Early edit responses

Again, welcome! Chris Roy 18:31, 11 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for your note on the new user log. I think Irish breakfast sounds like a great way to get started here on Wikipedia. For that matter, it sounds like a pretty good way to get started with just about anything.  :-) I hope you like it here and keep contributing. If you need anything, don't hesitate to drop a request on my talk page. Isomorphic 03:22, 12 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on Jem'Hadar. I hadn't a clue where to begin on that one. :) RadicalBender 15:06, 12 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hey Zoney! I hope you can speak a small bit of Gaeilge, because [The Gaeilge Wikipedia] needs you! I havewn't counted the articles yet but I doubt the number would be bigger than 20. Then there are only 3 users..... :-) . In short: Tar síos chuig an Vicipéid Gaeilge chun cúpla aistreach a dhéanamh. Ludraman | Talk 07:32, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Ditto, Zoney. And do change any errors you see! -- Kwekubo 00:28, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC) (Aka Gabriel Beecham)

Hey there -- I keep hoping that the people who originally listed the pages I cleaned up will come back, verify the changes, and remove the listings. I agree the page is very long, however, and unfortunatly underused. In fact I just skimmed it again yesterday night and though 'gosh, all my changes are still there; people must not be using PNA at all...) Feel free to remove anything I marked as "fixed"; or to move to Cleanup anything so marked. +sj+ 16:23, 2004 Mar 18 (UTC)

Irish breakfast

Aontaim leat, ach cad é a teideal is oiriúnach don leathanach? Nílím rochinnte faoi. -- Kwekubo 00:14, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hey Zoney, tá cabhair ag teastáil uaim. I removed most fo the POV stuff from the breakfast article, leaving it neutral and factual. Jooler reverted it. I am NOT getting into an edit war. Instead I am trying to settle it at the talk page. Will you lend a hand? Ludraman | Talk 09:38, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hunt Museum

Zoney: The best thing to do is what you've done -- mention the fact that you've rewritten the article and where on the copyvio page, right below the copyvio notice. Make sure you state there exactly where you've rewritten the article, too. Our standard procedure is that the articles spend a week on the copyvio page before an admin cleans them up -- that's to allow ample time for someone to rewrite, etc. Things can tend to get a little behind, though (we're only human) So as long as it's mentioned explicitly there, it should get moved up into the article space once an admin gets around to dealing with the oldest items on that page. -- Seth Ilys 00:01, 19 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Between breakfast and Bunratty

Hey Zoney I voted on the Irish Breakfast thing on Vfd. I don't think there's too much danger now of it getting deleted. I was thinking that adding about the culture and history of the Irish Breakfast would be a good idea. I'll have a go but you'd probably be good at it too.
I started an article on Bunratty Castle but haven't got round to adding much more with my studies and stuff. If you could help brush it up a bit that'd be great.
You have very good Irish (pretty damn better than me!) - how long have you been studying? Ludraman | Talk 18:58, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Notice board

I was thinking of setting up an Irish Wikipedians' notice board, either as a subpage of mine or in the wikipedia namespace. It would be a forum for things that are specially relevant to Irish wikipedians. What do yuo think? Ludraman | Talk 21:10, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Yep, sounds good. Implementation - sorry, I don't know what's the best idea. Basically anywhere is the same, a watch has to be added for it to be of use. So it probably is of little consequence where it is hosted.
Zoney 23:52, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Okay - I'll make it as a subpage of my page. Ludraman | Talk 08:22, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)
I've it done. The only thing currently listed there is about the Irish breakfast, but more should be added fairly soon. I sent the following message out to all the Irish Wikipedians:
"There is a new notice board set up for Irish Wikipedians at User:Ludraman/Irish Wikipedians notice board. Ludraman | Talk 09:15, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)"

Dia dhuit

Hello. Thanks for note. Unfortunately I don't have much of my Irish back yet after years of inactivity, and my little An Gúm foclóir póca only takes me so far, so I could get about 3/4 of what you said. Until I get more back, it's best to drop me grammar notes as Bearla on my user page here (I prefer trying total immersion while on the Gaeilge site, as difficult as that is for me right now). So if you don't mind translating what you said to me, that would be great.

I hope to meaninfully contribute there, as limited as I am. I wouldn't dare write anything except it seems like it needs all the contributors it can get. I just hope and trust that my screw-ups can be corrected by people who know how to do it. :) -- Decumanus | Talk 00:42, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Oh, no need to translate. Now I see you were talking about the list of countries on my home page (I was racking my brain trying to figure out what you were talking about-I'd forgotten about that list and thought you were talking about something in an article I'd written). Yeah, somehow rules escape me easily unless I have lots of examples staring me in the face, especially with Irish. I've always liked that little book Progress in Irish because it just gives lots of examples side-by-side without fluff. So I like to have lists of things I know are right until things gel again, to minimize others having to correct my work. You can tell how much I've had to go right back to the beginning. :) -- Decumanus | Talk 00:58, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Sorry for my presumptiveness on the Irish! I just found it somewhat amusing that your examples of saying you were born 'in country x' were all the exceptions to the general rule :o) (all correct, but only for those examples, plus one or two more like Canada)
No real point to the post - sorry - hope you didn't have to spend too long translating!

