Not neutral

You know, I would applaud your attention to NPOV, if it wasn't belied by your recent edits to ICP related articles, which amount to nothing more than POV vandalism. "Haunting" isn't TOO nonobjective a term. The chorus is definitely somber, eerie, ominous. On a side note, I'm unimpressed with this article as a whole. Essays have been written on this song. It won "song of the year" award, or placed in the top 10, in MOST publications that year. Look at acclaimedmusic.net for some of this information. I know I glanced through a book recently (forget the title), that ranked the best songs of the last 10 years or so, and "Stan" was number one; there was a whole essay there detailing what a thoughtful song this was, how it played with multiple meanings, how it was really like a short story, how it brilliantly and succinctly analyzed the artist-fan relationship. ..... Now, Is it obvious from what I just wrote that I'm impartial to the song? YEAH, but there IS a lot to this song. It's more than just "the second single" from that Eminem album. There's a lot to be said about this song, and a lot of people HAVE said intelligent things about this song. Jeesh, the least you guys could have done is mention the Pet Shop Boys parody/response song. Ignoring the chorus for a moment, first verse: 3.5 lines quoted out of 17 second verse: 10 lines quoted out of 27 third verse: 5 lines quoted out of 25 fourth verse: 11 lines quoted out of 27 Total: 29.5 lines quoted out of 96

I don't feel that this is "massive overquoting". Every line in my version was used to illustrate a facet of the song. The new version barely gives the gist of the story and doesn't contain anywhere's near the amount of useful information for readers who might not have understood something like the Phil Collins or Starter cap references. This version contains barely any description of the song's sound, tone or songwriting beyond that it is "haunting".

While the principle of fair use is ill-defined, copyrighted works can be quoted to illustrate a point for reporting or critical purposes. This article in no way functioned as a replacement for actually purchasing the song, and didn't detract from its value. As such, I will be largely reverting back to my version but will make some concessions and cut out a couple more lines. Tuyf-Kat

No way of sending out the tape (nitpick)

"At the end, Stan realizes he has no way of sending out the tape he is recording on, because his car will, presumably, explode or otherwise ruin the tape after he drives off the bridge."

The lyrics are, according to lyricsdepot.com:

Well, gotta go, I'm almost at the bridge now Oh shit, I forgot, how'm I supposed to send this shit out? {*car tires squeal*} {*CRASH*} .. {*brief silence*} .. {*LOUD splash*}

I've always interpreted this shit as meaning simply that he realizes that he won't be able to send the tape out because he'll be dead. At the end of the song Eminem saps, "in the car they found a tape, but they didn't say who it was to"; if the tape had been ruined he wouldn't know this.

What makes you think the tape would be ruined? the only thing wrong with the tape is that its wet, the water wouldn't permanently damage the tape. the car went off a bridge and landed in water, water filled the car and killed everyone inside... even if the tape was broken in half, they could still put it back together and get information off of it after it was analyzed by a crime scene investigator. - Jordan, June 08, 2007

The tape?

Hey, I heard this song again after a very long time the other day. While I was listening to the last of Stan's lyrics, which I always thought was "how'm I going to send this shit out?", I thought that it sounded a lot like "I'm not supposed to sit this shit out", which obviously would put a completely different meaning to it. Is he singing about a real fan?

At http://www.lyricinterpretations.com an anonymous user said "This song is about when one of Eminem's fans "Stanley Mitchell" commited suicide and killed his girlfriend by driving his car off a bridge with his girlfriend in the trunk of his car on March 23 1999." Source for "suggesting an apparently homosexual relationship" ?

During the early part of the song, Stan is in love with Eminem and wants a sexual relationship with him. He has many posters of him on his wall. Dido's character finds that Stan has put pictures of Eminem on top of her in pictures of Stan and her. Dispute with dido

I seem to remember, on more than one occassaion, hearing on television that there had been a dispute between Eminem and Dido with the rights or the royalties to this track. I cannot find anything about it in the main article or indeed the "Stan (song)" article. I wondered if anyone knows anything about about it or if it should be included in either article. Lyrics section

the section on lyrics mentions parts from the video, this is hardly necessary seeing as anything from the music video that is note worthy should go into the music video section. it makes it slightly more confusing, switching from the two like that. also the lyrics shouldn't really contain any mention of the video but in the music video section there should be mention of lyrical content in relation to the video. ^o) stupid me —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.156.171.10 (talk) 21:36, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Section removed

I took out the following section, entitled "Un-Added Part" as it has too little information (and no references at all) to be useful. For example "an interview some time around New Years" isn't very helpful at all. I hope someone familiar with the subject can edit it into good enough shape to include the information:

Eminem had an interview some time around New Years. He menchined that Stan was supposed to be much longer but it too long so they took the last two parts out of it. If they didnt then in the song and music video, Stan would have survived the crash and gone insane. Then he goes up to Eminem's place and tries to kill him but Eminem ends up being the one who kills him.

Stan is fictional

In an interview with Eminem, he states that Stan is fictional. Here is a transcribed interview conducted by VH1 [1]. The section where he talks about Stan:

Eminem: No. Stan was just somebody completely made up, based on what could happen if you take my lyrics too seriously. I'm nice enough and courteous enough to tell the kids at the end of the day this is not how you want to be. You don't want to grow up to be just like me. When I say, "Jump off a f*cking bridge or slit your wrists," that's not what I'm really trying to say. It's tongue in cheek.

Borderline personality disorder

this song is horrorcore and you can tell by the lyrics. i got a citation for horrorcore, i don't see how it is alternative hip hop. unless there's a source for alternative hip hop, horrorcore will be the only genre. HATS STAH (talk) 23:21, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

I think the different uses of this song in popular culture should be added on this section. I only now of a single one by a popular Israeli TV show called "HaYehudim Baim", in which Stan is replaced by Baruch Goldstein and Eminem by God. It's a fictional story of the events preceding the massacre at the Cave of the Patriarchs.
