delete subcategory megatokyo[edit]

Unfortunately, I'm not so sure on how to remove subcategories myself. I'll have an ask around and see what I can do. - Vague | Rant 02:15, Dec 7, 2004 (UTC)

Oh, and by the way, I discovered that subcategories are just categories which have been placed in other categories. For example, if I put Category:Pokémon into Category:Nintendo, it would become a subcategory. Same thing in reverse to remove them. - Vague | Rant 04:47, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Lovecraft[edit]

Yeah, I'd say that's a copyvio. The same text appears on this page: [1]. We may be able to claim fair use, but it's very unlikely we'd get away with it. If you'd like to report it yourself, just put this code on the page:

{{copyvio|url=http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/sources/at.htm}}

Then head to Wikipedia:Copyright problems and add this to today's date:

[[The Ancient Track:The Complete Poetical Works of H.P. Lovecraft]] from [http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/sources/at.htm]. ~~~~

If you can't be bothered, I'll probably do it tomorrow. Have a good one! - Vague | Rant 04:13, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

About finding specific categories[edit]

Use search, then turn on the "Category namespace" checkbox, and turn off all the other checkboxes. That will search amongst just the categories. (Of course, this doesn't work when internal search is turned off and redirected to Google and Yahoo!) -- Khym Chanur 12:09, Jan 17, 2005 (UTC)

Histories and copyright[edit]

Hey, thanks for finding that Cloak and Dagger (comics) thing. One comment, though: for Wikipedia:Copyright reasons, we need to keep the contribution history of any content we actually use in articles. So the right way to handle duplicate articles where you use content is to move the duplicate article to a Wikipedia:Sub-page of the Talk: page of the article (so people can still see the history) and make a note on the Talk: page that you did so, and where it is. See Talk:Cloak and Dagger (comics) for an example. (I have fixed this one, obviously, so you don't need to do anything more.) Thanks! Noel (talk) 14:47, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Spelling[edit]

You are right, spelling is very important. Have you heard of Wikipedia:Text editor support? Made my life so much easier. Oleg Alexandrov 05:24, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Here is my solution: Use the Mozilla Firefox internet web browser, and then add the SpellBound spell-check extension. There are a large number of different word lists that you can add beyond the American English one that it ships with, so you can spell-check Wikipedia articles that use either American or British English. BlankVerse 14:20, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
My solution is more beneficial for all concerned: learn to spell! ZPMMaker 08:53, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Argh! and aargh![edit]

I'll take care of in 'arf a mo'; have to go do something else first. Noel (talk) 16:00, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I finally got to this (sorry it took me a while), but it suddenly struck me that the article title ought to be "Argh! and Aargh!" (uppercase on second name) since it is, after all, the concatenation of two proper names. Please let me know if this is OK. Thanks! Noel (talk) 02:09, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yes, but that rule doesn't apply to proper names; e.g. Yorktown, Virginia (which happens to be where I live) is not "Yorktown, virginia". I'm taking from the tone of your reply that you have no problem with me doing the page at Argh! and Aargh!, which I will do. (If I have mis-read, it's easy to move it back.) I'll leave a redirect at Argh! and aargh!; if you want that deleted, just list it on WP:RfD. Noel (talk) 13:01, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)
OK, all done. I fixed all the redirects which pointed to any of these to go to the new article, too. Noel (talk) 13:25, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Sure, no problem. (I thought it looked nicer with the caps, too! :-) Noel (talk) 13:56, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Stub sorting guidelines[edit]

I sincerely believe that we really need to lay down the law in stub sorting, and really provide a guideline. I believe that we should all attempt to reach a general consensus by April 2, 2005 in a set of rules that we can follow. Once we have built a set of guidelines, we can formally create a policy out of those guidelines. We need to define what a specialized topic stub is, how many articles it should cover, when is it appropriate to create it, what defines its need for its creation, what defines its need for deletion, what criteria it should follow, what are the general steps should one take when sorting a stub, whether or not to start using subst: for all templates, whether or not use subst: for all templates created by the meta-templates, and any other matters that may come up in consideration. I thank jag123 for initially creating the subpage for the project at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. Even though they have been discussed, I feel that we really need to confirm everything. For that, we should discuss each issue with its own sections, and raise a list of issues that we need to nail down before really continuing on. The English Wikipedia is nearly at 500k articles. Either the MediaWiki software needs to handle stubs such that they can be found with a simple union of categories, or the sorting is done manually by Wikipedians. Personally, I think the latter is less taxing on the server load, especially when we use subst:, which I think would help the Wikipedia out, performance wise. Please make your comments at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. I apologize for making this somewhat of a spam notice, but since the project has more members, the project can finally decide on these important issues at hand. -- AllyUnion (talk) 23:24, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hannerism[edit]

