Jerez Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Jerez) (IATA: XRY, ICAO: LEJR), is an airport located 9 km (5.6 mi) northeast[1] of Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, Spain, about 28.1 mi (45.2 km) from Cádiz.

Overview[edit]

Jerez Airport is a modern airport with the principal arrivals and departures areas on the ground floor. Ryanair introduced regular flights between Jerez Airport and London which helped to increase passenger numbers at the airport to 1.1 million in 2004. Most visitors at the airport arrive from Germany (39%) and the UK (7%), however around 48% of all arriving passengers at Jerez Airport come from domestic flights. One of the leading flight schools is located at the airport, FTE Jerez, based at the airport's old military barracks.[2]

Ground transportation[edit]

There are infrequent buses to and from the airport to Jerez, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Cádiz.

Taxis and car rental companies have lobbied to ensure they are the primary transport options.

Jerez Airport train station is situated to the west of the airport, this is the other side of the car parking, at a 1-minute walk. Even though local trains (Cercanías) and medium distance (Media Distancia) both pass the airport station all day long. Local taxi groups have lobbied to ensure that 90% of services do not stop at Jerez Airport. This makes the timetable quite infrequent and discourages the use of public transport. The rail company 'Renfe' has a seating policy which ensures that arriving passengers will often not even be able to buy train tickets on Media Distancia services as the seats will be full in advance. Overall this makes Jerez inconvenient for travellers on a budget who prefer to use public transport. Your most affordable option is to find other passengers who want to group together to travel to Jerez de la Frontera Station and take Cercanías services from there.
