Rename[edit]

I moved the ESS article to here because I don't think this interpretation of the acronym is so well-known that the full name should be redirected to the acronym, as was being done. Besides, most articles that linked to it used the full name. I've changed the few pages that used the short form. - dcljr 04:25, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

more information needed[edit]

I was looking for information about when Bell switched from an electromechanical ring tone to an electronic one. I assume this occurred as the Bell System installed ESS exchanges. However, there is nothing in the article about when the changeover to ESS occurred, and related technical details. WilliamSommerwerck (talk) 14:21, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

After a few years of preliminaries the Bell System change to stored program control got fairly underway in the early 1970s and was mostly complete in the late '80s, though this article is not a Bell System one. The change from electromechanical ring tone generators started in the 1960s and was mostly completed in the mid 80s. Jim.henderson (talk) 05:22, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
