Palade ehhh Weibel

Hi PFHLai, thanks for improvements on George Emil Palade, such as my clumsy (it was late) misspelling of Dr Weibel's name. You must have followed the link from endothelium!
By the way, what stopped you from adding the URL to the J Cell Biol and just leaving it commented out??? I didn't realise that journal had fulltext going back to the 1960's!

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised to find that ancient JCB article online. (They even have it in pdf format !!)

I originally had the URL ready on George Emil Palade. I removed the external link because I felt that Weibel-Palade bodies deserve a Wiki-page on its own and decided to save the URL for it. I don't know when I'll get to make this yet-to-exist Wiki-page. (I need to read up on W-P bodies first ...) If you feel like it, please go ahead and make the page. Have fun with it.  ;-)

I'm still waiting to find time for completing von Willebrand factor, which was a major undertaking. My resource was a very good review in Annu Rev Biochem (see references there), which also deals with the composition of Weibel-Palade bodies. The one thing that's missing is a proposed mechanism how WPBs are fused with the cell membrane for release (e.g. after ddAVP infusion).

You have made von Willebrand factor a very good, very informative page already. Your figure makes the page very pretty, too. I think factor VIII, the first linked item on the vWF page, needs more help than the vWF page.

Prof. Ewald R. Weibel, the longtime Chairman of Anatomy at University of Berne and former President of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences, probably deserves his own page. He is apparently very famous in lung and respiratory research (which I don't understand.) I've found many Google entries with his name, but most of them are written in German (which I don't understand.) His English CV and bibliography can be found at " http://130.92.22.171/anatomy/person/persondetail_e.jsp?person=weibel ". Very impressive.

Imatinib

I printed out the Imatinib/diabetes/atherosclerosis article. Very impressive; perhaps we should mention on the imatinib page that "imatinib is used in laboratory settings to investigate inhibition of PDGF-Rβ and its potential benefit in other diseases, such as atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes mellitus". Good idea?

Hi Patrick. I saw someone had put Weibel-Palade body on the "requested articles" list, so I wrote something stubbly. I don't have Sadler's article at hand, so I had to reproduce this from memory. Please add whatever you think is suitable. By the way, I have read that Finnish article on atherosclerosis vs vasculitis. Pulmonary Hypertension

We keep on running into each other's edits! Sorry I buffed up on BMPR2... you can see we need people like you to iron out these mistakes, which would otherwise go unnoticed!
Something we also might have to include is this article on angiopoeitin and the related signalling cascade. It might explain how BMPR2 causes PPH. I'll see if I can read it tonight... JFW | T@lk 17:08, 30 May 2004 (UTC)

Well, Dr. Wolff, if you plan to read on Agpt-1 (this is my preferred abbreviation for Angiopoietin-1, but no one listens to me...) and PPH, may I suggest [1] and [2] ? To be frank, I am not quite sure if this controversy/descrepency is encyclopedic yet. More papers are due from both groups soon. There is also another lab group in Colorado working on the VEGF and apoptosis aspects of PPH. I'll probably wait till the dust settles (i.e. when everyone has switched to progenitor/stem cells) before I submit more on the pathobiology of PPH (or PAH, according to the WHO ....)

I have read little about the TGFβ/BMP pathway. It is indeed intimidating, touching on cirrhosis, scleroderma, and other things I know too little about.

Why should the redirect page Cal Ripkin Jr. be deleted? Wouldn't you want someone that typed that in to the "go" box to be redirected to Cal Ripken, Jr., instead of getting a this page does not exist message? (<-- User:Braaropolis wrote this.)

Well, Yeah ! Google-searching in Wikipedia is set up to suggest alternatives when a page cannot be found. I just tried it with "Cal Ripkin Jr". And I was then directed to the right page.

I don't think Wikipedia should waste resources like that and keep such pages that should not exist. The Wikipedian who created the page made a typo and left the page like that. Sigh ... It's already not that easy to log-in these days ..... I wonder how many such unuseful, unwanted pages are there taking up memory in Wikipedia's hardware ....