Stairway

I saw your request for cleanup on stairway. As I contributed much of the material, I'd be happy to do so. Can you please give more specific directions? Thanks. Samw 05:25, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Actually - looking at it again, the structure, sections and contents are very good. But it does need a huge amount of wikification - there's large chunks with no wiki-links. I might have a go at it myself if I get the time - I probably should have been more helpful than just posting it on cleanup - sorry!
Some photos would look great - do you have a digital camera and stairs in your house? I only have the former!
I'll try and contribute something to this topic too!

Social experiment

You are right, this is a disorganized social/political/intellectual experiment, but it is also an encyclopedia, which we can't lose sight of ;). I for one love encyclopedias. I kinda like social experiments too. It interests me that we are all volunteers here, and yet we give each other so little respect for the work we donate. I would assume that in most real life charities, people are decent and kindly towards their fellow volunteer, and are far less likely to assume bad faith. I mean, how could the red cross, or march of dimes, or whatever function if it was as rude as many are here. I have watched the english parliment, and they are far more polite than this ;). I've met alot of great friends here tho, and I love the interface, as well as having been drawn towards encyclopedias since I was able to read. So in the end I have decided its worth tolerating the bastards amongst us ;) Rather like life generally, that. Completely seperatly, I was in Dublin Ireland and a friendly man I met in my hotel lounge started to show me some of the local pubs, but the first place we went into they said he had to leave. I left with him, but when the second place told him he had to leave, I stayed, and asked them why he had to go. They told me he was a "bleedin' bogey". I figured that sounded pretty bad, so I gave them all the coins I had as a tip for getting rid of him for me. I have wondered ever since, what is a "bleedin' bogey"? Let me know if you can, I do appreciate, and thanx for the note. Cheers, Sam Spade 18:23, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Well as for the bogey - I don't know - it may be a Dublin phrase! (We Irish quite often don't understand those from other parts of the country - e.g. Kerry, Dublin, Cork, the North) Perhaps he meant a scrounger? (Guy being pally just to get a free drink or whatnot?)
Contributing stuff, you do wonder of the purposefulness of it. Will Wikipedia suddenly cease to exist someday? Does anyone see the articles? Especially, does anyone but Wikipedians benefit? (I should set up a Google 'site:en.wikipedia.org' bookmark - usually wikipedia results are not high up the list in general searches AFAIK)
Oh well. I've kinda gone beyond the adding stuff till 3AM stage now and editing several hours a day - but now I'm not getting to do much on Wikipedia at all!
Zoney 18:45, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Your quite right that it could disappear at any time, but from what I hear we are free to DL it, since its open source, so maybe we should make back ups (now you've got me worried ;). As far as people using it, heck yes they do. I used it for over a year before I edited, and the friend who reccomended it has never edited it. I know alot of folks who use it, but don't edit. Apparently the polish wiki is one of the main sites returned on random stuff my polish friend types into google. She isn't an editor, but she knows the site well enough from that. I just like immersing myself in info, even if the actual benifit to others is fairly small. Prob a good idea not to spend too much time at it tho ;) Sam Spade 04:18, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)

If I may be so rude as to answer a question put to Zoney, it means "I would like to kiss you". LUDRAMAN | T 18:52, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Dublin Wit

Zoney, I'm making an article on Dublin Wit (nicknames such as The tart with the cart for Molly Malone) because it is fairly well-known. Is Dublin Wit the right name? Would you be willing to lend a hand? LUDRAMAN | T 01:28, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Don't forget the "floozie in the jacuzzi" that used to be in O'Connell street. Then there's the "Spire of Dublin" aka the Spike. "Nail in the Pale", "Stiffey by the Liffey", "Stilletto in the Ghetto". Or as some have quipped, "it's pointless"/"where's the point in it". (Don't know if this is true, but apparently it's the world's tallest sculpture. The reasoning is that all taller constructions serve a purpose - e.g. Eiffel tower for radio).
Zoney 11:23, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)
This is covered in Irish statues and their nicknames Jooler
Hmmm... Actually appears to be "Dublin monuments and their nicknames"! Another false Ireland/Dublin substitution by the lads in the Pale! I agree - this does cover the topic (whatever about the title) pretty well. Zoney 15:17, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)
