who is behind both of these aliases.gmonkai.

thanks,and pardon spaces

Ward Churchill Talk Page[edit]

Hello Alai,

I will read those pages you sent me, I would like to become a good contributing member of wikipedia. Is it alright to have discussions on the talk page like that or are the talk pages strictly for making the article better?

Perhaps I got carried away on the Ward Churchill talk page, but the prospect of a new Mcarthyism arising and purging American Universities has really been bothering/scaring me lately.

The reason I had put those comments under the talk about art plagiarism is because the only reason the art plagiarism is an issue, and the only reason you and I have heard about it is because of the 9/11 essay. I guess theres old enemies of Ward, but Fox news is the one framing the issue and trying to get him removed.

Look, if Ward was being removed from his position for plagiarism he allegedly committed 20 years ago that would be one thing but that is not what is happening. Ward Churchill is being put through the wringer for thought crime, as far as I can see.

I only agree with Ward´s essay about 20%, but I will defend him against the thought police with all my might. I believe his tone and position is a real loser for the left and can never catch on. I believe the left needs a better story on terrorism and democracy.

Ward really needs a better PR person, if it were possible to get his side of the story out there. Someone to explain that the infamous essay was written on september 12th, which was a very emotional and scary time for everyone and people react to that differently. I see his thoughts misconstrued on Fox News regularly, and I do not believe its fair. --Wilbertoki 14:34, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Dear Alai, your advice on this matter of the impersonator[edit]

Alai, I need to ask you your advice on the impersonator, user, "Keith-Wigdor" who is abusing the Wikipedia service and commiting slander against the artist Keith Wigdor. This person is not only abusing the artist but Wikipedia as well, and their actions on this particular page is slander, here take a look, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:North_American_Man-Boy_Love_Association The impersonator has left a post on this page #15, besides other user contributions that are abuse. I already contacted Administrator, Gamaliel, and I need your advice on what to do if this person does not stop.Classicjupiter2 18:29, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Alai, another impersonator and more abuse==

This person will not stop abusing Wikipedia and Keith Wigdor. This is from the Discussion page on the Keith Wigdor article,

Save the article! This is all so unfair to Keith. I think that his article should not be deleted. Keith has always been my big brother, so I vote to keep this article intact. BTW, Keith, Terrence Lindall was looking for you.--Nancy-Wigdor 18:19, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thank Alai[edit]

I read my comment back and you are right that it was a general complaint about WC´s treatment.

You mentioned Sky broadcasting carries fox where you live, I assumed you were an American, I guess here in America we tend to assume everyone is American. Anyway I happened across this page that says Sky broadcasting is owned by Rupert Murdoch´s news corp that owns Fox News. Its good to know who owns what in todays world of media consolidation. It´s interesting that they can´t even find advertising sponsors and have to play it on their own network. --Wilbertoki 16:37, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing the LDSprojectbox[edit]

Thanks - I wouldn't have even noticed the problem until tomorrow. I also wanted to say thanks for all the edits and review you do on the LDS pages. I noticed someone replaced "the church" with "the Church" on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints page, but they made many other good edits so I have left them in - any thoughts? Trödel|talk 03:45, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I know that some feel that "The Church of..." has NPOV issues - however, I think that especially because of the similar names of the small groups that broke off it is very useful so that people know that it is the largest branch. I tried to get the article moved to "The Church ..." but it failed, and although split pretty evenly (58% in favor of the change) I figured why waste my time on that - I'll just propose that the linke be that way - of course you ended up doing more of them than I did - I still run across one every few weeks - which is weird since I checked every single google hit. Anyway - I think the compromise to name the article without the "The" and have the links be with the "The" is a good one. Let me know if you tackle "the Church" cross denomination naming convention and I will support the change to "the church". Trödel|talk 04:10, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Grammar[edit]

Some of the provisions of the Manual of Style are extremely controversial and are constantly under discussion and revision (see Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style and you'll know what I'm talking about). One of the most controversial issues is British English/American English–the de facto standard has become to leave the author's original style in the article. Warmest regards --Neutralitytalk 03:22, Mar 14, 2005 (UTC)

Good work[edit]

Hi, Alai, thanks for your note.

Yes, the MoS itself does say it's not policy. "Writers are not required to follow all or any of these rules: the joy of wiki editing is that perfection is not required."

It continues, though, in the next sentence: "Copy-editing wikipedians will refer to this manual, and pages will either gradually be made to conform with this guide or this guide will itself be changed."

It looks like you and I are doing that gradual conforming work. (Keep doing that good work.)

Wishing you all the best. -- Jonathan

thanks for the reminder[edit]

Alai, thanks for the pointer. Being Canadian I am always finding myself constantly going on about the Americanisation of the English language, so I found it quite amusing that I made such a mistake. regards, darrennie

Germany[edit]

Hello, Alai. Regarding the protection of the Germany page, I would like to say the following. Jiang can keep the page protected for as long as he wants - I shall stick to my version anyway. Despite being "a bit long", I believe that it's a very good article. I've put a lot of work into that page, and I don't see why it should be dumped for a new version which, to say the least, is not in any way better than the older one.

