Nice job on the diagram for MacPherson strut. That was one of the requested pictures that I vaguely hand on my 'keep an eye out for' list, but I doubted I could take a picture that was much better than the previous one. The diagram approach is much better. -- Solipsist 12:12, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I also wanted to say that I liked the MacPherson strut diagram. Harald Hansen 20:31, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Free Republic/Jim Robinson
[edit]My apologies for merging and redirecting the Jim Robinson article without discussion, but I don't believe it is general policy to have articles on people who are notable only for their websites, when the article about hte website itself will suffice quite well. See e.g. The Best Page in the Universe.
In any case, it is quite easily to undo, as User:Wakeforest demonstrated so aptly. If you want to discuss it, I've brought it up on the Talk:Free Republic page. --Jonathan Christensen 08:28, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- No harm done. My apologies. Silly me, I should have read the Talk:Free Republic page before I commented. Or maybe I shouldn’t have been reading recent changes in the wee hours of the morning. -Casito 23:17, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hey, Sorry to bother you about this again, but might you mind clarifying your position (or lack thereof) on this on the Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Jim Robinson page? User:Rangerdude is claiming that you are in support of keeping them as two seperate articles based on your early comments on Talk:Jim Robinson.

What the hell's your problem? I never would joke about the Vietnam War. It was a great travesty and resulted in the loss of over 58,000 American soldiers. And no I didn't lose 82 family members but my dad was killed in the war. His name was Robert Stevens Samuels if you don't believe me and you can go and check it up. I would never joke about a thing like that esecially a war that took my father's life and I find it extremely insulting you would suggest so. And I apologize for putting the remarks I did earlier on Vietnam but I cannot help but feel a certain hatred for a country that resulted in my father's death. I have had thoughts of suicide (which is also no laughing matter), especially when I was 13 and first learned of my father's death. However I have been able to overcome that and now live a happy life with my wife and 2 kids. Again I apologize for the post I made earlier on Vietnam but I take deep offense to you suggesting I regard the Vietnam War as a joke. I realize from your bio that you are only 22 but I still don't think that is any excuse for jumping to a conclusion about a person and accusing them of taking lightly one of the most deplorable wars in our nation's history. I would hope you would be more considerate of the user's feelings in the future.(at 14:46, 21 Apr 2005 User:128.172.224.210 forgot to sign)
- Leaving this one up to make a point. I did look up "Robert Stevens Samuels." 5 men with the surname 'Samuels' died in Vietnam, but none of them had 'Robert,' 'Stevens,' or 'Steven' for a first or middle name. (see US deaths, Aus deaths, NZ deaths) This goes to show you how far some vandals will go. I can't imagine what this anon thinks he is trying to accomplish, so I am left to conclude that he draws pleasure from telling lies. -Casito⇝Talk 07:55, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Narc
[edit]Hi Casito. Please check the history of articles before tagging them for speedy deletion. The article Narc is a legitimate article that has been targeted by vandals. You tagged one of the vandalised versions. A good tip, I find, is to check the last version by an editor with a username. If that looks like rubbish, tag. If not, revert. speedy delete
[edit]Stop tagging articles for speedy delete. You don't know what you are doing. TWO MINUTES after my first edit on Massimo Pigliucci clearly labelled "step one" you marked it to be deleted. This is an important noteable person. (at 01:44, 4 May 2005 User:4.250.33.204 forgot to sign)

- Sign in. Most wikipedians are suspicious of anonymous users. If you had been logged in, I would have given you the benefit of the doubt. Do you have any idea how many junk articles are created by anons every hour?
- Even after you added material, your article Massimo Pigliucci still isn't all that notable, and it might show up at votes for deletion. I won't be the one to send it there, though.
- Lastly, the article was not marked in any way as being edited. You wrote step one for a summary, but since that was the only edit, no one would read the summary. I resent being accused by an anon of not reading invisible notices. Please use the {{inuse}} tag if the page is undergoing an edit and you fear detetion.

- It is a new user. It is advisable to be tolerant to newbies. He is not a vandal and creates not a vanity article. You can patiently explain him that copying pages from other sites is bad idea. Besides, the page you quote for copyvio contains nothing but very basic bio facts: "professor of..., PhD in...". It is hardly posible to make a copyvio case from this. It is very easy to modify this kind of text to remove any traces of copyvio. It is much better to have a new contributor. Mikkalai 07:37, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