Hi, you put an "NPOV" tag on the talk page of Hannerism. If there should be an NPOV tag at all, I think it should be on the article page itself. POV is fine on talk pages, that's what they are here for. -- Aleph4 00:27, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I put the POV tag on the talk page of Hannerism because I wasn't positive the article constiuted POV. I wanted people to come and determine if the article is POV or it's just inherent. At least that was the plan. I'm not sure it worked...on the other hand, you did look at it. Does it look like POV? RJFJR 00:51, Feb 27, 2005 (UTC)

you remove - Category:Electronic amplifiers on purpose? - Omegatron 03:40, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)

reply:

I'm not sure what happened to that edit. It was in stubs so I altered it to tech-stub but the history shows that it was previously tech-stub and had category and an edit to the name that put it in triple single quotes. It looks like I was editing an out of date version except I didn't go to the history (as far as I recall). I've reverted but I don't know exactly what happened. I've seen some other things remaining in category:stub that had been altered (I thought it was just delayed updating of the category. I wonder if anyone else is seeing this? RJFJR 04:10, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)

I checked some more. It's like I somehow edited the original version of the article instead of the latest version. I don't see why category:stub would have a pointer to the old version. It would explain why it was still in category:stub instead of tech-stub. RJFJR 04:19, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)

"Metabolic engineering" a biochemistry article?[edit]

Thanks for attempting to identify what kind of stub "Metabolic engineering" is. However, it strikes me as less a biochemistry article and more a biology or bioengineering or biochemical engineering article. What do you think?

My home compuer is down so I'll only be able to make short period access from work. There may be a delay in my replies, etc.

POPs?[edit]

Hi, user Pernille here. Where did the article on Persistent Organic Pollutants go? You asked me about copyrights and now I can't seem to find them anymore. When I added info to the article, it was a stub, I don't know if that's relevant. 00:13 Mar 31, 2005 (GMT)

Thanks![edit]

Hey - I just wanted to drop by and say thanks for your efforts in sorting stub articles - it really helps Wikipedia! I made 2 stubs once, and to my surprise within a few minutes they were sorted by you! Another time a similar thing happened, and as a result, the article got better in a few days - Thanks! Pictures of Beer[edit]

Thanks for offering for the pictures. I'm personally of the opinion that a posed shot looks much better than a Photoshopped montage, but I guess that anything is better than what's already there. I thought the assignment would be taken up quickly—who wouldn't want to go to a bar and order a bunch of beers in the name of Wikipedia? But feel free to add any images you want to Beer, I'm sure they'll be appreciated. —Sean κ. 21:04, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

VFD[edit]

Greetings! Yes, I think it's safe to remove the VfD tag from the first two as invalid, since they're listed on RfD; I'll go ahead and do that. For the other, finishing the nomination seems reasonable, since it is now an article and has votes on it already; it does look like a clear keep but it's probably better to follow process and list them on the day page. Thanks for spotting those. Mindspillage (spill yours?) 03:17, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

lots of edits, not an admin[edit]

Hi - I made a list of users who've been around long enough to have made lots of edits but aren't admins. If you're at all interested in becoming an admin, can you please add an '*' immediately before your name in this list? I've suggested folks nominating someone might want to puruse this list, although there is certainly no guarantee anyone will ever look at it. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 14:26, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)

Castle Arenberg[edit]

Thank you for your note. I'm a new wikipedian and don't understand everything yet. Concerning the Castle Arenberg article, it seems to me, that after your rewording, it is not a copyvio. --Juhanson 20:08, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum soda[edit]

The site seems a mix of all kinds of more or less copyrighted material and I doubt that she has the copyright to the picture. It looks as an image taken from a marketting site, to me. --Easyas12c 05:08, 27 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Castle Arenberg[edit]

I'm still not an expert on copyrights, but I'd leave beautiful out of the sentence The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park. This would make it more objective. One could still describe features of the park, that might make someone think it is beautiful. --Easyas12c 05:19, 27 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks![edit]

RJFJR,

Thanks for the welcome to Wiki. I've been looking for a couple of weeks and just trying to learn some simple editing. Your tips and links will be very helpful. So I was just wondering...how did you get to be the welcoming commitee? I certainly didn't mind, as I said, but rather I was wondering how people get into those types of positions within the Wikiworld. Is it self-appointed? I noticed that your posting was very similar to one left on your homepage by another user. Is it a "pay-it-forward" kind of thing?

