Self-Defense Forces is the *official* English translation (and the literal translation of the Japanese term), Japan Self-Defense Forces is not but is commonly used by official sources[edit]

The name of Japan's de-facto armed forces is Self-Defense Forces, abbreviated SDF. It is the literal translation of the term in Japanese, "自衛隊"。 This is also true for all the branches, the ASDF, GSDF, and MSDF. However, "JSDF" is the common name in the West (and is used by official English SDF sources), so as per Common Name the title and usage in Wikipedia need not be changed. However, the infobox should include the officially defined name and it should be mentioned in the introduction.

The Self-Defense Forces (SDF) (Japanese: 自衛隊, romanizedJieitai), commonly known as the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), and sometimes unofficially the Japanese Armed Forces, are the unified military forces of Japan established in 1954.

I think this is good. Chokoladesu (talk) 16:39, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adding an explanation on the page is fine, but renaming everything to Self Defense Forces is too generic imo. Doesn't inform the reader of what country. -Artanisen (talk) 06:08, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chokoladesu: It is, it's an improvement on what we have now, and it should be added. Ignore the guy above. It's perfectly clear within the first sentence of this page what country is under discussion and it's perfectly needless to keep repeating JAPAN every few sentences to remind people. (Fwiw, it's even wrong as a matter of general discussion on other pages. Afaik, Self-Defense Force is specific to Japan and everyone else calls their army an army and their armed forces their armed forces.)
That said, your formatting for your entry above was very badly done. If you're going to edit pretty important pages like this, please do be more careful. You have 2 sets of parentheses next to each other, you used a comma between two dependent clauses for no apparent reason, you were careless about what got bolded. You also left the rest of the sentence as it was but it and the line after it both needed work. — LlywelynII 23:51, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
checkY Partially done. Really, we can't rebuild the lead sentence as much as you want while the page is here. The first line should first match the article's own name in almost every case. Support for any future move proposals (this is the wp:primarytopic of capitalized Self-Defense Force) and here's some evidence to back you up. Here's some evidence the page is misnamed regardless: as expected, adj Japanese Self-Defense Force is more common than attrib. Japan Self-Defense Force. — LlywelynII 08:24, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Add branch emblems to infobox[edit]

The United States Armed Forces page has 6 emblems of the service branches in the infobox while the JSDF page has the national flag. So shouldn't it also show the emblems of the JSDF branches? Or is there a specific reason why the US armed forces page is different? -Artanisen (talk) 06:27, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
