Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Hello there! I saw your recent contribution to the article on Warsaw Uprising and I wonder where did you take this information from..? As far as I remember, the Russian president was invited to the anniversary, only that he did not come (no wonder why, BTW). Halibutt 10:54, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)

Ta-Yuan[edit]

Hi Bourquie, I am wondering about the Artikel Ta-Yuan, there it says: "The Ta-Yuan (大宛, pinyin: dàwǎn, Dayuan or Dawan, lit. “Great Yuan”) were a people ..." You can see there are two different pinyin transcriptions. I bet one of these is maybe wade-giles. On Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Translators it says you are a native Chinese speaker, could you please help me, an see after which pinyin transcription is the rigt one. Western Canada[edit]

Your additions to the Western Canada article are without merit. Please research your contributions before revising, and attempting to ruin, an otherwise good starter article. Everything you added was hogwash, including the arguments regarding time zones, economic acivity, and ethnic composition. BC is absolutely a part of Western Canada, and has always been considered to be so. After all, it is Canada's westernmost province. --207.161.41.91 09:32, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Japan, WWII, etc[edit]

Hi. In response to your question, I have a wide range of interests. I am not so interested in WWII in Asia per ce, though I do take an interest in some of the naval campaigns. I have a fairly wide interest in Chinese & Japanese history.

I think you might have misunderstood my comment. I didn't mean people in the "real world" so much, more nationalistic internet trolls who make it their hobby to go around denouncing Japan over almost everything. Anyway I wasn't too sure which article you were referring to. A link would be nice, so that I could have another look at it. Many of the WWII articles concerning Japan are biased one way or another, because there are people on either side that have an agenda.

I would also say the same applies to China in a way. The number of Chinese people that I have come across who keep insisting America started the Korean War, that China was only protecting North Korea, etc is not getting funny anymore, especially given how many British soldiers died trying to protect South Korea. There is historical revisionism in China and Korea - Japan is far from being an exception (though of course that doesn't mean Japan shouldn't be clear about the past). It just means I have little sympathy for people that cry foul over Japan but then tell me to butt off because their education policy is an "INTERNAL AFFAIR!!" John Smith's 22:44, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry was that an ok answer to your qn? I never got a response :) John Smith's 21:23, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your last message, yes there is of course a time and a place to talk about Japan's responses but not on that article, as you said. So can it be listed for deletion, or what? John Smith's 13:11, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I don't know how it can be objective, given that there is no comparison between Germany and Italy, Italy and Japan, Romania and Italy, etc. The best thing would be a single article dealing with how the Axis nations dealt with the issue of the war after 1945.

If you want to save the article, you could rename it and make it a discussion of all the Axis powers. But if it remains as it is, I think I'll have to request it being deleted. It would be like having a comparison between Poland and China, to shame China by pointing out that Poland has become much freer after the Cold War, etc. Hope to hear your response, otherwise I'll have to put in the request - or add my support to a deletion request if there is one already. The BQ could form a Minority Government[edit]

We must consider the possibility (though highly unlikely), that the Green Party of Canada could win seats in the House of Commons. If we use this criteria (Four Federal Parties), then it's possible (BQ minority government). Hypothetically the BQ could get 75 seats , the remaining 233 seats devided (roughly even) among the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP & GP (for Example: 59 seats, 58, 58 & 58). So when you include the Green Party of Canada it's possible. PS remember the Cons, Libs, BQ & the NDP aren't the only Parties running candidates for the House of Commons. GoodDay 16:57, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yep! if ONLY the Con, Lib ,NDP & BQ win seats in this Election (2006), there's no way the BQ can form a government, thank goodness. Can you imagine, Prime-Minister (Let me out of Canada) Duceppe?? Yikes. GoodDay 17:06, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added more to the article, about how the BQ could form a minority government. GoodDay 17:52, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Irish and Chinese[edit]

Although there was some discriminations against other ethncities in Europe, they were relatively mild to what the Chinese had experienced.
Thus, I wouldn't exactly mention discrimination against the Chinese and that of the Irish in the same breath.