Again, I'm just curious. I look forward to hearing from you and working with Wiki in the future. (this seems to be the way the web should be)

Desert planets[edit]

I don't rightly know what to do with it, but asking around gets the suggestion to merge and redirect to Star Trek planet classifications. It strikes me as original research, but then again I don't know enough of the canon to cite. You're probably better off asking elsewhere or proposing a merge on Wikipedia:Duplicate articles and seeing if anyone argues, if you want feedback... Derby Works[edit]

Noted your comments about this article that some anonymous person had started but not done very much. I gave it a quck tidy to remove some factual errors. Even the title is unstatisfactory - it ought to be Derby Railway Works. I'll extend it when I have time. There should be plenty of material. After all its 150 years old! Good work! Those articles look fine to me, besides a couple of very very minor things that I've just changed. I'd definitely support removal of those tags now. Thanks. Stewart Adcock 08:36, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for checking them for me. I removed the cleanup tag from daily build. A procedure question: how do I close it out from the cleanup project? RJFJR 14:12, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Just add a note on the relevent clean-up page that they are done and move the link from Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce to Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/closed. You also need to replace any {{cleanup taskforce notice}} tag with a {{cleanup taskforce closed}} tag if one exists. I've done it for you in this case. Stewart Adcock 15:31, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

date formatting[edit]

I reverted the format of February 11, 2005 to February 11, 2005 in the aticle Arthur Miller. I did this because doing it as one link, I believe (I could be wrong), inhibits the date format preference from formatting it. (That and that article February 11, 2005 doesn't have anything about Arthur Miller in it.) I didn't really understand that in this case there was an article on that particular date in history. If you revert my revert I won't argue it. RJFJR 03:07, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RJFJR.
I believe you are right that the preferencing is dependent on certain types of links at the moment. A developer has spoken on the issue, and said that this is a hack that he hopes to relieve us of soon. Linking and preference ought to be separate.
The February 11, 2005 article didn't (when you read it) have anything about AM on it. I am rectifying that defect.
As for having an article on a particular date - well it is a bit of a fluke. Some of us are experimenting with the idea of individual date articles for recent dates (jury is still out on what "recent" means - something like a year or two) and I randomly picked on the first half of February 2005 as a testing ground.
Equally, I am not going to demand a revert but would grateful if you'd let me do so. Do you mind? Pcb21| Pete 11:55, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't bother me. RJFJR 14:05, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

comixpedia[edit]

I left this at User talk:Hahnchen#comixpedia

I really want to vote to keep Syntax Error (webcomic) at AFD, but I can't quite justify arguing it. (It has two years existence with just over 300 strips archived. I'd like to argue that it's pseudo-3D appearance and use of Maya makes it notable but I don't have the numbers to back it up.) I think the google count may be a little low because it's hard to filter out the computer term 'syntax errors' and I don't trust alexa rankings yet, but I still don't have the nubmers to back it up.

Anyways, is there a procedure for transwiki to comixpedia? RJFJR 17:34, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I personally don't think it is notable enough for wikipedia. I know you have worked on the article, but it just isn't popular enough of have any sort of influence on the outside world, or even webcomic community as a whole. I do however, think that it's very suitable for comixPedia. I've had a look at some of the copied over pages there, and all they do is cut and paste. Histories etc are not copied. Remember to transwiki to an article named "Syntax Errors", the (webcomic) disambig is not needed. - Hahnchen 23:39, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What I posted at Stewart Adcock's talk page :

String inverter is the last August 2004 cleanup entry. Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/String inverter. It's been on User:flehmen/Desk and User:bananagirl/Desk since 9/19. But neither of those people is on the active participant list. Frankly that article looks hard which is why I haven't worked on it myself. Is there anyone on the task force who listed preference as something like I enjoy a challenge? (The original author was contacted by someone during AFD for the string inverter and has promised to clean it up within the next 4 weeks... ). RJFJR 21:06, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You are right about the challenge! I get spasms when trying to read this article. Personally, I'd let AfD run its course before the cleanup taskforce worries about it any further. There will be lots of eyes looking at it at the moment and the usual wiki processes will either improve it or not be harmed by its disappearance! Stewart Adcock 14:50, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Works for me. Thanks! (And also thanks for the comment about RFAd.) RJFJR 15:08, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Transwiking webcomic articles over to Comixpedia[edit]

Until your RFA is over, want me to cover undeletion duties for transwiking webcomic articles? I know of a couple that got kilt on AFD, but could easily just be transwik'ed over to Comixpedia. Lemme know. - A Man In Black (conspire | past ops) 03:32, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I never even thought of that. I was thinking of deleted articles as just gone, but they'd still exist at the admin level, wouldn't they. I was planning on just transwiki-ing future ones but if you remember recent ones and have the time that'd be great. Thank you. Just as a heads-up, LeveL (webcomic) is in need of transwiking. I trust you can handle it yourself, now that you're an admin. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 21:57, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

When you add a tag, like {NPOV}, aren't you supposed to go to the talk page, and say why you tagged the article?

