Two questions
[edit]I like some of the adjustments and additions made to this entry; however, there are two points I want to question. First, what does the line "the difficulties of real estate development with the pre-existing pollution along the waterfront" refer to? I think that a better second reason for the relatively slow rise in real estate prices in the neighborhood is the proximity to Logan Airport and the noise, traffic and pollution that are the result of that.
My other point of contention is the sentence,"Today, East Boston is primarily known for Logan Airport and the controversy surrounding it." I may have a biased viewpoint--being that I grew up in the neighborhood and lived there for for almost 40 years--but I believe that the community is known, as I wrote, as "a gritty, blue-collar neighborhood" that is often the home to new immigrant groups.
I did not change either of those sentences, however, feeling that--as a local--I should let others decide. -- Jim Correale — Preceding undated comment added 00:12, 24 September 2003 (UTC)
- I know this not the right place to ask this but are a teacher or used to be a teacher in Humana Barnes Middle School or at East Boston High or any other school? - Elpaisa1 20:53, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I taught English at Savio High School for several years. Prior to that I worked at the Boys & Girls Club in East Boston. -- Jim Correale — Preceding undated comment added 23:28, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Map request
[edit]It is requested that a map or maps be included in this article to improve its quality. Wikipedians in Boston may be able to help! |
It would be cool to see a map showing the layout of the old island vs. the current landmass, and also the various points of interest mentioned in the article. -- Beland 18:01, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- I uploaded two Maps, unfortunately the 1836 Map does not include Orient Heights. I will keep looking for a better map from that period. I understand that the PBL will be uploading some local city maps. I also made some edits to the content as not all of East Boston Residents are as opposed to the airport as the original poster. I do not think that East Boston is primarily known for the controversy around the airport. To the contrary it is quiet convenient for frequent flyers, airline attendants, pilots and Airport employees. East Boston, when the Ted Williams tunnel is active, is probably one of the best places to commute from. Creating Sections
[edit]I have a bunch more historical data on East Boston and I am thinking we may want to seperate the page into sections. That is going to take a lot of re-organizing of the article. Might be better if someone a bit more advanced does it - If no one takes the reigns I might take a shot at. MC — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markco1 (talk • contribs) 02:37, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
I will continue to expand and we need to move some stuff around to make the sections make more sence. I removed a section about Polution and problems building along the waterfront as this has changed since there is a new development going up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markco1 (talk • contribs) 02:57, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
As promised I am revamping the article - I am looking forward to anyone who wants to chime in and help out. Cheers Markco1 01:15, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
gardens
[edit]I added a short paragraph on East Boston's community gardens. Not sure whether they count as "places of interest" or as "infrastructure," but I think they deserve inclusion somewhere in the article. 65.213.77.129 (talk) 20:26, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like my paragraph about the community gardens was removed on June 26th by 71.243.38.199, without explanation. Do other editors here agree that the gardens merit mention in the article, or is the general consensus that they're irrelevant to Eastie? Note that the community garden in Jeffrie's Point was profiled as one of the attractions of Eastie on This Old House a few years ago; to my mind that suggests they're worth mentioning here. 65.213.77.129 (talk) 14:33, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
- I think they are relevant, and actually have a few shots from the community garden on Border Street to supplement this part of the article to support the reintroduced material. DickClarkMises (talk) 17:00, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. The new photo you added is lovely! 65.213.77.129 (talk) 12:51, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
photo / link of Barnes School
[edit]The photo is correct. I attended this school in the seventh and eighth grades back in the early 1960's. However, the link under the photo is for a private school of the same name, but located in India. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.138.178.141 (talk) 23:33, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Edit for Wikipedia Edu. Program Course
[edit]I made the following content additions to improve this page on Demographics and I added two sections to this page on Community Resources and Urban Policies. For demographics I added factual information on current demographics in East Boston and provided resources to back up my information added. With Community Resources I added information on organizations provided in East Boston that many locals in the neighborhood use. With Urban Policies, I added information about East Boston housing with resources that link the city's policies on housing and recreational policies. This is being done for coursework in the Wikipedia Edu. program so I would appreciate edit suggestions made to me rather than just changed.Francois1190 (talk) 13:59, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
Edits for Wikipedia Education Program Course
[edit]I made the following additions to improve this page: demographics and housing. I made changes to the demographics of East Boston because I felt that it needed more information on the page and some of the information needed to be up to date. I also added some information on housing and issues around it. Since there wasn't any information on housing and gentrification, I thought it was important to add some information about it. I also added a few sentences to the lead section about the population number in East Boston and mentioned housing. This is being done for a coursework in the Wikipedia Edu Program so I would appreciate edit suggestions made to me rather than just changed. Thank you. (Anafrroku126 (talk) 16:22, 27 April 2016 (UTC))
Edit for Sociology course
[edit]I added to the Urban Policies and for transportation. In Urban Policies I wrote about the new projects and the new resources that is bringing to the east Boston residents. For the transportation they had some information about how to get to East Boston, so I just added about the time changes for the MBT time. Also, about the Sumner Tunnel payments changes. This is being done for coursework in the Wikipedia Edu Program so I would appreciate edit suggestions made to me rather than just changed. Thank you. (Jguzman06 (talk) 16:25, 27 April 2016 (UTC))
Edit for Sociology course
[edit]I made the following changes to community resources because there was a description of them so I added examples of their community organizations that are beneficial to them. I also added a community resource sub header of utilities (water source) because there was nothing written about it yet. This explains where their drinking water comes from. There was nothing written on the health care of East Boston so I added that with examples of a sub header to support the opioid crisis going on. This crisis is ongoing. This is being done for a coursework in the Wikipedia Edu Program so I would appreciate edit suggestions made to me rather than just changed. Thank you. (Kalyn k (talk) 16:28, 27 April 2016 (UTC))

IP reverts of referenced material
[edit]An IP has removed a sentence with direct references - while a reword would not be a big deal this has completely changed the meaning and has also removed the only citation. The IP has kept material in that was supported by this reference, but has still removed it. A second IP has reverted my edit, but I believe these 2 IP's are related to each other. As I have now reverted twice I thought it would be a good idea to support my reason here, on the talk page. Garchy (talk) 17:37, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- Removing sourced content in this case was not appropriate, though I have significantly trimmed the edit and removed the personal stories of hardship which seemed more like WP:PROPAGANDA. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:25, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you - after reverting I reread the material and was going to remove the direct quotes about hardship as well. Thanks for beating me to it! Garchy (talk) 20:34, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
The Golden Stairs
[edit]Where are the Golden Stairs? East Boston wasn't just a home to immigrants, it was a processing center! "Boston's Ellis Island"!
If I have time I'll try to put something in here, but it's a substantial piece of the city's history, and I don't feel comfortable dropping a quick glib citation and walking away.

I went through the history and revised it--still haven't got to the major change for the city, which was the construction of Logan Airport/destruction of the parks and Governor's Island &c. Someone else has been editing as I've been working--I appreciate the input, as I'm no specialist here, just trying to help with the reorganization and East Boston's history is fascinating. Note that Noddle's Island has its own page. It makes sense to ... look at the two pages together and put the pre-East Boston Noddle's history there. I did remove a fair amount of detail about the Sumner land deals. It did not seem relevant to this entry. There is still repetition in this article. Sicklemoon (talk) 14:22, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
