Tone

Name

Depictions in media Section

I'm thinking this section might fare better if it breaks off of the current page, as it doesn't relate directly under the Shinsengumi's history. At least then there shouldn't be any big disputes about if the entry is historically accurate or not. I'd like to know what you guys think. (Gantou (talk) 01:39, 13 August 2009 (UTC))

The word sect

Is the word sect properly used in the article? This word has a strong religious meaning which sounds inappropriate here. alx-pl D 00:16, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

The word "sect" has been changed to "faction". Also, the last sentence of the introduction has been cleaned up.

RK anime

Scenes from the Ikedaya are NOT shown in the RK anime (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Ikedaya_Jiken). Also, since the Shinsengumi WAS a police force, saying that Saito's post-Shinsengumi job was in the Japanese police is like saying that Saito's post-police job was in the police. "Mannequins dressed in Shinsengumi outfits" The mannequins are wearing "Happi" not "Haori". The Shinsengumi Happi is popular souvenir for foreigners in Kyoto and not accurate historical outfit of Shinsengumi. They wore "Haori" not "Happi" --Hskf4 08:09, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Gintama

Please stop adding Gintama to "Depictions in Media."

Gintama's setting is years after the Shinsengumi's era and members of the Shinsengumi aren't in it at all! The characters are very loosely based on the Shinsengumi members but featuring characters based on the Shinsengumi members in the series is not featuring the Shinsengumi members. Such info should be added to the Gintama articles.

I wouldn't say that Gintama is a Shinsengumi inspired work instead I would say it features a reimagined Shinsengumi. Kondo, Okita and Saitoh were all members of the real life Shinsengumi and these three are the most prominent Shinsengumi characters in Gintama I think you should seriously give that some thought--Bushido Brown 21:02, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Even according to the official information, Gintama is a Shinsengumi inspired work and Gintama's Kondo, Okita and Hijikata were only named after the actual members of the real life Shinsengumi. (Again, they are very loosely based on the Shinsengumi members.)

Image

I don't know about anyone else, but I think the main image at the top of the article looks silly. Is there nothing better we can use? Maybe just move an image of one of the statues up? LordAmeth 10:02, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

The image at top is factually incorrect version of the haori. Traditionally mountain stripes were only on the sleeves, not the base. Moden day recreations by some indivisuls put the mountains on bottom. Another picture that is factually correct should replace it.Jinnai (talk) 16:15, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Peacemaker Kurogane

Shouldn't someone mention Peacemaker Kurogane in the media section? The Shinsengumi was pretty much the focal point of the plot and heavily dealt with them on a detailed level. RyoRiazaku (talk) 06:30, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Modern times

Apparently , up to 1945 there was a special police corps also called Shinsengumi . Whether this was the official name or some sort of nickname will have to be established . Here are two occurrences of this Shinsengumi :

1/at http://www.aikidojournal.com/article?articleID=125 , Kishomaru Ueshiba recalls his father in 1942 :

At that time there was a police chief named Kenji Tomita and through this connection my father was invited as a martial arts instructor to teach a group which was similar to the present riot police called the “Shinsengumi.”

2/at http://www.hiranuma.org/english/index_essay.html Takeo Hiranuma has :

When the guard and I came to the front of the neighboring house burned in the air raid, we saw a group of about thirty policemen named SHINSEN-GUMI, who were surrounded by soldiers with machine guns

Color

the Article claims, that the Shinsengumi would have had asagi-iro, an actually **greenish** blue. However, the source cited does **not** include that color - in fact all it says about color and pattern is "Blue and white uniforms".
