T Block

[edit]

T Block originates from Central Thamesmead, more specifically the Titmuss Avenue and surrounding towerblocks. This area is even known as "T-Block", as T Block is not just a gang it is the territory in which they run. People normally refer to it as "Gogi's" because of the nearest newsagent "Gogi's Supermarket".

Isn't T block a dangerous Thamesmead gang?? Puffin Lets talk! 21:06, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Clockwork Orange and Tavy Bridge

[edit]

Primary source. In this still from the film http://nhindymedia.org/usermedia/image/3/clockwork-orange-5.jpg the characteristic 10-story towers of Thamesmead stage 1 either side of Tavy Bridge can be seen in the background of Southmere Lake.

Compare with this photo of the same spot http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/c/clockwork.html

Secondary sources (not obviously recursive from Wikipedia)

One of the scenes from Clockwork Orange was filmed in the ground floor lobby of the old medical centre. The old medical centre, part of the Tavy Bridge development, has since been demolished. It was accessed mainly from the upper level walkway but there was a lift and it was in the ground floor lift lobby where filming took place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SecondEarly (talkcontribs) 20:42, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bostall

[edit]

If anyone can identify the area called Bostall, please write it up & reinstate the link I just removed. I lived just off Bostall Lane for ten years but never heard of a local area called Bostall. Nealc 16:48, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bostall is listed as a locality in the London Borough of Bexley. There is a Bostall library run by the Borough. Millbanks (talk) 07:39, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mainly on the Bexley side, there is also an Anglican parish (St Andrew). Bostall Woods, and Bostall Heath itself are on the Greenwich side of the borough boundary, as are Bostall Gardens (near Viola Avenue and McLeaod Road) . Hasted in his History of Kent (1797) [1] mentions Bostall as a hamlet near Plumsted, and that it contained Suffolk Place Farm. Rhillman (talk) 11:40, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dates

[edit]

The article does not give a date for the initial development in Thamesmead. My memory is that it was in the 1960s when architects, planners etc used to visit Thamesmead as some sort of "brave new world".

Missing Information

[edit]

A lot of information is missing from this article - development dates (as mentioned above), the role of Trust Thamesmead, details of the lakes and canal system, the fact that Thamesmead South, Thamesmead North, Thamesmead Central and Thamesmead West are essentially separate from each other. Will try to gather further information and add to the article! Rhillman (talk) 11:40, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity

[edit]

What's up with those figures? 67.2% + 44.9% + 5.5% + 3.4% + 3.0% = 124% —Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.143.201.119 (talk) 13:32, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The White british Element is wrong, it's nearer 40% so that would make the totals right! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.7.137.18 (talk) 10:49, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tone

[edit]
  • was definitely not first port of call for immigrants arriving in London
  • Unfortunately, at the time (and probably to this day), more cleaners than bankers resided in Thamesmead and so they were left to rely on the bus.

Some examples. MRSC (talk) 14:53, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Untrue claim

[edit]

Thamesmead built at the end of the 60's was one of the last social housing estates featuring high-rise tower blocks to be built in England.

Nobody object if I reword this. There were countless developments in the 1970s made up of high rise blocks. I could name dozens if I were to be really boring. Mtaylor848 (talk) 12:34, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gang Culture

[edit]

Can we have some more detail on the gang culture as this aspect of the culture seems under-represented. I can find countless mainstream news reports on beatings, stabbings, acid attacks etc, but no mention in this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.202.221.27 (talk) 17:04, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Misfits Filiming

[edit]

Is there any way to include the filming of Misfits in this article? The location features heavily in the series. Nerter (talk) 03:58, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fraud capital of Britain--merge into article

[edit]

Thamesmead was claimed to be to Fraud capital of Britain by a BBC Radio 4 documentary in 2009

East or South London

[edit]

Thamesmead is geographically in East London because of its location due east of Charing Cross, not south east. Saying Thamesmead is in South London is like saying Rainham is in North London just because of it's location north of the River Thames. I have certainly never heard Rainham as being referred to as part of the area. Whether it is culturally in South London or not is irrelevant.--95.145.91.231 (talk) 14:15, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It always depends how you look at it. However, Greenwich and Bexley boroughs are generally considered South-East London, so Thamesmead must be too. There are maps that have Greenwich and Bexley in East London but the majority does not. Check this link. We're not on Wikipedia to promote what we think is right but to reflect was is generally thought is right. Best, Kleon3 (talk) 18:41, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, maybe South East London is the logical choice.--95.145.91.231 (talk) 19:05, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ringway 2

[edit]

Some mention should be made to the Ringway 2 proposals: there are a number of references (I tried providing some, including a Hansard reference and a Project Gutenberg link but there was a problem somewhere). Jackiespeel (talk) 12:42, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thamesmead East

[edit]

I've gathered information on Thamesmead East. Can I re-add it? GlitchyM. (talk) 23:03, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