Anyhow, someone has fixed the 're-direct' (which I almost did.) Never mind. It's okay. Just that I felt I should answer your question.

Thanks for filling out the Charles Frederick Worth reference. I was just too lazy to do any lookup.

I left the American designers blank because I couldn't think of which ones did made-to-order and gave shows. Does Jones New York do custom clothing? As far as I know, fashion houses like Calvin Klein and DKNY are ready-to-wear and not custom.

Amazing that I should be a regular reader of Vogue and unable to figure out which designers do custom. I suppose it's in the interests of the fashion industry to blur the difference between custom and ready-to-wear, because the custom is the loss leader that allows them to get the hype, the buzz, and the ready-to-wear orders.

Me, I'm just a home sewer trying to do couture-quality work.

Sorry, I honestly have no idea if JNY does custom clothing or not. I am very ignorant about fashion, let alone Haute Couture.

I am a grad student and I am broke. JNY is very high fashion to me. I have two suits for weddings, funerals and conferences, one of them is a ready-to-wear JNY suit purchased on gift certificates !

If JNY doesn't belong to the list of haute couture fashion houses, please excuse my ignorance and take it off the list. Thanks.

Yeah, IMO, it's a bit too much work. But such barriers may be needed, considering so much vandals are around Wikipedia ... Babylonia

No, I don't like the idea of a merger because Babylon is for the actual city of Babylon whereas Babylonia is for the entire state. I'll admit the links coming off Babylonia are terrible, but I think if Babylonia were made AotW people will probably improve the satellite articles as well when they use them to dig up more information for the main one. Atherosclerosis

Hi PFHLai. Thanks for your edits to improve organization and details. I have made a few edits, both clarification and a few more details, no photo or drawing details yet.

I could use help breaking the circular link of atheroma to atherosclerosis. I have written a new and failry short page on atheroma, however when I attempted to break the circular database link using the redirect function, I only succedded in breaking the atherosclerosis listing, changing it to atheroma, as opposed to creating as seperate atheroma entry for the link. (At least I then fixed my break.) Can you help?

Personally I think the Commercialism article is vague and speculative. I'm not sure of its anthropological accuracy, and I don't think "cave men" is a real term. With such a high fatality count, I think it can stay on the MainPage. IMO, the explosion in Belgium and the IMF funding to Turkey are less significant news.

I don't know how long this news item will stay on Asunción, though. That page is pitifully short, considering "Asunción is one of the oldest cities in South America." The link from the MainPage may lead more editors there to make more changes .....

Thanks! I pulled some off the list since they didn't have pictures or didn't need much help (in which case I just fixed them up as long as I was there). I don't suppose there's much use in keeping a long (>5) list of articles in the queue because the project is sufficiently dynamic and we only knock off one or two a week from opentask, anyway. -- ke4roh 03:34, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)

Actually, there is a reason to have a long list. I keep many standby items of various lengths (number of letters). With different replacements available, it's easier to keep the length of each line on the Template:Opentask more or less the same [for esthetics reason ....] :-)

I also try to have topics from different fields of study active at the same time.

Given your skillfull handling of Opentasks and your many judicious edits, I think you'd be great admin material. Just make sure you don't get sucked into the black hole of anti-trolling, thorny issues (Polish vs German naming of Gdansk, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and other heartsinks) etc. I use my admin privileges sparingly - reverting obvious vandalism, deleting redirects to facilitate a pagemove, banning notorious vandals and occasionally mediating between the usual suspects.
As for molecular biology: I got a fair grounding in the basic topics during my studies, but I've grown more interested in molecular pathophysiology over the last little while. Please share some more of your knowledge! JFW | T@lk 07:49, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Voyager 2

Re: your edit of "selected anniversaries"---Voyager 2 did not "leave the solar system" in 2003, according to e.g. [3]. I don't know what the anniversary is for... (What does "leave the solar system" mean anyway?)

As I understand the Voyager 2 article, the date August 24, 2003 is merely a random date when the distance to the probe was found by a wikipedian...