You can't expect other contributors to be able to reach a compromise with you, if you don't say what you think is not neutral. -- Geo Swan 04:13, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I put the NPOV tag on this article mainly to ask other editors to examine it and reach an opinion. Actually, the verify tag, asking for sources, might be a better choice. If people examine it and feel it is NPOV then they are free to remove the tag I added. Thank you for talking to me about this. I just made a few more formatting changes to the page. It's on my watchlist, so I see changes. I'll gladly work on H5N1; realize that I'm on a bit of a wikibreak right now so it'll be slow progress. You're a sysop![edit]

Hi, RJFJR/Archive1, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on Votes for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=

Meta refresh[edit]

Hi. Do you have time to take on the cleanup taskforce "Meta refresh" task for a month or so? All that's needed is to assign unassigned tasks to desks and move "stale" tasks around a bit if nothing is being done. I would be happy to take the task back in a few months. Cheers. Accept. RJFJR 03:46, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was assigned the Dave Walker article with the Cleanup Task force. I have done some copyediting and wonder: how 'serious' is the 'serious copyediting'? Do you want all the brackets gone? It's... Thelb4! 13:20, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

grin. Sorry about that. Serious copyediting means it looked such a mess that I didn't want to do it myself. I looked at it and it appeared to be just a smear. It didn't even seem to be in real sentences.
I happened to glance at it when I saw it had been assigned, to see if anything was happening, and it already looks a lot better. Thank you!
Do you think the flow needs further improving? Are sections logically grouped? RJFJR 13:34, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Popups tool[edit]

Congratulations on being made an admin! I thought you might like to know of a javascript tool that may help in your editing by giving easy access to many admin features. It's described at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups. The quick version of the installation procedure for admins is to paste the following into User:RJFJR/Archive1/monobook.js:

// [[User:Lupin/popups.js]] - please include this line

document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
             + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');

popupShortcutKeys=true; // optional: enable keyboard shortcuts
popupAdminLinks=true; // optional: enable admin links

There are more options which you can fiddle with listed at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups. Give it a try and let me know if you find any glitches or have suggestions for improvements! Lupin|talk|popups 23:33, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My desk - ZPMMaker[edit]

Hey. Thanks for that addition to my desk. My maximum will be three topics, thanks. How does one get a table of contents upon his talk page? Also, how do I add to my own taskforce desk? I attempted to put Loung Ung there and I think I did it but the formatting is all shoddy. Thanks. ZPMMaker 09:00, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I added the template for desk size and interests to your desk. You probably want to edit yoru interestes to be clearer. Tables of content appear when there are enough headings for it to need a table of contents, unless it is suppressed. I edited Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/Loung Ung so the heading would be on that page and added a bullet in front of a comment. And I moved the taskforce notice from article to the talk page for Loung Ung. RJFJR 13:50, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Explain "Expansion",Alternative history in the article:Fictional Resistance Movements and Groups[edit]

Can this be explained ?Martial Law 05:01, 28 October 2005 (UTC) :)[reply]

The current article has a few organization but they are all from Science Fiction movies/televisions series, most set in the future. I think we can find other examples to add. Alternate history is a recognized genre (where something in the past has changed). It's currently a little short. RJFJR 15:49, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The TV show "V" was set in the present, at the time, the '70s or the'80s. The TV show "Sliders" is also set in the present(@ the time this show was filmed). That show featured characters who "slid" to other Earths, some of which had resistance movements formed to throw out tyrants, such as the Communists on one Earth, aliens on other Earths, especially the Kromaggs. "Red Dawn" was also filmed in the '80s in response to the Soviet invasion of Afganistan, in which the US is invaded by Soviet and allied forces.Martial Law 19:06, 29 October 2005 (UTC) :)[reply]

Please help ZPMMaker![edit]

Hi again. I got your message re Transcience of Time and have voted in support of the article's deletion. I was wondering, what is the code to put articles up for the nomination of deletion? I often find a few articles that should be deleted (due to obvious irrelevancy) and figured it'd be easier if I knew the code and thus could put the article up for deletion myself. Thanks. ZPMMaker 23:39, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

(copy of reply placed on user talk page)

The procedure to nominate an article for deletion is at WP:AFD. Take a look through what has been nominated and how the voting is running before deciding if something should be deleted. (For instance, schools, no matter how trivial, almost never make it through AFD.)