Sig image
[edit]Hi Casito - you wrote: Use if images in signatures is discouraged for several reasons
- Yes, I know - I've actually done some editing work on that page. You might also note that it is not official policy, just a recommendation, as there is not a clear consensus supporting it. If there was any way that I could put my signature as a text item I would. Unfortunately, my signature is the picture - by which I mean that the Uffington White Horse is how I sign my name when writing or painting. To do otherwise here would feel as though it was not me doing the work. It's interesting, though, that after 25000 edits and a couple of months as an admin, I've had virtually no complaints (from memory, you are the second to mention it in the last six months). If there are many I'll definitely have to consider it, though. Grutness|hello? 07:44, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I realize that it would be in the best interest of both Wikipedia and my sanity if I stay away from Recent Changes and similar pages which put me in the office of Wiki-cop. Without fail, I eventually get upset and bite the newcomers. The previous talk messages should reinforce that point. Furthermore, RC tends to stress me out and I would rather play it cool. I have decided that, at least for now, I'm not the best person to police recent changes and I could be much, much more constructive working in other areas. Even though I am a long way from receiving formal sanctions, I will be sanctioning myself: I am indefinitly suspending my activities on RC. I hope that my time on Wikipedia will be more enjoyable for me, and more beneficial for the encyclopedia. -Casito⇝Talk 02:50, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Howdy. You left a message for me. I don't mean to be rude, but I was just a tad curious as to what flagged me for a welcome message. I mean, I'm no newbie; I've been using the Wiki for the better part of two years now. The troll in our midst
[edit]Actually, I am pretty sure Musachachado did post that article; it was done by 4.174.3.171 (talk • contribs), whose only other contributions are Musachachado-style vandalism to Swiss cheese. This guy just wants to make trouble, and is pulling at both ends. Given Musachachado's history, I think it's quite likely the article is either a copyvio or original research.--Pharos 05:37, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
I ran across this message on my talk page, warning me that "Website defacement is a crime in many countries. . ." Well I really doubt that this could be the case in a 'wiki' format after all. How can you define "defacement" in a 'wiki' format where the general public is invited and encouraged to make changes? The anti-defacement law, if it exists, would apply more to vandalising the Pentagon's homepage, etc . . . things to which the general public does not have access to change. Next, there are jurisdictional problems to address. In which court will the 'wiki-violator' be haled and how? Is this a Federal or State violation? Are the law enforcement officers of one state going to effectuate the apprehension of a wiki-vandal charged under this law in another state? If its a Federal crime, then Federal officers must make the arrest. Next is the problem of proving intent (mens rea). Also, the language of "defacement" might be overbroad or vague and present Constitutional First Amendment issues. Just a few thoughts, no biggie.SamuraiBoywithaDrugProblem 21:19, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
- I've given up trying to rationalize with this troll and his sockpuppets. I know from his IP that he is a Floridian, so his jurisdiction comments make me laugh. -Casito⇝Talk 21:52, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
Don't you realise its a big 'no no' to threaten another user with legal action? Please review the official policy of [[6]]. If you dont apologise I should report you to the administrators for and open and willful violation of this policy. Furthermore, you dont know if I'm a Floridian for sure; I reviewed your IP listing for my contributions and saw some of them tagged as "PA" as well. In any case, my jurisdictional argument still stands. If you wanted to do anything, you'd have to come to my home state and seek an injunction against my use of wikipedia (for which you'd have to show immediate irreprable personal harm, which you cannot). Then after a documented violation of that, then you might be able to press a criminal case. But as it is now, your threats of prosecution only serve to show your ignorance and insecurity.Rainbowwarrior1977 03:35, 19 July 2005 (UTC) (The edit history Rainbowwarrior1977 and SamuraiBoywithaDrugProblem is limited to pages which Musachachado has vandalized)
- My message made no legal threat. I am sorry that you misinterpreted it. Warning someone that they might be breaking the law is not a threat. I never said that either Wikipedia or I would take any legal action against you; I only warned you for your benefit that many localities don't like behavior similar yours and it would be best to change your ways. Furthermore, you have clearly and willfully violated just about every bit of Wikipedia policy that there is to violate including personal attacks against me, so no administrator would take you seriously if you accused me (or anyone else) of a policy violation. Casito⇝Talk 06:20, 19 July 2005 (UTC) (Also posted to User talk:Rainbowwarrior1977)
- Response. Ah, see, you are now backtracking to mitigate the gall of your original statement. What you said to me earlier was that it was a crime "in many countries" (see above). Now you claim that I might be prosecuted in "many localities." I dont know if you haven't heard about little events such as the ratification of the US Constitution or the Civil War, but let me assure you that our various states are no longer considered separate countries. In any case, I highly doubt that internet regulation is a matter in which states are allowed to intervene, for it *probably* would be a Commerce Clause violation (undue burden on interstate commerce). Furthermore, like I said before, any edits made on wiki, due to the inherent open nature of this system, would probably never rise to "criminal defacement," even if it were illegal "in many countries." If you still want to, however, make a plea to the Exalted Grand Council of Khazakstan to intervene on your behalf I guess that's your bag, baby....Rainbowwarrior1977 15:36, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

Auftragsarbeiten
[edit]Can you give me an accurate translation of this word into something that makes sense in English. And, if you have some free time, can you translate the lead section of this page. I'm thinking this system would be a nice addition to the English version. -- иAIяBRIAN0918 20:38, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
- Auftragsarbeiten is a compound word (Auf|trags|arbeiten) which literally means out-cary-work.
- tragen means to cary or wear (as cloths), and Auftragen means to cary out.
- Auftrag seems like it may have additional idiomatic meaning. I looked it up, and it means order (as in to order a pizza, or give an order to a subordinate).
- Arbeit (work) in the de.wikipedia help usually parallels contribution in en.wikipedia.
- Therefore, contribution to orders or contribution through orders is the best translation I can come up with.
- The page is written in somewhat technical language, so I would need to look up many words. This is complicated by the fact that my dictionary is about 100 years old and written in fraktur. I would ordinarily accept the challenge and translate the page, except that I'm moving this Friday and I have little free time. Plus the dewpoint is 21° C here, so it is hard to think. -Casito⇝Talk
- Thanks for the help. It seems like "Work order" or "Commissioned order" might be a good English equivalent. I'll ask one of the Category:user de-3 folks to translate the whole lead section. -- BRIAN0918 21:22, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