I'll be back at length on my own talk page with much more, but even though I just got up and have had only two sips of coffee I wanted to rejoinder the above comments immediately. You clearly don't know much about history of ethnic and class discrimination in Europe or the British Isles, and about the Irish in particular. Even during the railway-immigration period when the Canadian government promoted free land in the Prairies, the Irish were among the most impoverished and discriminated against of all Western European peoples - the mythical "No Dogs or Chinese" sign in Shanghai (which even the PRC hypesters now admit never existed) DID have its real-world counterpart in the UK, and in Ireland itself - "No Dogs or Irish". I suggest you read some Irish social nd political history (instead of focussing on that of your own ethnic group). But the anti-Irish discrimination I was talking about was in the much earlier period when BC was first being exploited/settled by all comers; you have heard about the Irish Potato Famine, haven't you? The Wars of Religion before that? The socioeconomic status of the Irish in the post-famine era (i.e. after the 1840s) was just before the colonization of BC, and the settlement of the West, and even today the Irish are discriminated against in England, and Catholic Irish to this day in Ulster (and in Britain; similarly the discrimination against their kindred the Scots during the Enclosure Acts is in the same category, although slightly earlier, but it too is one reason there were so many Scots in the fur trade). Irish fled to the United States and even Latin America (there is a large Mexican-Irish element, for example) to escape the crushing and systematic poverty and discrimination caused by British rule of their homeland. And the flip side is the many laws and social attitudes against non-Han in China (it was a virtual death sentence for whites to enter the Middle Kingdom before the Opium Wars, was it not?), particularly "foreign devils" from Europe/Britain who ultlimately made the Emperor and mandarins kowtow to the foreign presence, admittedly by the nastiness of the Opium Wars; but make a comparison between the Opium Wars, when Chinese fought Chinese proxies of the British over the opium trade, vs the outright British control and subjugation of Ireland; it's not incidental that the Opium Wars occurred in the same time period of the Potato Famine, which was a deliberate policy of the British to starve Ireland to death (see J. Swift's A Modest Proposal). On the continent of Europe, the experiences of the Poles and others fall into the same category. I'll leave off here, but YES I CAN speak of discrimination against the Irish in the same breath as that against the Chinese; if you can't you just don't know enough Irish history, or enough BC history or railway history for that matter (check into the labour contracts for the Winnipeg-Sudbury stretch of line, for instance). And I repeat my earlier suggestion - that you should study someone other than your own ethnic group's history!!!! I have quite a bit to say about the status of Chinese in the early province and in the colonial period (a very different equation from the railway period, i.e. post-1880) but I'll save that for my own page; but if you were the guy who put in the since-deleted misinformation that the first immigration to Canada happened because of the Opium Wars (the dates of the First Opium War were given, though those of the Second Opium War DO coincide with the founding of the mainland colony) this is a fallacy, and interestingly omits mention of the Taiping Rebellion at the same time; the reason the Chinese came to BC (not "Canada", which BC wasn't part of at the time) was for gold, not as refugees; and they came from California in the first wave; and those in California were not there as political refugees but in search of gold, like everyone else; including the Poles and Irish and others who were fleeing persecution and violent revolution in Europe. By focussing only on your own ethnic group's context you equivocate "everyone else" into one category/group, which they weren't, and as if they had an easier time of it, which they didn't. Take off your ethnic blinkers if you're really a Canadian now; it's the monocultural focus that each new immigrant community seems to have that irritates the long-time Canadians, including those of gold-rush/railway-era Chinese stock (who are derided by the newcomers by the racist epithet "banana" for having assimilated, and as discussed on Talk:Chinese Canadian are "not Chinese enough". Well, the Irish until this century were "not white enough", and in point of fact were not even considered "white" by the English.... Skookum1 18:45, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Name changing of the articles on KCR stations[edit]

Hello Bourquie, I noticed that you recently changed the article names for quite a few stations in the KCR system - in my opinion however the actual station name would be the station name on the big blue signs inside the KCR stations itself in which that would be Sheung Shui for Sheung Shui station and Kowloon Tong for Kowloon Tong station; also, moving all these articles would involve mass changing of links for many articles in the KCR Stations template so I suppose you should put a suggestion on the KCR article instead of mass moving on your own. I suppose it would be best to get a community consensus first!

Also, I'd like to mention that Nam Cheong Station only has "station" after its name because it is a big KCR/MTR integrated station as opposed to Kowloon Tong (KCR) and Kowloon Tong (MTR)'s interchanging - Nam Cheong (KCR/MTR) would not look nice and just Nam Cheong on its own will lead people to think about Nam Cheong Estate as opposed to the station.