In a few special circumstances an article can be speedied and deleted much quicker than going through AFD. The circumstances and conditions (and the procedure) are at WP:CSD (CSD is an acronym for Candidate for Speedy Deletion).

Hope that helps, RJFJR 14:16, 11 November 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Lois and Clark[edit]

Well, I figured that, as the subject matter was drawn from comics (no pun intended), that the tag would be appropriate. I've also tagged a few other television shows, such as Smallville, and I believe I tagged the Justice League cartoons. I'm aiming to cover a widebase of comics, not just the characters and comics proper, but also techniques, artists, and related media, when appropriate. I was merely trying to be bold. However, if you find it inappropriate, then go ahead and untag it. I've been on a rampage lately, tagging for the Comics project.

I just wanted to make sure you relaized it was a television series and not a comic book series. As long as you know that and have taken a minute to consider then it's find by me.

New user help[edit]

Hi RJFJR, thanks for the welcome message on my talk page. I need a bit of help. I checked some of the faqs without success. How do you change a page's title? Or at the very least, how do you make it so that when a person searches under a particular word or phrase they are automatically redirected to a particular page?

Here's the situation: I have been updating many pool and billiard pages (at this point I have essentially rewritten the article on billiards). The article in question is "three cushion billiard." The problem is that there is no game by that name; it is always said as "three cushion billiards" (plural form). While I did read in a faq that article titles should take the singular form whenever possible (I suppose to be inclusive) this is not the case here, as there is no singular of three cushion billiards (actually, not to confuse but you can use "three cushion billiard" in very specific and informal speech i.e., "I attempted a three cushion billiard," but that is not the name of the game, and the game is what the article is about. The name should be changed and even if it isn't, when "three cushion billiards" is types into the Wikipedia search field, that article should come up immediately, not as a redirect link. Can you help?

Reply placed on user's talk page:

First, when leaving a message on a talk page please sign it by type four tildes ~~~~ when this is saved it will automatically be changed into a link to your user page and a date stamp. It make it easier to respond to you. (The laternative is to check the history but that isn't quite as convenient).
You will be able to move a page once you have a bit more experience. A tab called move will appear at the top of the page (this will be available to you after a certain number of edits which Ican't remember off hand).
In the case you asked about I would suggest a redirect is more appropriate. When someone goes to a redirect page they will automatically be sent to the page it points to. Go to the page you want to redirect people from.
Enter the following at the top
#REDIRECT [[page to redirect to]]
save it. The preview will look slightly different from the result after it is saved.
Let me know if you have problems with this or further questions. (my ~~~~ signature:) RJFJR 19:01, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright Examination Rejected[edit]

You requested a copyright examination regarding Castle Arenberg. Sadly copyright examinations is not the right place for your request. The most common reason is that the content has already been added/uploaded to Wikipedia. Such cases (violations or not) are taken care of at Wikipedia:Copyright problems.

Your request will eventually be moved to List of requests which don't belong here on the copyright examinations page. Please try to find the right place for your request as soon as possible. We hope that your request will find the right place and get answered. --Easyas12c 02:23, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted the entire page, and restored the two edits corresponding to the redirect, leaving the new edit by the anonymous user deleted. Dispute on the "Architecture" page. [[/..]][edit]

Could you (or someone) please mediate/arbitrate a dispute on the "architecture" page (see the discussion page for it). normxxx 23:08, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your quick and succinct reply. Things seem to be going a bit more amicably. (And, I am gradually learning Wikipedia, which seems a treasure trove of little known facts— both as to content and about it)
In the event, I used a "request for a third opinion"— but I have little hopes there (none of the current gripes were remotely in the same ballpark as "architecture," so I have little hope of any interest). However, we seem to have picked up an occasional 'other,' and in searching through Wikepedia, I discovered that architecture is an 'inactive' Wikiproject. Looking at the erstwhile participants and querying some, I think we may just pick up at least one more 'other.'
It is a puzzle; how can a category with so many articles seem now to evince so little interest?

Thanks/Merry Christmas![edit]

Hey, RJFJR, I realized that I never actually thanked you for welcoming me to Wikipedia...and that was some time ago! So, thanks for welcoming me! discuss a group of deletions[edit]

Hey, RJFJR!

