The Sahara, in northern Africa, is the world's second largest desert (second to Antarctica). Its name is an English pronunciation of the Arabic word for desert (صحراء Sound pronunciation). 2.5 million people live in the Sahara, most of these in Mauritania, Morocco and Algeria. The largest city is Nouakchott, Mauritania's capital.