I have also noticed that a number of users do prefer my version; all those anonymous numbers who kept reverting the page are not in any way related to me, and you can check the IP addresses if you want. So it's futile to speak of a consensus; besides, a consensus can always change. That said, I would be ready to revert the page only once a day, if you and the others agree to let pass at least 3 hours before reverting the page back. If you don't respect the 3 hour limit, I'll revert once more. In this way, we would also be able to see which version is actually the more popular one. Sorry, but this is the only compromise that I can offer. -Heimdal 17:17, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I don't know whether it's due to a lack of jealousy on my part (I'm more gymnastic than that guy any day) or simply because I did not want to see that thing on my page (which is slightly more likely) but I'm indebted to you for flipping back my user talk page. I couldn't work out how to do it myself.

Thank you, too, for reverting the vandalism on my user talk. Samaritan 19:28, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
That was... so so weird. Again, thank you, and I'll keep my eyes open. Bobo192 19:55, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
thanks, was waiting for the kids to go to bed before I was going to get rid of the redirect Kglavin 00:07, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

And now for something..[edit]

..completely different, as I'm sure I plagiarized from someone.

The article you have on your to-do list of [[Dumbarton F. C.]] is already available at Dumbarton F.C.. Unless we make a decision to redirect all F. C.'s to F.C. at some point, I don't see this second article is necessary.

And, so as to put your mind at rest from last time, I don't make a great habit of using acronyms (c.f. omg - whatever that means) in computer text so often. My shame is great. Bobo192 04:43, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

This brings up an issue of redirection - as indicated in the next paragraph which I previously had not thought about. Ugh. Talk about not ending a sentence a preposition with.. anyway.
A task I was considering undertaking (though I haven't brought it up with Dryazan or anyone else as yet, is to redirect all [[Club FC]] teams to [[Club F.C.]] where necessary. I notice Arsenal F.C.'s already does this, but was wondering what you thought. Worth me bringing it up? Bobo192 05:04, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
As needed sounds like a good solution. The fact that one has been created (thanks to a user) nearly four weeks ago, is a good help. I'll run it past Dryazan now.
Bobo192 05:17, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
There are so many clubs out there. It's probably ok to do it for all top division clubs, as well as, if you see any bad links, such as with Dumbarton. But to do it for every of 100s of teams... Also, remember in other countries, the notation might have "F.C." showing up differently, for example French and Russian clubs both have it as "FC".
I definitely see no harm in "FC" redirects. --Dryazan 15:36, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Help new member with VfD discussion[edit]

Thanks for welcoming me, Alai. I actually thought I had created a user account before starting to post on wikipedia, but apparently I didn't. Anyhow, my first tentative foray into wikipedia editting has already run into some difficulties, and I would dearly love a little aide from an administrator. Check out my entry SHWI-ISOT and the discussion on the VfD about it. Any advise or comments? -- Glen Finney 03:50, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Just wanted to thank you for welcoming me to the wiki community and taking the time to respond. Thanks again. -- Glen Finney 18:10, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

RfP Policy[edit]

Alai, Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection "is not the place to discuss or dispute articles, users, or policies." Moreover, your inference that my motivations for requesting atheism's protection does not assume good faith. Your supposition is contentious and perhaps the intent is ad hominem too. Cardinal in names[edit]

Cardinal is included in the titles of cardinals for two practical reasons.

  • Many mediaeval cardinals have had their first names long forgotten in history and so they can only be entered as Cardinal X while people try to find the original first name.
  • Many mediaeval cardinals used different cardinalate names than their original birth names. Not including the word cardinal produces a name that never existed. But their own personal names are either universally not recognised or long forgotten.

The inclusion of cardinal is not meant to give cardinals any particular special treatment. It is simply the only way many historic cardinals can be entered on wikipedia. It was discussed and agreed that in the case of cardinals, the word's inclusion was a practical necessity. Ancient office-holders, where their personal name may not be as widely known and they are only known by title and surname, cause particular problems that don't arise with holders of more modern offices. Mediaeval cardinals will invariably be searched through google through 'cardinal x', just as popes will be searched for using 'pope x'. Other clergymen in other lower offices are either not remembered in history or are usually known by full name. But the higher one got in the Roman Catholic Church, the greater the likelihood that one's personal names were replaced by a clerical name, and it is just the latter that people remember.

This page belongs with all the other hundreds of cardinal articles under the format agreed and used all over wikipedia. Either the naming conventions are changed (which will mean we cannot put on some mediaval cardinals and will have inaccurate names for others) or this article needs to be moved to follow the agreed format. Abandoning that format would necessitate the renaming of hundreds of pages of articles and at this stage tens of thousands of links in articles. FearÉIREANN 23:43, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

re cardinals[edit]

Yup. I was just letting you know the logic behind it. It isn't special treatment, just a practical necessity. (I've spent a lot of time complaining about the overuse of titles on wikipedia but there are times where it is a practical necessity and cardinals are one such category. :-) FearÉIREANN 23:49, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

Just a quick thank you for helping with re-sorting the UK bio stubs. It's a huge number of stubs to look through for Scottish and Welsh places, so any help is much appreciated. Grutness|hello? 12:04, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)
