The Exchange*

This band article lists one (short) album. They're "planning to tour extensively," their recordings "shine with potential," and most of the article comes from the band's web site. Best of luck, guys. For now, delete band vanity. Gazpacho 23:41, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I love people who scour the recently edited list, hoping they can make their mark by deleting "extraneous" wikis. I am not a member of the Exchange, and only recently became aware of their existence, but I feel that a band like this deserves some attention, lest it sink unnoticed into the deep waters that surround Indie rock. Your request for this page to be deleted is an affront to my hard work; your argument that "most of the article comes from the band's web site" is sorely lacking in objective judgement of what is actually contained in the article: far superior testimonial to the band's actual skill than anything I can write. I simply wanted to highlight the band's existence and write a short summary of who and what they are; no sin, as far as I'm concerned, and I thought Wikipedia being an all encompassing encyclopedia would be a relevant place for the info that I wrote up. It's hard, I know, for people like you to listen to a band that's not "mainstream," let alone allow a page on wikipedia mentioning its existence, because you've never heard of them and don't know what they're about, but....newsflash.....that's what Wikipedia's for. If it gives a potential reader information they didn't know, then it has certainly accomplished its goal. The deletion of the page I created would be a shame considering all the hard work I put into actually making the page: the only other time I've contributed to Wikipedia was to write up another band, Reeve Oliver. Just because The exchange has only one CD out does not mean that it cannot be included in Wikipedia..... Please don't bash a page just because you don't personally like it...and at least listen to their music before you rashly demand for the page to be deleted. Jamirus99 00:21, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Jamirus, please stay cool. I am not commenting, myself, on the band's talent. I am simply saying that, based on the article's text, they don't meet Wikipedia's notability requirement for bands as I understand it. And please don't presume to know my tastes in music. Gazpacho

As I said on your profile page, I apologize for coming off as somewhat harsh. I am not exactly familiar with the wikipedia coding to corss words out, but consider my assumption of what music you listen to be crass and irrevelant; I retract that assumption gladly.

You also said on your profile page that I should state why I find this band to be above "garage bands" and the like...for me, it comes down to two things. One is that the last time I listened to a band I had never heard of before and enjoyed them, it was last year; the band's name was Reeve Oliver, and, as you can see, a year later, they are a successful band that are signed with a reputed label and have toured with bands like Yellowcard...in short, they went mainstream, and I wrote the Reeve Oliver page to congratulate them on their success. With The Exchange, I feel the same way about them that I did a year ago for Reeve Oliver, except more strongly. So chalk reason number one up to instinct that this band is going somewhere. I am very serious about music and what I listen to, and while I am introduced to new music all the time, this is the first time I have been hooked from the get-go.

Reason number two is that I have not found a single person who has not enjoyed listening to The Exchange. Just today, I had four people listen to them....all of them were clamoring for the EP halfway through the first song.

And as for "what Wikipedia's job is," DCEdwards, I respectfully ask that you read my first comment. Who is to say that an all-ecompassing encyclopedia's objective is to not highlight a band that is obviously a cut above the rest? Since when is attention a bad thing? Hearkening back to the days of the Beatles, all the way through the present Strokes and John Mayer, there have always been different ways to talk about bands, and if Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anybody can edit, with a section on music with specific band mentions, then there is no reason a page cannot be had for The Exchange.

I'd hate to say I am basing my convictions on my feelings alone, though in the world of music, that's not necassarily a bad thing. However, my argument is to not delete The Exchange page is partly based on those feelings. I invite anybody interested in deleting the page for lack of content, or "band praising" and anybody involved in the actual deleting of the page, to listen to the band's music on purevolume. If they can't speak for themselves, there's no point to this entire discussion. These guys, and I repeat, are not a hobby band....as I have said, I have been in contact with their pianist, and these are guys who can't wait to graduate (and isn't their devotion to their education further proof that this isn't just a hobby?) so that they can can begin touring and making a name for themselves. I ask if it is wrong for me to write a fairly well rounded article on them before said touring occurs.....I look and I see the answer, to me, is no. Please, keep! ! Jamirus99 01:09, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I've been doing a bit of research, and I found this quote, taken straight from the WP:VANITY description, to be quite interesting: " Articles about start-up businesses or musicians are not vanity pages and are considered acceptable, but it's preferable that the initial author not be someone affiliated with the project."

23Skidoo, there is no copyright issue, don't worry.....however, I could use some tips on removing POV from the article: IE, where and how to improve and remove.....Also, I'm not sure how to remove the asterisk from the title.

I also wanted to say once again that the page is for information, not promotion, so allegating that it's a promotional staging is absurd. There are a ton of other band pages here that are not "famous" Jamirus99 22:14, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)