There are only a handful of spacecraft which have left the solar system. Voyager 2 actually launched before Voyager 1. Voyager 1 is near the outermost rim of the solar system. There is a photo of Earth from one of the spacecraft, poignantly far away from home, and thrusting farther away with every second. Voyager 2 is not far behind. Since you appear to have an interest in Selected Anniversaries, may I point out that Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/November forward to Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/February do not have the full 3 to 5 selections for each day. Mav started this and I attempted to fill in selections in as fair a way as I could, but I stopped in October. November forward, I put in only the space fillers for each day. I do not doubt that Mav could spend the few moments for each selection, but I am sure that he and I would appreciate any attention you wished to lavish on any of the Selected Anniversary days. Sports

Hi! The problem with sports is that people from all over the world can claim that this or that sport is too 'minor' to be featured on the mainpage. I personally feel that past sporting events should stay off the main page like the Current sports events does for the 'In the news'. I've come across more baseball events than other sports including F-1, chess, etc. As for cricket, I will be taking a months break and will resume later. Astrodynamics...

Hate to disagree with you, but I would call astrodynamics a stub because there is more than one section that simply glosses over things as if they are to be expanded upon later. For example, here are the first four paragraphs of the "Historical Approaches" section:

First, you've got Aristotle and Ptolemy.

Next, you have Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brahe, followed by Isaac Newton.

The Keplerian problem was addressed by lots of very able mathematicians, such as (examples here ... Bernoulli ??? Alan Turing ??? Henri Poincaré, Joseph Louis Lagrange, Pierre-Simon Laplace ).

This stuff is useful for calculating the behaviour of planets and comets and such. More recently, it has also become useful to calculate spacecraft trajectories. See spacecraft propulsion, Tsiolkovsky rocket equation.

This is not a finished product, and as someone who has been a professional editor and copyeditor, I can assure you that only final drafts are acceptable for copyediting. To copyedit this article at this point would be premature and counterproductive.

Also, I've noticed that there is a lot of scientific terminology and equations in the article. I would strongly recommend relegating those advanced concepts to a separate section where experts in the field and adventurous amateurs can examine them. Right now, though, I think they might put off the general audience that Wikipedia is aimed at. In other words, it should be an encyclopedia entry, not a journal article or textbook chapter.

Today is the 150 anniversary of the Charge of the Light Brigade.

National Public Radio did a piece on the Charge of the Light Brigade this weekend. On part of the segment pointed out that as the charge began, the Russian gunners scoffed at the chances of the British solders charging the cannons. They changed their tune AFTER the charge of the Light Brigade: for months whenever even a few squads of British gathered for a charge the Russians viewed their OWN chances with dread.

Romanov Dynasty

Eee... Well, I'm not smart in history, but pretty smart in browsing the web and other sources (especially the Russian ones):) As a rule, all the dates in Russian sources prior to 1918, when Gregorian calendar was introduced there, are Julian, unless otherwise noted. On February 7 1613(Julian) a representative assembly of All Classes of the Land (Vsesoslovny Zemsky Sobor) decided to elect Mikhail Romanov as tsar, but the final choice of the assembly was postponed until the opinion of people in the main towns had been known. It had on February 21 1613 (Julian) and this is the official date of the election and the solemn ceremony to celebrate this [5](e.g. namely this date is mentioned on the official website of Kremlin Museum [6]). It's also interesting, that namely the Julian date (i.e. February 21, not March 3) of this event is mostly celebrated in Russia. To summarize, the date February 21 1613 is much more appropriate to be named as the date of the foundation of Romanovs Dynasty than February 7 1613.

