Requested move[edit]

As there are other Longfords perhapse this should be moved to Longford, County Longford. -- Philip Baird Shearer 17:44, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • I don't believe the move is necessary - this Longford is by far the best known and all the current links to Longford point to it.

This article has been renamed as the result of a move request. violet/riga (t) 10:05, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Disputed: Airliners?[edit]

I'm not entirley convinced that Longford's Abbyshrule airfield is capable of accepting any kind of airliner, let alone a heavy cargo plane (Antonov An-124) or the largest ever passenger airliner (Airbus A380), especially as the latter isn't even in service yet. This requires verification and, if it's entirely wrong, removal. I'm adding the appropriate tags. Mickthefish 19:14, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Sheep's clothing[edit]

Some unflattering photos by ZICO were removed as "vandalism in sheep's clothing" - which is fine. But unfortunately much of the text goes the other way and reads like a puff piece. Will someone try and remove the Tourist Board language from the article? (Sarah777 04:01, 26 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

I would fully agree that some of the photographs removed by 86.40.99.23 were a little "unflattering", but, perhaps unfortunately, they are factual images; the Market Square does look as it appears in the photograph. It should be noted that the article contains a fairly neutral balance of photographs (I would call the Abbeyshrule airport and the train station photographs fairly neutral, for examples). If the Market Square (or the tourist information office) changes in appearance, then, of course, the article should be updated with the relevant photographs.
Regarding the section on the "public convenience" of Longford town, there, again, is only factual information stated (although, the language could, perhaps, be tidied up a little). I would not call the image "unflattering" (I might call it 'unusual'). The toilet is, in truth, notable (for reasons stated in the section).
I think that Sarah777 is correct in saying that much of the text is not exactly up to encyclopaedia standards (I wouldn't generally think of Longford as "futuristic"). It really could be improved in places.
If anyone has views or arguments on this matter, feel free to state them. ZICO 20:45, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Longford Town Football Club[edit]

Updated the "Sport" section, it's been a few years since Longford Town were relegated from the Premier division, and the League of Ireland is no longer referred to as the Eircom League. Backbeatlistener (talk) 21:22, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Origins of the name 'Longford'[edit]

It appears that the name derives from 'Longford Uí Farrell' or 'Longphort Ui Fhearghail'; O'Farrell's fortress, see 1 & 2 - and not Longphort as currently stated. Thoughts? RashersTierney (talk) 04:08, 2 June 2012 (UTC) told ya Tierney, told ya 2 years ago, now your actin like you've figured this revelation out all on your own when originally you'd argued down to the ground that longford was a viking town. Its not Longford (Anglicisation) or Longphort (Viking enclosed ship dock)its Longfort which is a fortification, i TOLD YOU THIS ALREADY. It was also one of the only Gaelic market towns that arose in medieval times without the help of vikings or normans, you demean Longford with your talk of Longphorts. March 2019 - people[edit]

Some additions of people to Lonford town may perhaps be more appropriately placed elsewhere ... Francis Ysidro Edgeworth is a candidate for move to Edgeworthstown where he was born for example - his article makes no mention of Longford Town. Comments welcome. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 08:20, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed! Most of the people here are misplaced. I believe only Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, Willie Browne, Ray Flynn and Michael Gomez should actually be here. Others are variously duplicates with Granard, can be placed in other towns or are just from other parts of the county. Declangi (talk) 09:46, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a pass removing the Granard duplicates and moved one each to Ballymahon and Edgeworthstown. I'm incline to believe Francis "Frank" Butler and Padraic Colum probably don't rightly belong here but I haven't located a specific appropriate settlement. Djm-leighpark (talk) 19:15, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Colum seems good ... my it's my original research ... has plaque under a tree at the hospital 53°43′28″N 7°47′09″W / 53.724420°N 7.785922°W / 53.724420; -7.785922 and as far as I can tell consistent with this map but I'll leave it for others to check the findings as I don't know the area in detail. Djm-leighpark (talk) 19:42, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • As far as I can tell (from pressreader) the Irish Independent published on 25 April 2018 Butler was born in Longford Town. Two possible issues may be they could have been lazy and sourced that information from this article (I note only as a possible) ... and its possible the temporary pressreader page was incorrect. I do however note the people list has previously been pruned and some since restored. hmmm. Djm-leighpark (talk) 20:14, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this, a big improvement. Colum and Butler look fine to be under Longford. In general, the People sections of Ireland town articles are prone to vandalism and boosterism. It's one of those ongoing tasks to keep them clean! Declangi (talk) 23:27, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