Thanks for the welcome. I've been trying to help productively; if you have ideas for projects that are actually active and still have some fun work left, please let me know.

Meanwhile, I've stumbled on a set of topics that don't seem to be right. They're copied (with some very light editing) with from another website. They're not obvious copyright violations (I'm not a lawyer, plus I don't see the other site's terms of servie or rights claims), they're poorly formatted, not cohesive, and so on.

How do you think I should draw these articles to the attention of more senior editors?

Thanks!!1!

Fun projects[edit]

Finding a fun project depends on what you consider fun. There is a long list of requested articles, a list of requested images if you have a digital camera or equivalent, if you'd like to add to short articles then there are a lot of stub articles that have been carefully classified by subject. If you'd rather work on cleaning up or doing wiki markup there are articles for cleanup and to be wikified. What kind of work would you like to do?

Thanks for the welcome![edit]

Wikipediting seems to be addictive. I started adding a couple of minor contributions, and can see I'm getting hooked.

The Paragliding page is my first hint of serious addiction: rather than just adding a factette or two, I feel it needs some serious attention:

  • it is oozing with commercial external links which seem to be crying out for deletion
  • it has some factual errors (eg 'launching is usually done in anabatic wind')
  • various bits could do with a bit of editing-down ('anti-bloat'?) - eg especially 'Comparing paragliders to hang gliders'

Could you advise me whether I should simply have a go at fixing it, or is there some procedure I should go through before such cleanup?

CDV 00:27, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did some minor cleanup, and got permission to use an image of a benchrest railgun from Dan Lilja. I have removed the reqimage tag, you may put it back if you would like more images. Check out www.riflebarrels.com, I imagine Dan will release more images if we ask. scot 17:06, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

sources of promotional material[edit]

OK, i finally have a question! As discussed at Wikipedia:Fair use, posters and DVD covers found at such places as the IMDb may be considered fair use at low resolution. I have found hordes of posters for tokusatsu films at other sites, e.g. The Official Godzilla Site and GojiStomp (a fan site). May i assume the same guidelines for borrowing (and, possibly, shrinking) images from such sources?—Crazillatalk|contribs 21:30, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay I've got a question for you about page mergers. The Sanguinarian and vampire lifestyle regulars are all up in arms about the proposed merger. There isn't any consensus on what to do, so I'm reclucant to change anything, but I also don't want to simply remove the merge tags. I asked over on Wikipedia talk:Merging and moving pages but I haven't gotten a reply. Suggestions?
Well, that's the thing. There are only three or four people commenting on the merge, but they're all very vocal about it. And none of it is terribly recent either. Those people who have been commenting on the merge recently are a lot more ambivalent about the idea. I'm inclined to leave it as is, but I have this premonition that as soon as I remove the merge tag, everyone will freak out. (Sorry for forgetting to sign above) --Kerowyn 09:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Reeves James[edit]

Hi, I just wanted to let someone know that I've cleaned up the article on Reeves James, which was listed for cleanup on February 11th, I believe. I edited it for clarity and wikified it, but I'm unable to do any factchecking. Can anybody else do this? Also, I'm a new user, and I wasn't sure if I should have removed the cleanup tag or not. Mgummess 08:32, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I made some further formatting changes and spent a while checking the links. Some of them lead to disambiguation pages so I specified where they should go. Grundig goes to a German manufacturer, I can't find an article on the musical group of that name. I added a category (I'm not sure it's correct but it looks good). You can remove the cleanup tag if you feel cleanup is completed or leave it if you'd like someone else to take a look at it first. I'd say leave it for a little and see if anyone with knowledge of this branch of music finds it. RJFJR 17:07, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you about the tag; hopefully somebody more knowledgeable about that branch of music will go over it. Is there any way someone can specifically mark that article for a music-oriented person to look at it? Mgummess 23:17, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That James fellow again[edit]

I talked with somebody who's familiar with alternative rock named C i d. Both of us agree that Reeves James barely merits a wikipedia article. C i d had never heard of him, and did not come up with any information at all on him after a search online. Also, James is actually not a current member of Sourjane, as far as C i d can tell. The article's been put on the list of proposed deletions. Mgummess 21:59, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Xanth[edit]

A long long time ago in a comment on the talk page of the Xanth series, you placed two links to pages that are redirects now. I was wondering if you would be offended if I removed the links (and left plain text). This is part of my effort to clean up stray links to redirect pages regarding the Xanth series. Acoustic cleaners[edit]

Hello RJFJR,

Thankyou for starting work on the above page. I would appreciate your comments on how to proceed with cleaning it up and making sure it is properly wikified.