Hello, Panairjdde. Thank you for your interest in Selected Anniversaries. I am pleasantly surprised that someone is actually reading and following the guidelines. Sorry to disappoint you, but the guidelines are a bit old. I guess I should've updated them. I thought I am the only admin doing this on a regular basis, so I .... Okay... For now: up to 3 holidays, and independently, minimum 4 to maximum 5 events per day. This has been the case since last summer. I see that you have been taking things out. Don't worry about them. There is no urgency to restore them. Let it be ... Even if there are six, don't worry. We can cycle them in and out throughout the day if we want to .... I usually aim for 12 to 16 lines on the MainPage (It may be different on your screen, depending on font size, etc.) This should be about what 'Did you know' is also occupying on the right side -- Our space is wider, though. If I can only find 4 suitable events to feature on a certain day, I would try to write in longer sentences. I sometimes also adjust the size of the picture. The idea is to try to get a nice spatial balance on the MainPage. I don't always succeed, as I can't predict nor control the space to be taken by other sections on the MainPage, which can change any minute. As 'In the News' (top left on MainPage) is getting rather short these days, we may have to adjust the SA text length accordingly. We'll see .... Lucky us, most of the existing entries in March are short .....  :-)

All items on the MainPage are currently protected. This is a recent policy to avoid getting vandals who put all kinds of junk on the MainPage. (We sometimes get porn !!!) As a result, all SA templates, 'In The News' and 'Did you know' can only be edited by admins. I don't know how you managed to get thru and edit the SA templates, perhaps a fellow admin missed a click or two on screen..... Regular users are encouraged to post suggestions at the respective talk pages, and you are certainly welcome to do so. I usually check them as I fill up the SA template for each day.

In general, I'd suggest to give slightly more SA before 20th century. I know it's hard, since there are less anniversaries with certified date. furhtermore, I'd introduce more non-American/non-European anniversaries, even if usually these had higher impact on world history. as regards editing, I'll put them in the discussion page of the SA. best regards --Panairjdde 14:19, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your recent In the News updates on the Palestinian prisoners and Tung Chee-hwa. I noticed that you also re-instated the country-specific links (Canada – EU – Hong Kong and Macao – India – UK & Ireland – U.S. ) at the bottom of the ITN section. There was a bit of discussion about this a few days ago. My feeling (and I think the consensus on the talk page) was that these added unneccessary clutter to the Main Page, and were inherently POV. For example, the Hong Kong and Macao item keeps re-appearing there. Hong Kong is definitely a major player in current events today with the Tung resignation, but is not generally a top-six source of international news. For the last few days, these country-specific links have been removed and replaced with a simple pointer to the Current events page. 2. April 14 1944 -- massive explosion rocks the harbour of Mumbai
3. December 6 1992 -- Babri Masjid in Ayodhya demolished resulting in Hindu Muslim riots all over India till December end.
4. October 31, 1984 PM Indira Gandhi assisinated by her bodyguards
5. 11 May & 13 May, 1998 -- India conducts 5 nuclear detonation.

Holi

I'm sorry I confused you. You are partially (80% right) right. As you read, Holi is a spring festival associated with the burning of the demoness Holika. The dates vary according to the Hindu calendar just like Easter, but always falls in March. Now the bonfire part is carried out today (at night) (25 march) and this is called Holi. The throwing of colours happens on the following day and this is known as Rangpanchmi. Though rangpanchmi is a holiday across India, most calenders erroneously call Rangpanchmi as Holi. (this mixup is common in many parts of India). So 26 March is the holiday in India.

To be precise, it would be better if you name the event as 'Rangpanchmi with Holi in brackets (as the term Holi is popular internationally). :) Nichalp 18:21, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)

April 22 anniversary and poison gas

Hi, Just to clarify, 2nd Ypres wasn't the first use of chlorine in World War I but it was the first use on the Western Front. Better wording might be:

The use of poison gas in World War I escalates when chlorine gas is used in the Second Battle of Ypres.

It reads fine, thanks. At the risk of putting my foot in it again, re: Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/April 21, I don't know whether it's correct to day the Red Baron was in the Luftwaffe. My understanding was that the Luftwaffe didn't come into existence until the 1930s. In 1918, at the time of Richthofen's death, the German air force was called the Luftstreitkräfte (which at the moment just redirects to Luftwaffe). Luftstreitkräfte might be a bit obscure and confusing so perhaps just saying "the most successful German flying ace" instead would do. Or leave it as is -- I'm probably being overly pedantic. Question on old edit

Hi,

I noticed that in June 2004 (!!!) you added the datum that Ibn Nafis discovered the circulatory system in 1242 in the article Ibn Nafis. However, this disagrees with the date of 1268 given in circulatory system by a whopping 26 years! I looked online for a source to no avail; do you have a reference for the datum in question? I would like to fix whichever article is in need of fixing, but I can't do it without a reference and unfortunately I can't find one myself. (Internal inconsistencies drive me crazy!) Thanks for your help.

