I removed it because there is a crusade to get this man to stop having people read his tutorial. It has flaws which are unimaginable, and while it will get a user most of the way, the user was taught incorrect things by the Engrish tutorial. Users which have used this tutorial have constantly come to the real forums asking for help with their "go.bat" file, and do not know what their problem is as they did not read the official tutorial but this poor excuse for one. I reccomend anyone remove this link on sight. A much better tutorial is at the top of the official forums, which are already linked to from the article. It's always nice to come back a year or so later, and see that parts of what one wrote, still exists. I just wish I was a registered user when I un-stubbed this. Oh well.

Is Desync even a worthy "Stations" example anymore? The streams have been down since before June, if I remember correctly that is.

dispute media players that support nsv[edit]

I've tagged section Players with dispute because I found at least two of the listed players do not support NSV, real player and VLC. At least VLC plays the audio but gives errors on video. I think what's needed are independent links to reviews, preferably detailed enough for a user to duplicate, that demonstrate the claimed support. In general I believe it is insufficient to list players as supporting a format without details as to which version of player, which version of plugin, and which version, if any, of codecs. So far I have found on Windows XP:

Winamp plays NSV both as stream and as NSV files
MPlayer - not tried yet
Xine - not tried
VLC media player - tried 0.8.4.0 which plays the audio but fails the video after first few frames - no desire to upgrade VLC while it works well for other stuff
RealPlayer Plug-In - tried NSVgen and failed with Real 10.0 build 6.0.12.883 unable to find required codecs - need cite that states plug-in actually works with real player, and which version -
KMPlayer - not tried

I wrote the above while logged out, and after upgrading to VLC 0.8.6b it handles NSV files better - fewer dropped audio and fewer late pictures, but some NSV files still don't play with cannot decode frame errors. This VLC version was also able to handle some streams if I fed it the stream URL (extracted from Winamp bookmark). All this probably belongs in a support forum, but it reinforces my point that a bland statement that a particular player "supports" a format lacks precision. -Wikianon 22:27, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've found some evidence that newer versions of VLC will not play .nsv files, but older versions (specifically 0.7.1) will. I am downloading 0.7.1 to test this theory as I type, and if it works I'll update the page and cite the message board post that sent me in this direction. VLC has had support for the NSV container format (what this article is about) for a couple years, but it only got support for the VP6 codec in 0.8.6 (which is why you only get sound and no video in 0.8.4). Proof is here and here. Furthermore, VLC gets its support for the container format from the same place as MPlayer does -- libavformat. The only difference is that MPlayer can play video by wrapping MS binary codecs, which it used (prior to libavcodec getting native support in 2006) for supporting VP6 video streams in NSV files. VLC NSV Support[edit]

I have VLC and it works with NSV streams. In fact, it has a Service Discovery module that lets you watch ShoutCast TV streams from a directory.

iTunes[edit]

On 8 June 2011, 90.176.193.106 added iTunes to the list of Media Players that support NSV.

I cannot find any source that corroborates that claim. While it appears that iTunes supports a streaming audio technology, I cannot find any documents or websites that say it supports the NSV container.

Furthermore, someone went through the trouble of alphabetizing the list and the addition of iTunes also is in the wrong place if we wish to keep the alphabetical order. --Hydenobuyuki (talk) 02:56, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
