Disambiguate?[edit]

I think this is moving towards needing a disambiguation page. "Cherwell" is:

a newspaper
a district
a river

And plenty of the links to plain "Cherwell" mean the river, although the page is about the district (I'm fixing these).

I disagree, midly. Student newspapers aren't important enough to evict a page, and there are a number of other places where we use the 'River ' prefix to disambiguate - see Adur vs River Adur. Morwen 21:01, Mar 19, 2004 (UTC)

Good point... I suppose it's no big deal to fix the few pages which link to Cherwell to mean the river. In fact, I just did it. Marnanel 21:08, 19 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Pronunciation[edit]

The article gives a phonetic pronunciation "Charwell" but this is only used in the south of the district and in Oxford. In the Banbury area the pronunciation is as written "Cherwell". I'm not sure how to render this in IPA or how to add the characters to the page. Bruern Crossing (talk) 22:11, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't either; but in the north of the county at least, the "Cher" part of "Cherwell" is pronounced like the "Chur" in "Churn". It's true that several words are pronounced differently in Oxford; the best known examples are "Charwell" (for Cherwell); "Maudlin" (for Magdalen) and "Isis" (for Thames). Even the name of the city has different pronounciations depending upon whether you're a native of Oxford, come from the county outside the city, or are a university student.