Currently i can see 3 main areas to work on.

a. Not happy with 1st paragraph....it seems a bit too dry...but need to think more on this.

b. Reading through the whole article it seems a little to0 wordy....will see if i can simplify.

c. Wiki links...plenty more to create but this takes time as i have to try and find the appropriate wiki pages.

Is there any other guidance you can give me please?

Thanks for the advice and prompt reply about using wiki links...and that is certainly something i can get on with. If you get time i would appreciate any comments on the wiki cleanup section...what else needs improving. All the best

Toyota R engine - cleanup[edit]

You asked:
Can you tell me what Toyota R engine needs before its cleanup tag is removed? RJFJR 21:54, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to the discussion page, it needs a photo of a Toyota R engine. I didn't set the cleanup myself. I've taken the opportunity to do some cleanup anyway. Not sure how successfully. It's not a particularly encyclopedic article. More of a catalogue really. I asked a guy who has a photo of the engine to donate it. Not a fantastic photo but it would do. Unfortunately he didn't get back to me. The webpage he has it on is here: http://toyotadyna.tripod.com/id5.html - manu3d 10:25, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know you didn't set the cleanup tag, but you are the person who's done the most lately to improve it; I just want your opinion on what more it needs or if the cleanup tag can be removed. (It's in the oldest month of cleanups, I'd just like to see that month go away, i.e. be finished). RJFJR 14:37, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the cleanup tag can be removed. It's not a strictly unclean article. But the article is not in a fantastic shape either. It's a list of technical details with no real introduction of the engine and its new characteristics. Unfortunately I do not have that sort of knowledge and I was addressing only the cleaning issue. We might want to substitute the cleanup tag with something that seeks more substantial content for it. I'm going to try to find an appropriate one and I'll specify some information and questions that would be nice to address in the article. - manu3d 17:21, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(after a few minutes): I'd recommend to replace the cleanup template with an {{auto-part-stub}} template at the end of the article, with some notes in the talk page. Alternatively, I'd recommend an {{Expert}} template at the beginning. Or both! =) What do you think? - manu3d 17:44, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stubbing it sounds good, although it's already pretty long. I don't know that there's a problem with the context. I wouldn't bother with the expert tag. Add the stub and clear the cleanup sounds enough to me. RJFJR 19:17, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stubbed with a {{auto-part-stub}} template. Added some guidance to the talk page for anybody coming along with the right knowledge. Ciao ciao! - manu3d 18:18, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not at all familiar with or interested in this subject, so I'm not sure where to even begin on this one. Please reassign it. Thanks. --日本穣 17:50, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

I see you posted something on User:Rovno's page, and I would like your advice about that user. He/she/it keeps reverting, without explanation, and refusing to respond, the page for the song Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'. This seems so trivial, I can only assume he's getting some peculiar joy out of this. I wonder what I should do about it. Wahkeenah 23:22, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Actually, that user's so-called "contributions" consist of pasting in copyrighted lyrics to songs from musicals. Who do I see about that? Wahkeenah 16:43, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks for your note. Until this website truly qualifies as encyclopedic (which it is nowhere close to now), I do not intend to give any quarter to jerks. However, he has not reinstated the lyrics since I zapped them, so hopefully that's the end of it, although by still inexplicably deleting my comment about that one line it leaves an "article" consisting of basically one line saying that it's a song from "Oklahoma". Wahkeenah 02:33, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Oops, I was wrong. Now it's deleting the entire article. Good luck. Wahkeenah 02:43, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • I dig it. I meant to say he was deleting the contents of the article. Wahkeenah 01:22, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

In your greeting to me, you said that I might post to your page if needed. Well. I am playing with the corn bread article, intend to completely rewrite it, and at that time corn pone should disappear. But simply replacing a whole article seems not tha thing to do by just editing out the old and dropping in the new. Can one write an article and ask [you - editors ?] to comment first? And by the way, the latest edit there was minor, someone changed 'skillet bread' to 'skillet brea'. Is there such a term or why might someone have made that change?--Dumarest 12:28, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup Taskforce[edit]

