The Humungous Image Tagging Project[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

That sounds like a plan, oui! - Cheers, Donovan.

Wellington photo - FPC[edit]

Hi. I've nominated your excellent Image:Wellington City Night.jpg as a candidate on Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates. I don't know if it will succeed (it's sometimes a very tough room), but IMHO it should. Keep up the good work, either way. -- John Fader (talk | contribs) 00:36, 3 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the nomination!:) It's looking good, as I've already got two votes of support. Cheers, Donovan. 01:36, 3 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your photos[edit]

Just a note to say your panoramas are inspirational. I also have a Canon G3, but nothing like your skill in using it. I must upload some of the panoramas I took of Auckland's West Coast beaches a couple of years ago.-gadfium 03:58, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'm glad you like them. I look forward to seeing your panoramas on NZ articles. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 04:41, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I just want to say the same, they are absolutely great! When I first saw Image:Wellington City Night.jpg, I couldn't close my mouth until the picture was loaded. And I have 64k! Simply amazing. Jon Harald Søby 15:12, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Later: Therefore, I give you this barnstar, for über-excellent panorama photos! Jon Harald Søby 15:26, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thanks very much.:) If you liked that one, then check out my gallery for more. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 21:38, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Geocacher + Nemesis + Donovan[edit]

2+2=4... Are you who I think you are? :) Grutness|hello? 06:21, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's more like 1+1+1=3, but I think so (assuming that I can read your mind, that is). Hi James, I see that you have contributed to Wikipedia a bit.;) (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 06:28, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

More people into Geocaching? Struth. Just like on wikipeda, my username for Geocaching is Griggonator.

Hi Griggonator. It's a small world, isn't it? (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 06:02, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice Photos![edit]

Nice photos! Digital or film? Thanks for fixing the caption on that Dunedin pic, I was looking over at the left side, and scratching my head. Do you have a picture of a Kabocha? I just did an article, and a picture would be good, worth 938 words. Great pics, keep up the good work. WikiDon

Thanks, I use digital (no processing costs :)). I've only got the food photos that you see in my gallery, that I took for Wikibook's Cookbook. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 03:02, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mosgiel[edit]

I see that we have each provided one of the two pictures on the Mosgiel page - perhaps we should have got User:Robert P. O'Shea to provide the text! Grutness...wha? 05:32, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ha ha, very funny. But, I doubt that Robert has any more expertise on Mosgiel than either of us. I really should dig through my photo album to see if I can find a more specific photograph of Mosgiel. But, I needed somewhere to put my Flagstaff Hill panorama until a Flagstaff Hill article is written (not to mention a Mount Cargill article for my Mount Cargill panoramas that are on the Dunedin page for now). (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 08:49, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've been tempted to start a Mount Cargill article - it's linked from quite a few articles - Dunedin, of course, but also things like Cloud forest. Grutness...wha? 09:00, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, Mount Cargill would be useful, but don't feel that you have to start it. Flagstaff Hill also has some interesting history. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 13:01, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiportal[edit]

Hi Donovan - Cyberjunkie and I have just been putting in a few items on the brand new Wikipedia:Wikiportal/New Zealand page - possibly just as temporaries, but who knows (there isn't any system set up for voting on these things yet), and I needed someting to add as the "Featured picture" on the page. So that Wellington night picture is getting a bit more of an audience :) Grutness...wha? 13:19, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks James. There are only two or three New Zealand related featured pictures on Wikipedia at this stage. But, I assume that you guys will simply select those images that you like the look of to feature. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 23:33, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm currently working on an article about Robert Lawson the New Zealand architect (it's still in users-space, don't bother to correct spelling and grammar, I'll change things a 1000 times yet). I've "borrowed" your great pictures of the castle. Do you by any chance have any taken in daylight, or pictures of any of his other work. James is a photographic accomplice on this, but if you have anything as well, that would be great.

Regards. Giano | talk 12:43, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, I've only got a few point and shoot snaps in daylight, their quality is not that great. Maybe James has some? If not, I'll upload some of mine (but, maybe I'll do it anyway ;). I've been meaning to adjust the levels of my night pictures so that they don't look so yellow (but, I must get around to it). (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 00:39, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Okay, I've dug up one of my daylight image of the castle, along with some views from the top (I'll stick them on your talk page where you're more likely to see them). But, I don't have any of his other work. I'm also without a camera for a couple more weeks. Otherwise, I would simply go out and take some pictures. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 11:20, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Hi Donovan, that's great, one is there now. sorry to here the entrance is expensive, has it got wonderful contents or something, it looks on its website more like a conference centre or party venue. Thanks a lot Giano | talk 12:15, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
The contents are interesting (like a small museum), and the ballroom can be booked for functions. As for the fees, it's privately owned, need I say more... ;) (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 12:31, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
They do look a little pleased with themselves on their website! Giano | talk 12:35, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Your Commons gallery[edit]

Your photographs are excellent, and I felt like heaping praise on you for that. Hang on, let me go get a spoon. Mr. Billion 06:03, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks.:) (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 07:38, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Lawson Images[edit]

Thanks a million, that is exactly what I wanted, especially like the detail image. I'm away this weekend. but hope to have some time for the article next week. Thanks again. Giano | talk 8 July 2005 12:24 (UTC)

Ever tried stereo photography?[edit]

(Firstly thanks for the welcome!)

