Ballad[edit]

7/27/06 Letterman appearance[edit]

Can anyone mod the article with the lineup that just appeared on Letterman? To my eye, Bobbie sang lead and I thought I recognized Pervis (2nd from right) and Henry (far left). Does anyone know who the other two were? What happened (who was) the short guy from the 1970s?

Love is in Season[edit]

Does anyone know where I can download the track 'Love Is In Season' I believe it was released in 1984 on Atlantic records.

Lies[edit]

Personally, I take issue with the following sentence:

'The Spinners are known in the United Kingdom as The Detroit Spinners or The Motown Spinners because a Liverpool-based folk band had taken the name "The Spinners" in Britain during the 1960s.'

I'm British and if you say 'The Spinners' to me then the group in this page is the first thing I think of. In fact, I hadn't even heard of the British one until I read this page so I believe that this sentence should be removed.

I disagree. I grew up in the 1970s when the Spinners from Liverpool were quite famous, arguably more so than the Detroit ones. I'm reinstating it. MFlet1 21:54, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
These figures should have citations, just because you call The American Spinners by a certain name doesn't mean it's universally used by those living in Britain. The Detroit Spinners where arguably more popular and where formed first, therefore they should have the name. 72.152.135.75 (talk) 18:19, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I grew up in the 60's and early 70's and can definately say they were known as the Detroit Spinners in the UK. The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles also refers to them as the Detroit Spinners. The British Spinners were popular in the UK years before the Detroit version first charted in Britain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.20.239.230 (talk) 01:04, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
However the Spinners eventually grew more popular than the British group of the same name, and managed to achieve more success than the latter. Personally I could care less, but before you go bluntly adding incorrect information as your heart desires add a citation proving your theory. After all, if it's in the Guinness Book of World Records it should be easy to find multiple sources. Although the British group where popular before The Spinners achieved mainstream success that does not change the fact The American Spinners where formed first. If we argue over the popularity of the two groups we'll merely come to a distorted conclusion seeing as we lived in different areas at the time, until then they should simply be referred to by their respective names. K.H (talk) 06:49, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion here isn't about which version of The Spinners went on to gain greater fame worldwide (there is no contest, the American version were far more popular), or which of the two were named first. The discussion is about how they were named in the UK - do you get my drift? And I quoted the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, not what Americans refer to as the Guinness Book of World Records.--92.21.233.166 (talk) 18:24, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree - the Liverpool group were - rarely off British TV during the mid-late 1960s. I can remember them being on all kinds of shows as guest artists. So by the time this band started pushing out singles in the very early 1970s the British public already had that band associated with "Spinners" brand name. I woudl say that the prefix was completely necessary. AlanMusicMan (talk) 06:19, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Spinnerss.jpg[edit]

Image:Spinnerss.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Background[edit]

Does anyone have a reference for the name 'Spinners' coming from the hubcab? The reference given doesn't actually mention it. Thanks.  Stepho  talk  23:08, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Should name delete "the"?[edit]

I have not done any sort of a through check, but the records and concert announcements I have seen call the band "Spinners," not "The Spinners". Should "The" be deleted from the name here? Sullidav (talk) 15:24, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have a number of their singles and I just checked this. All their singles releases that I have (UK pressings) use "The" AlanMusicMan (talk) 06:24, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Spinners As The Philadelphia Soul Sound[edit]

I think this Wikipedia article doesn't mention enough, or for that matter at all, that the Spinners kind of defined the music genre "Philadelphia Soul". The article seems to make too much of the group's Detroit origins but nearly omits any Philadelphia Soul contribution.

Here, from a famous source, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, the first paragraph on the The Spinners -

"The Spinners remain one of the most beloved R&B vocal groups in the world, celebrated by fans and fellow artists alike. Initially a Motown band with Detroit origins, the Spinners’ lush, soulful harmonies and magnetic stage presence would come to define Philadelphia soul. They achieved massive crossover success, with their songs filling the airwaves and connecting with listeners around the world." (from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, https://www.rockhall.com/spinners-0 )

From the Spinners own website -

"The group created and came to define the smooth sound of Philadelphia Soul, channeling the highs and lows of romance and heartbreak into a catalog of classic hits, beloved across generations." (https://www.thespinners.com/bio)

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pg197676 (talkcontribs) 04:29, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Singles list[edit]

Seems a shame to only list their hit singles. There were a few others too. AlanMusicMan (talk) 06:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
