Sources[edit]

The content of this page is taken from [1]. Both articles appear to be written by Frederick Noronha, so I am assuming the content is used with permission. I have left him a message. This page also needs to be wikified or moved to wikitravel. At the moment it reads like a tourist guide. Gsd97jks 14:32, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I confirm that I have written the articles and encourage the sharing of this content. Time-permitting, I will also upload some photos of Canacona. Kindly wikify the article.--fredericknoronha 21:34, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reforming this entry[edit]

The article as it stands, even after I have amended it, is badly written. The main or sole complaint is that it is confused in its focus, covering not merely Canacona but also the neighboring districts. That is bad. Each district should be covered in its own page. The villages named in this article should be clarified as to whether they are located within Canacona, and if not, mention of them should be transfered to the entries for the districts they are located within, excepting any incidental mention or reference to them justified by the context. However, despite being myself a Goan, I have never personally visited Canacona, and so I cannot do this myself. WikiSceptic 14:42, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

District or taluk?[edit]

Administratively, Canacona is a taluka of South Goa District, per the South Goa District web site: [2]. Tom Radulovich 21:14, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am aware of that "fact". For my reasons, see Goa vs. India. I am amazed that no one has dared to contest what is posted there. Perhaps you would like to refute it? WikiSceptic 06:26, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have little interest in such wikipolemics. I am here to create an accurate and usable encyclopedia; polemics are fine on one's user page, but don't belong in articles. Administratively, Goa is part of India, and Canacona is a taluk of South Goa District. These facts are widely recognized, including by Portugal. You have every right not to like these facts, and to look forward to the day that they no longer prevail, but they are the facts, and one ought not misrepresent them. Mentioning the former administrative setup of Goa before Indian statehood would be appropriate here; denying that Goa is an Indian state isn't. Tom Radulovich 21:36, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Polemics?[edit]

Polemics? No, I too am not interested in vain disputes.

I am interested in my own self-respect as a human being and as a Goan and in the self-respect of my people, the Goans.

What is at stake is that you and all those who are like you, even though you do not belong to Bharat, wish to legitimize and justify the slavery imposed upon us by Bharat.

This may be called "personal", but since you (in plural) insist on insulting us Goan patriots, I point out that you are nothing but a bunch of cowards and idiots, and if you are so much in love with slavery, please submit yourselves first to it, anywhere you choose and to whomsoever you choose, and only then, when you have spent years savoring its pleasures and joys, dare to preach to us!

We Goan patriots no more wish to be slaves than the Soviet dissidents or the Polies during the Partitions of Poland.

A wise man will, if he cannot help others, take care at least not to hurt insult or injure others, or to interfere where he has no competence; you who live in the comparative political and social freedom of the West, please confine yourself to subjects in which you possess competence, if you cannot have sympathy for the wronged, and keep your noses out of our affairs!

You may like my reply or you may lump it; as for me, I am never afraid of the consequences of upholding truth and justice!

Konkani pronunication of Cancona[edit]

Shouldn't we add a little note on the Konkani/Marathi pronunciation of Cancona (it's "kAnkoN" if I'm not mistaken)?

--Kunal (talk) 08:07, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'll add the pronunciation note, and people can correct as necessary. I'll just nick the above since I'm unfamiliar with the IPA stuff. Kerowyn 07:22, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Consuelho vs Taluka[edit]

Hi, I've changed Canacona's classification from a consuelho (district) of the Nova Conquistas to a taluka of the South Goa district, as this reflects the current administrative reality that has existed for the past 44 years. --Kunal (talk) 13:59, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