Your panoramas are amazing, and reminded me of a stereo photography conference I went to many years ago, where an old guy showed his highlights from 30 years of stereo photography. One of his panoramas from Paris (I think) looked like yours.

You may want to try it, more than happy to explain more if needed. --Quiettype 13:21, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. Stereo with a single camera relies on relativly static scenes, these are rare. So, I'll probably stick with the panoramas, but thanks for the offer.:) (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 00:41, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania competition[edit]

I thought you might like to know, that since one of you images was one of the most popular WP:FPC nominations this year, I've entered it into the Wikimania Media Competition.

Also having looked over your gallery of panoramas on the Commons, I thought I should offer you a Photographers Barnstar, but I see you already been given that award above. I'm surprised you haven't transfered it to your main user page. -- Solipsist 19:51, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for entering my image Solipsist. I've now added my barnstar to my user page. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 01:08, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pic of the Day[edit]

Hi Donovan,

And as chance would have it, your panorama of Wellington is up for Pic of the Day on the the 23rd July. You can check and improve the caption at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/July 23, 2005. This may not be cast in stone, as the 23rd is a Saturday, so this will be the second weekend that POTD will be on the Main Page. It might turn out that the wide panorama causes layout problems that we can't solve, but hopefully we will manage. -- Solipsist 18:26, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, hopefully the technical problems can be ironed out. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 21:35, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kiwi[edit]

interesting how you did not use that god awful term kiwi and said new zealander in ur profile...the world needs more people like u

Now that you mention it, maybe I'll change it to Kiwi, thanks for the reminder.;) (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 01:27, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to but in, but this seems a good opportunity to ask a question I've often wondered, do some New Zealanders find it offensive to be referred to as Kiwis (as in racist) or is it accepted as affectionate\alternate term. Giano | talk 07:09, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I was sidetracked, I actually came here to say thanks for the vot on Robert Lawson's FA. Regards Giano | talk 07:13, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've never heard anyone take exception to the term. It has always been a good-natured nickname.-gadfium 09:11, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome Giano. Also Kiwi is accepted as an all-encompassing and affectionate term for all New Zealanders (so it isn't racist, but quite the opposite). (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 10:38, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand portal[edit]

A photo you contributed to Wikipedia, Image:Castle Larnach Exterior Day.jpg, is currently the selected picture on the New Zealand portal. You're welcome to nominate other pictures of New Zealand at Portal_talk:New_Zealand#Selected_picture suggestions, or to view the archive of selected pictures at the picture archive.-gadfium 23:35, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

Hello Geocachernemesis,

My name is Fernanda Viégas and I have been studying Wikipedia for a while now (you can see a paper I published on the subject here). I would like to ask you a few questions about your activities as a Wikipedia image creator. I am fascinated by the pictorial side of Wikipedia and it would be great to hear about this community from one of its members. Would you be available to participate an email survey this week? Thanks, — Fernanda 03:33, 4 April 2006 (UTC) | talk[reply]

Hi again, Geocachernemesis. I have started sending out the questionnaire to participants in the study and it would be great if you could participate too. If you'd like to get in touch with me via email, please use the "Email this user" feature on my page. Thanks! — Fernanda 21:32, 4 April 2006 (UTC) | talk[reply]

Message at Commons talk page[edit]

I just left you a message at Commons:User talk:Geocachernemesis (in case you check here but don't check there). User:dbenbenn 01:35, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry[edit]

I'm virtually inative on wikimedia right now. I just don't have time to address questions. But, that may change in a couple of months.:) (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 04:36, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Geocachernemesis. I wanted to inform you that there has been a new policy enacted on en.wikibooks that requests all admins who have been inactive for a year or more to relinquish their admin powers. This is not supposed to be a punishment of any sort, we are only trying to clean house. If you do not plan on returning to wikibooks in the future, we ask that you please return your admin privledges. If, however, you do plan on returning, we would be more then happy to have you back. Please leave me a message on my wikibooks talk page if you have any questions or comments: b:User talk:Whiteknight. --User:Wknight8111 (WB:Whiteknight) 18:21, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Auckland Meetup 2 Scheduled - Feb 10 2007[edit]

Hi Geochachernemesis, long time since you edited here. I hope you've come back to stay.

You are invited to Auckland Meetup 2 on the afternoon of Saturday February 10th 2007 at Galbraith's Ale House in Mt Eden. Please see Wikipedia:Meetup/Auckland 2 for details. You can also bookmark Wikipedia:Meetup/Auckland to be informed of future NZ meetups. -gadfium 07:45, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the offer. I probably won't be able to make it, because I'm just too poor. I'll try to contribute to Wikimedia projects when I can, but real life demands most of my time (like making the final revisions to my PhD). (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 07:51, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good to see you back[edit]

Hi Donovan - I heard you were back and finishing up your PhD - good luck! I also hear you got a surprise free trip to Cyprus last year! Grutness...wha? 09:16, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks James. It'll be good to get the thesis finished and hopefully get a chance at earning a proper living. Yeah, and I didn't even want to visit Cyprus.;) But, at least it increased the list of countries I've been to by one (see the slightly larger list than yours on my user page ;). Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay[edit]

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
