Joel Sax lives in Trabuco Canyon California with three cats and his wife, Lynn. Currently he moves in circles occupied by local writers. (See Writing in Orange) He has travelled in Europe, Mexico, and the United States. Since moving back to his native Southern California in 1999, Joel has spent many hours getting to know the species of the chaparral, the unique "elfin forest" of Coastal California.

He reports for LocalHikes.Com, specializing in Orange County trails. His weblog, Pax Nortona, infuriates some readers and endears him to others. His mixed bag of friends include ministers, housewives, small businesspeople, a Muslim woman who wears the veil, poets, teachers, journalists, a sci fi writer, park rangers, a fan of BDSM, psychiatric nurses, writers, painters, graphic designers, political activists, and lesbians. He is both agnostic and nonviolent. He was named an Honorary Lesbian by Dykewrite in March of this year.

Joel thinks of himself first as a human being and declines to state a profession. (See D.H. Lawrence's poem "What is He?" for the inspiration for Joel's stand on this matter.) He writes, reads, and photographs, but he has never made a chair.

He drives much less recklessly than this photo suggests:
