Arbitrary section header

[edit]

Nearly ready for subheadings (and a spot of rearrangement), thanks to some recent substantial contributions by an anonymous enthusiast. And some of those suburbs need to have life breathed into their currently dead links - though some may just need "New Zealand" or something else added, so a "search" would be prudent. Huia, for example, is/was a bird too! Robin Patterson 00:47, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Took Robin's suggestion and added sub-headings. Also expanded the suburbs list - suggest this full(er) list can be used as a link by those who want to add an article on individual areas within the city. Other than that, most of the previous text was included. Changes - Tim Shadbolt was Mayor of Waitemata City, not Waitakere. Also removed reference to Muriwai Beach as it's in Rodney District, not Waitakere City. Ian Ford 23:43, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Westies

[edit]

Hi, I'm a bit unsure about my mention of the Westies nickname. Is this considered offensive by the locals? Thanks in advance for advice. :) -- Jonathan Ah Kit, 2003-10-27, 1940NZDT.

Above paragraph was copied from Talk:Waitakere, New Zealand when I redirected that page to this one Ian Ford 08:43, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Some do, some don't. Hopefully the text I've added to the new section will appease those sensitive Westies who are not enamoured with the tag. Ian Ford 08:43, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Waitakere, Waitakere and Waitakere

[edit]

We currently have a "Waitakere" page as well as a "Waitakere, New Zealand". Obviously a spot of redirection should be employed. Rather than just go ahead and just do it, thought some discussion might be in order. The current Wiki wisdom seems to suggest that "Waitakere" is preferred, as there aren't any of them outside NZ. However - should "Waitakere" be a disambiguation page? We have:

Waitakere - the pre-European Maori chief who gave his name to the area

Waitakere City - this page

Waitakere (township / village) - in the north of the City, has actually had the Waitakere name a lot longer than the city. Not a huge place, but big enough to have a fire station, railway station, store and RSA.

Waitakere Ranges - the big green bit. In the Ranges you'll find Waitakere Dam and Waitakere Falls on the Waitakere River. Ian Ford 23:43, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

  • Great work, Ian. I had forgotten or not realised that there's a "Waitakere, New Zealand" page. Hmmm - looks like I'm the guilty one here! Strictly unnecessary, as you say - "there aren't any of them outside NZ". The Ranges might be worth a page on their own (where the River and Falls and Dam could be described) if anyone's keen, so I've left a link to inspire someone. I added a para to cover the earlier names/allocations; that can be expanded too (eg with your village notes above).
Maybe we should copy the "talk" item over to here?
And you or someone can copy the bulk of your Tim Shadbolt item to a new page for him unless he already has one (eg under his full name). Robin Patterson 01:29, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Redirected Waitakere, New Zealand to here today, and copied the "talk' here as well - thanks for the idea, Robin. Ian Ford 08:43, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

This is still named "Waitakere" - I am pretty sure the official name is Waitakere City. Ingolfson (talk) 10:47, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