Tell me what you think, cheers -- typhoonchaser 05:43, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply, Bourquie, I think I understand your point. I suppose you're right, too, as in Chinese we'd say "going to Sheung Shui train station" instead of "going to Sheung Shui" ... I don't really have much of an opinion on this, but what I'm trying to say is that there will be mass editing needed on the KCR stations template to change all of the articles names with "Station" after the station name.
I apologise that I had overlooked the fact that you had already brought up this argument in the KCR talk page, I assumed you had started moving the articles without proposing anything!
Basically, just remember that you need to edit the KCR and MTR stations template to the moved article name. I'll try help out if I have time. -- typhoonchaser 03:40, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The MTR ones are also named as such. See [1] Iianq 23:09, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now that I think about it, perhaps we can skive off the "(KCR)" at the end of all the KCR stations other than Kowloon Tong and Mong Kok, because most of the stations belong to the KCR anyway and the MTR don't have a station in that particular area. Perhaps that would be a good idea, just follow how Chinese Wikipedia does it. Cheers -- typhoonchaser 13:18, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, Bourquie. About the skiving off "(KCR)" at the end of the article name, I've had a re-read of the moving guidelines and I think it does discourage just copy and pasting, which you have done for some articles. A few stations didn't have the "~ Station" occupied by a redirect (Sheung Shui, Tai Wo, Tai Wai), and I've done Tai Wai Station now. But just to tell you, if a move is unsuccessful, go to the Requested moves page. I've already entered the rest of the unmoved and "unique" stations to the page, and hopefully, an administrator will come and do the dirty work! Thanks for your understanding -- typhoonchaser 08:43, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, all of the stations in the East Rail have been renamed to "~ Station" except, of course, University, Racecourse (many named Racecourse stations in the UK), Kowloon Tong and Mong Kok. I hope that saved you a lot of discouraged copy-and-pasting! ;) -- typhoonchaser 13:47, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I've been rather busy the past week, end of school term, you know... I think I've just realised why the creator put "Sheung Shui (KCR)" and not "Sheung Shui Station" - it's for , for that template - for the ease of just putting the name of where the station is.

Changing the names of the articles should be fine, though it would involve people clicking onto redirects. This template, East Rail does not show the direction of the train but it allows us to accommodate the article name changes easily. I wonder if the "to East Tsim Sha Tsui" bits can be added onto the more flexible template or whether it's really needed? Because soon, if we add their destinations, we'd need to add Lok Ma Chau as well because these trains will also go to Lok Ma Chau... What do you think? --typhoonchaser 04:19, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Venue suggestion needed for a meet-up in Yuen Long[edit]

Hong Kong Metro Station Formats[edit]

Thanks for your suggestion, but I can see that even MTR or KCR seldom use 'Station' within the systems.

For example, in their announcements, 'Station' or '站' is never added after 'Central' or after 'Tai Po Market' or after whichever station.

Also, all their maps drop the last word 'Station'. On their platform walls, 'Station' is not added.

Therefore, I don't think 'Station' is necessary in those station articles, except Nam Cheong Station, which is not possible to name it either Nam Cheong (MTR) or Nam Cheong (KCR). PeterCX&Talk 01:34, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:1JMY.JPG}[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:1JMY.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

 • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
 • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. This would be a very important article for chinese people to read in their native language not in one there not familiar with. Would you consider helping out to translate the article. I found this interview that has the staff of the Naruto series talking about the episodes. Is there any Chinese translator available? Could be very useful to Sasuke Uchiha and Itachi Uchiha. Regards.Tintor2 (talk) 01:46, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)[edit]

Seasons Greetings,

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.

Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 05:20, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

New 10,000 Challenge for Canada[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Canada like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Canada but fuelled by a contest such as The North America Destubathon to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. I would like some support from Canadian wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile! Cheers. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:55, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Translation help[edit]

The "Mazu Cultural Palace" in Songjiang's Fangta Park, where you can get free soy milk and youtiao if you show up at the right times.

Since you were kind/foolish enough to have your name on this list, here's a note that I could use some help with the mess of Mazu temples in Shanghai. There were three; the first two were destroyed; the third got moved to Songjiang and rebuilt; and then as of 2014 Zhabei was considering rebuilding their old one. So:

If you have time and interest for any, some, or all of that, great and please leave a note here saying so. I'm asking all the listed Chinese translators for help, so we wouldn't want anyone needlessly duplicating work. — LlywelynII 02:42, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help verify translations of articles from Chinese[edit]

Hello Bourquie,

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Chinese to English Wikipedia?

File:Language icon.svg

This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Chinese article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including Chinese , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Chinese. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Chinese article, and mark it "Pass" or "Fail" (templates Pass and Fail may be useful). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then marking it "Pass", that's even better, but it isn't required.)

If you can help, please let me know. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 21:55, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Original Barnstar
Hi Bourquie

I love your work especially helping those like me who are unable to read Chinese. I particularly like Sook Ching as it's about Malaysia (and Singapore), Was wondering why you did not expand it as I think Sook Ching spreaded from Hong Kong, etc. Once again ... hsieh hsieh ... Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#Disallowing use of the ʻokina in Chinese romanized article titles proposes that the ʻokina gennerally be prohibited from article titles derived from Chinese whenever it does not adhere to the English Wikipedia policy to use commonly recognizable names.
