Em. Can you explain that more completely? Batt O'Keefe may have made an announcement in January 2010 that he intended to dissolve the NUI, but (as far as I'm aware) the NUI is still an extant body. Certainly they are still operating. The articles of all the constituent colleges (UCC, UCD, NUIG, NUIM) all reflect this current state of affairs. Guliolopez (talk) 11:02, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Myths[edit]

Hi. I'm not sure. It would be very easy to get decidedly "unencyclopedic" very quickly. I certainly wouldn't recommend creating a "myths" section, as it would get out of hand with NN/Unverified stuff very quickly. I would recommend taking every myth or superstition on its own merits. In that vein, with regard to the "cross the quad and fail" superstition, if you can think of a way of presenting it as a tradition (based on a superstition) that doesn't invite 100 other unsourced (minor/NN) "myths", then go ahead. Hmm I see your point. I was a tour guide for the college last September and we were given the stories from the offical college tourguide. He detailed the story of the Quad and its mythical link to failing exams. The burying of the statue of Queen Victoria and her later recovery(pretty funny story) was also covered by him. While i can cite for the Queen Victoria story, finding backup for the Quad and crest myths might be difficult. Burklert 11:23, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alumni[edit]

The article should probably have a famous alumni section. Anybody know who can go in there? Fiona Shaw is definitely a UCC graduate. Graham Norton and Cillian Murphy both went to UCC, but didn't finish their courses, so probably wouldn't count.


We should copy the example of the excellent TCD site? Need an alumni section??

Popular Culture Section[edit]

If my memory serves correctly, UCC was featured in an episode of "How I Met Your Mother", would it be suitable to include a section? Sheodred (talk) 09:54, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. My read of the relevant guidelines is that "fleeting references" in TV shows/etc don't warrant a mention. Motto in Irish?[edit]

It seems that the college's motto as Gaeilge should be listed on the page since that's the one that hangs over the main gate.

Awards in lead[edit]

The intro/lead is starting to become a list of awards. This isn't in keeping with MOS:LEAD (which suggests it should "define the topic and summarize the article body"). If there are many of these awards, and they are all worth listing, then (IMO) they should be covered in the "Today" section (or new/specific "Awards" section), and the lead restored to what it's supposed to be. Since I made the above comments, we've added yet more "awards" to the lead section. It really does now read like a "list of awards" - rather than a lead section that is consistent with guidelines. Unless there are other opinions I will be reformatting the lead section to align with MOS:LEAD, and moving the bulk of the "awards" text to a sub-section of the "today" section. Inclined to agree. Without cites or external sources that support notability, it would seem to fail WP:SIGCOV. The article for the equivalent NUIG society would seem fail the same criteria. (No cites. Nothing to indicate that either should have Wikipedia article.) I would note that the UCC Socs page lists ~100 societies - we are steering towards using WP as a hosting platform if each were to be covered separately. Merge/redirect or Merge/delete. Map of campus[edit]

In this recent edit, a photo of a sign showing this map was added. I'm firstly not sure if this is really justified as, while useful, it doesn't really describe the college (also, it's very difficult to read). Would it not make more sense to place this link in External Links? Also, I can't find any mention that it is a free-use image, and a plain photo of it would therefore not be free-use. Hi. I had two reactions to this image. The first was the same reaction/concern as you raise. (That a less-than-high-quality photo of an informational sign/map does not really add much to the article.) The second was a copyright concern. Namely that the content of the informational sign/map (the map itself, the logos in it, the images in it, etc) are likely subject to copyright. In short, a direct "photo of a photo" isn't likely to be considered a derivative work, and is (at best) questionable in copyright/licencing terms. In short: I have removed the image. In Ireland at least, the term public service (and public servant) has a very specific usage. It encompasses all of those employed in the public administration of the state. It includes the civil service, but also those working in a broad range of other areas that are part of the apparatus of government. A bishop may be carrying out 'a public service' in the broader sense of the term, but is not a 'public servant' in normal Irish lexicon.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.228.233.21 (talk • contribs)
Also, I note that you have re-merged the sections. I am not going to get into an argument about secularism, but there is a distinction between state employees and members of the clergy. I will not make any further edits, but please be aware of that the term has a specific meaning in Ireland. Hey. I'm not sure which of a number of seemingly associated IPs I'm addressing here, but will cover some of the points raised.

  • RE: "Public servant". Thanks. Fair play. Given that I asked a quasi-patronising question, I guess I can't complain that I got a response in kind. Touché. I'm happy for the Bishop to have his own sentence. I don't think he needs his own section or his own paragraph however. As typically a single short sentence wouldn't need its own paragraph or certainly not a section.
  • RE: "Alumni are discovered". If another clergy alumnus is "discovered", then - sure - lets add them to the sentence. However, we need to be wary of this section becoming too big. It already represents 10% of the article content. If it gets much bigger it may need to be "split off". Per guideline and precedent.
  • RE: "Eircode". I'm not sure if I'm addressing this to the correct anon (as there seem to be a number of anons in the same ISP network making similar edits and reverts), but guideline and convention wouldn't expect that an Eircode be added to an infobox. One of the anon IPs noted that it might indirectly help with a mapping search - but I would note that this is already extensively covered by the direct coordinates links in the article. In the manner expected by project convention. It was also highlighted that the Eircode was "part of the address" - in which case I would note that this "part of the address" is not "human readable" in the typical sense. And it is only "part of the address" to help automated sorting and routing systems solve a particular problem. Wikipedia is intended for humans to read. And this type of "raw" data (intended for machines) is not really in the scope of the project. (Nor is mail routing, ambulance routing, or pizza delivery in project scope. That is what street directories are for - not Wikipedia.)

Introductory paragraph - too much focus on name changes?[edit]

I find the introduction to this article places far too much focus on the name changes UCC went through over the years. It also makes rather unnecessarily detailed reference to various pieces of legislation that caused or supported these.

Perhaps it would make more sense to open with a paragraph that places the university into context? UCC is, after all, one of Ireland's leading and longest established academic institutions. Describing how it forms part of the fabric of Cork City and the key role it plays in Irish academic research, education and cultural life and also the contributions it makes international research etc etc would make it a more interesting read.

It might be better to put the name changes into a paragraph in the history section? They really aren't very interesting to someone who casually stumbles upon the article, or who might be interested in finding out about the university for academic or tourism reasons.

It needs an opening section that introduces UCC, summarises what is all about and draws readers into the full piece.

Hi. There is a project guideline on this topic. Namely that the lead should lead "identify the topic and summarize the body". If you don't think the current lead upholds this norm, then please propose specific changes. Or I can take a look. (I would note however that "finding out about the topic for tourism reasons" isn't really in line with WP:LEAD or WP:NOTGUIDEBOOK norms). So if proposing changes, bear that in mind....