In the news

Hi, PFHLai. I noticed you re-added the link I removed to simple majority on the British election story on the main page. I assume I must have misunderstood the meaning of simple majority, so I wonder if you could set me straight on the matter. Labour's new majority of 67 means it has half the seats in the House of Commons, plus 67. Of course, Labour's share of the vote was well under 50%, but it was the biggest share of any single party. This could be described as a simple majority, but obviously it's the make-up of Parliament that's most relevant to what will happen in the coming months and years, and the PLP has not just a plurality but an absolute majority of the seats. Saying it has a simple majority would suggest to me that we had a hung parliament with Labour as the biggest group. Am I getting some terms muddled up here? Thanks. As I said, I don't fully understand the terms, so a link to majority is probably safest. It seemed ambiguous to me because I thought perhaps a simple majority could have meant something like: Labour 300, Conservatives 250, Lib Dems 100. This would have been a simple majority as I understand the term, but would have resulted in a hung parliament in which Labour could not have ruled on their own, but what's actually happened is that Labour has 67 more MPs than everyone else put together. So I'm not quite sure how that would be expressed but your edit has removed the ambiguity if there was any in the first place (it could just have been my brain malfunctioning). I created Image:Chirac ABr62200 cropped.jpeg and deleted the picture with the ambiguous name. I'm a bit unsure about uploading to the same name — some people may prefer the other photo for reasons for page layout. David.Monniaux 21:48, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

I had a mysterious lower back problem did not abate for more than two weeks. So I had to take some pretty strong pain killers which almost knocked me out (plus I carelessly -- through oversight (a grave mistake!) doubled my dosage). Protected images on main page

When you switched the image on Template:Did you know, you remembered to add Template:Mprotected to the new image, but you forgot to protect the new image and unprotect the old image. Also, the new image Image:Helst, Self-portrait.jpg is from the Commons, so needs to be protected there as well. (I did all of these tasks for you.) Gdr 16:09, 2005 May 19 (UTC)

Yes, images on the Commons are an awkward wrinkle when trying to protect the Main Page. To protect images on the Commons, you first get an account on the Commons, then you apply for adminship at Commons:Administrators, then if you succeed you can protect and unprotect as normal. An alternative procedure is to upload a copy of the image to the English wikipedia under the same name and protect that, then delete it when it's not on the Main Page any more. Actually, the categories from the per-day pages would get applied to the main page, which is obviously bad. The reason they were being categorized in the first place is that I was doing a long run (authorized by Wikipedia:Auto-categorization) as part of an attempt to categorize all pages in the Wikipedia: namespace. I didn't notice that these pages were being transcluded, so I just created a trival category tree for them. Fortunately, some of them were protected, so the bot aborted its run. I've gone back and manually de-categorized the April per-day pages (which is as far as it got). It's safe to categorize the per-month pages because those are not transcluded, so I did a quick remedial run to do that. I've added the per-day pages to a list of pages which should not be categorized. Thanks for noticing my oversight! -- Beland 23:58, 22 May 2005 (UTC)

Well, the use of the apostrophe in "England's" seems awkward to me. England is not a person. I've learnt to avoid it. Perhaps "of England" or "in England" would be better. I wouldn't say it's dead wrong, but to me, it's somewhat 'chatty' English. -- PFHLai 22:08, 2005 May 23 (UTC)

Hmm. OK. Personally, I have no problem with using the apostrophe-possessive with inanimates, but the question of a 'chatty' register is certainly valid. Sometimes, particularly on ITN but also in news-related stories in general, we walk a narrow line between snappy journalistic style and staid encyclopedic writing.
