Separate Into Roanoke Island and Lost Colony Articles?

I think that Roanoke Island and the Lost Colony deserve their own separate articles, and I am really surprised that I am the first to suggest it. I suggest converting this article into the Lost Colony article and creating a new, more general Roanoke Island article that is not quite as dominated by the Lost Colony's history as is this one. Certainly, the Lost Colony is the most important part of the island's history by far, but there should more non-Lost Colony information about the island. Bjeversole 10:39, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Since there hasn't been any other commentary, I'd say go for it. I'd suggest Roanoke Colony as a more specific name than Lost Colony. Kmusser 19:11, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

I have split the articles as per above. I think there is not enough current information in the resulting one about Roanoke Island itself, and now, there is certainly more room for it. Vaoverland 07:24, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

The comment about Lee Miller's theory isn't correct.

Croatan Indians - Croatian

The story of Croatan Indians having European ancestors has been told many times. Its also been said that they could well be related to that county in Europe called Croatia. Croatan Indinas should have a page on the web where all information for /against can be viewed.

There was no "Tribe" known as Croatan, though there was a "village" by that name of the Tuscarora Nation in North Carolina at that time. The "tribe" of Croatan was fabricated by Hamilton McMillan in 1885, attempting to cover-up the fact that atleast some of the colonists had been taken in by Tuscarora. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Lumbee

I think that EVERYONE should read the paragraph with the heading of "Abandonment of Colony". Someone OBVIOUSLY had TOO much time on their hands. I would like to edit it, but I do not know EXACTLY what belongs there.

From the article: "White took this to mean that they had moved to Croatoan Island, but he was unable to conduct a search; a hurricane hit the Outer Banks and blew his fleet out to sea. By the time the storm abated, the fleet was closer to England than Virginia. The fleet, running low on provisions, returned to England."

While the notion of a hurricane blowing ships out to sea is not that impossible-sounding, the sentence "by the time the storm abated, the fleet was closer to England than Virginia" is. A hurricane would pass a place in 2 days at the absolute longest. How can a ship cross half the Atlantic or more (i.e. 3000 km or more) in two days? --Bowlhover 00:06, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

is why i thought i'd check this out.. an AMAZING little movie Lions Gate has a couple good ones too. Romans 2:12-15 we all know of GOOD and EVIL - can sense it and we all have brains... eyes.. and ears.. so maybe we should look farther.

Amadas and Barlowe

Shouldn't there be an article on Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe? If not Barlowe, at least Philip Amadas, considering we know slightly more about him than Barlowe. Or does this belong in (Project North Carolina)?206.211.66.20 20:51, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Excellent question. In North Carolina by the boundaries that appeared later, but definitely Virginia during the time of the Lost Colony when the whole area was known as Virginia. The name Virginia first appeared here in 1584. The name Carolina did not appear here until 1629.DLinth (talk) 22:35, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

ends abruptly?

Anyone else think this article ends abruptly? I'm sure there's a lot more to say about the Island after the Civil War. A good start would be talking about how the Freedman Colony eventually dissolved. What about present-day Manteo? Thanks. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 19:59, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Use of "Citation needed"

I have added citations to Lawson where the need was indicated - but am a little baffled as to why an editor would either reference the work in the body text (or see the plainly evident reference), but not actually give the reference a formal citation and use the "cn" tag instead. <rant>If the work is already referenced in the body text, how hard is it to look up the reference and cite it bibliographically? The full content and bibliographic info for the Lawson history in particular is (are) not at all difficult to find online (although there are several editions in print).</rant> Hipgnostic (talk) 19:57, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