Regarding Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/The Robot Ate Me. I suggested AfDing it, because I can not find any information anywhere. What are your thoughts? — Ilyanep (Talk) 18:33, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a lot of experience with WP:MUSIC. If it doesn't meet the criteria then I'd say go ahead and list it at AFD. RJFJR 02:31, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I would strongly oppose listing it at AFD, or if listed, would strongly argue keep. I have added substantial info to the article to sastify the notability, and on the Talk:The Robot Ate Me page shown how the band pretty definitively meets WP:MUSIC. I'm surprised Ilyanep said he could not find anything! It wasn't hard at all to find the qualifying info on them, actually. Amazon has a number of their albums for sale, cddb has the info on them, 205,000 google hits, several national tours, etc... Hope that helps. Please reply on the talk page for the band, I think that makes the most sense. ++Lar: t/c 15:04, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can you expand the intro and description section of The Robot Ate Me? The article consists mainly of the discography section(s). Have they had ann special influence on their genre of music? RJFJR 15:08, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(replied to on RJFJR talk page, not mine, as I requested threads be kept together, so I'm not sure why a reply was left me on my talk page, but no matter... feel free to refactor this to the talk page for the band where it makes the MOST sense to be kept...) I could, yes, but it's not an area of interest for me, I don't really like them very much and there are WP:Beatles tasks I ought to be doing. I just happened to stumble onto the article in my travels. I feel I have satisfied the concerns raised about notability, but it's still a stub in my view. There is background info here: http://www.killrockstars.com/press/GER042/ including some review excerpts. If someone with interest wanted to, they could use that material to enhance the article. ++Lar: t/c 15:15, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category Questions[edit]

Fine, I will try your page as you suggested. Categories now.

I have a few articles to write, but how are categories determined? How can I add categories, and how to find what categories exist that are relevant?

Now, actual entry - Gordon Bok. Categories are incomplete to say the least. He is a folksinger, composer of songs, and so on - none of the categories of that type are there.

Finally, Category:EMD locomotives. If you look at it you will find for example under 'S' the entry 'SD26' while all others there in the list are 'EMD SD**'. Similar under 'G'.

Hibberts (Gore)[edit]

This is something I don't know how to do. The article is under Hibberts, but that is not the name, it is Hibberts Gore, some 20 miles north of me. Hibberts Gore is a Wiki name, but redirects to Hibberts. It should be the other way. Also, there was a link in that item on the word 'gore' which I have removed - the reference is to a road configuration which in not what the geographic item is - it is a small area of inincorporated land. --Dumarest 20:27, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A little advice please?[edit]

Thanks for welcoming me and answering my question! I thought I should do something mildly helpful, and looked for a random article that I could improve somehow. I got to Intelligenceispower, which had a wikify tag, but after reading it, and googling it ("Intelligenceispower" only gets 123 hits, the top one of which is Wikipedia), I came to think that maybe it needed to be deleted instead. I don't want to make a mistake, so thought maybe you could let me know whether you think it would be ok to suggest it for deletion? Thanks Inner Earth 13:54, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the delay in replying. Intelligenceispower seems to have low notability. Someone has tagged it for prod, if no one objects in 5 days it will be deleted. If anyone objects it will have to go through WP:AFD. If it survives the prod because someone objects you can list it at or AFD or let me know and I'll do it for you. Copy violation[edit]

Take a look at the talk page for Hog Farm. I have a note there, the wholesale deletion of the article for copy violation seems heavy handed, although as I note there the initial paragraph of the deleted part is a direct copy. But what is the process, if any, that I might follow - as noted in my question on that talk page? --Dumarest 18:42, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merging Articles[edit]

Thanks for the "Welcome"! There are several articles that I think need merging, mostly on the topic of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. What is the best way to start a high-level discussion of this (preferably in ONE place, as I don't want to write it all several times) ? Please reply to my talk page. -- FClef 23:24, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you are proposing they all be merged into the same article then I'd say put the discussion on the talk page of the article being merged to and put {{mergeto| templates on the articles being merged there. Hopefully the main article will get a lot of traffic. You can put a mergefrom tag on that page so people now to check the talk page. RJFJR 15:58, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Withdrawal from cleanup taskforce[edit]

After a slow and tortuous stint on WP:CT, I've decided cleanup is not my bag after all. You seem to be one of the caretakers of the project, so I'll let you know about my withdrawal so you can tie up any loose ends you need to.

  1. I've removed my name from all of the categories on the participants' list.
  2. I've moved my three articles from "Assigned" back to "Unassigned": Bosnian War, Pāli, Ken McElroy. These may not still qualify as cleanup projects, especially Bosnian War, because several editors have improved the articles significantly.
  3. I've also noted my withdrawal on each of their respective subpages.
  4. I've removed mention of the cleanup taskforce at my desk, but I plan to keep the subpage for my other pursuits.

Sorry I wasn't more enthused about the taskforce, but ya'll keep up the good fight, it's a noble job. - Draeco 03:07, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
