BGR[edit]

At some stage it would be good to take the Bob Graham material, and other stuff on the venerable history the Lakes 24-hour records, into a separate article I think.-Linuxlad 13:19, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Good idea. Could I suggest Bob Graham Round as the key word. It already occurs on Senator Bob Graham's Talk Page. Eddie 11:14, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
OK by me - though that might not be the heading that people would expect to find say the Lakes 24 hour record (and it would be nice if that were listed somewhere); similarly the Welsh 3000 record (including Beard's 3 way passage in 24 hours etc) needs a mention somewhere - it could come under peak bagging but that seems to be covering a slightly diferent activity.

Linuxlad 16:08, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Maybe a few re-directions Lakes 24 hour record etc to one page. I vote for fell running to be the midwife - peak bagging contentious for venerable Bob Graham. Eddie 23:33, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Mountain Marathon[edit]

Should we bring Mountain Marathon onto this page? -Eddie 11:46, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Well there's not a lot of fell running done in the lower classes of say the Saunders (though we try :-)) In the meantime, could change one of the early bold entries for MM to a link?

Linuxlad 16:08, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Done -see what you think. -Unknown
What about a category CS after the examples for a suggested starter? Eddie 23:27, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

General[edit]

Should we give Mountain Running, that's more international, it's own page? -Eddie 11:46, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Certainly many of the fell runs in South Wales and West are not in the same class of brutality as the Ben Nevis run. Eg the early legs of the Cotswold Way, the Beacon Batch on Mendip, the late-lamented Offas Dyke run and the miriad of evening runs up the local hill in the South Wales villages. (NB Some of these indeed are martialled in a desultory sort of way IIRC).
Let's perhaps leave it for a bit and see who else picks into joining us, then split when the classification gets too unwieldy?. -Linuxlad 16:08, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Bon idee. Eddie 23:28, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

POV[edit]

The latest addition is clearly by an enthusiast but is NOT NPOV in my opinion. It takes the voice of 'the writer' and includes a section 'could you do it?' Needs a substantial rewrite to be neutral, I suggest. Linuxlad 08:32, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Agree --Eddie | Talk 09:37, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, I've had a crack at it but it could do with some more work from someone who knows about this subject. Oh and sections/TOC would be nice.Lisiate 02:24, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

2 Histories[edit]

I have put up more headings, and because of this there is no longer a need for a manually inserted Table of Contents. As you can see, however, there are two sections titled 'History'. This is because it is addressed in both the introduction and the conclusion it seems. I think these should be fused. It's up to you guys whether or not you want it at the start or end. Fell Relay Races[edit]

These particular type of events are not mentioned under any of the Fell Running headings but are a paticular branch of the sport that does attract a great deal of interest amongst fell runners. This type of event often acts as a relatively 'safe' introduction to the sport for new comers, as each relay leg, more often than not, is run as a pairing of runners. Mclark57cycling 08:29, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. Somebody who's more social than some of us lone runners and knows the ins-and-outs of Fell Relays? --Eddie | Talk 09:23, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New article for Mountain running[edit]

When considering the second paragraph of this article and the description of mountain running by the World Mountain Running Association (see here), we can see that fell and mountain running are slightly different things.

The two have plenty of things in common, but the need for navigational skills sets them apart – mountain running is much more like cross country running, albeit over steep inclines. Mountain running is competing over a set and "defined path"; the so-called Route choice is entirely absent.

The separation of governing bodies makes the distinction more apparent, and the IAAF has recently incorporated mountain running into the group of athletics. This is not just a technical matter, however, as it is clear that the ethos of mountain running is pretty much identical to that of road running and cross country, just that a steep incline is an additional obstacle.

I shall look to split and create a new article for mountain running if nobody minds. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 11:07, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Or you could put in a separate section that highlights (compares and contrasts) the two activities. I don't mind, but I don't have a dog in this fight. Nobody has responded here, and its going nigh onto 2 years. Happy editing. 7&6=thirteen () 20:50, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Sillyfolkboy. --Kasper2006 (talk) 17:16, 30 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, fell running and mountain running have a lot in common but they are not the same thing and I think each should have an article of its own. Ejdguiseley (talk) 18:55, 30 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Will somebody who knows something about the sport follow up on the late Mr. Smith's new article? Brown, Jonathan (October 7, 2011). "Bill Smith: Lonely death of a modest giant of fell running". The Independent. {{cite news}}: Unknown parameter |access date= ignored (|access-date= suggested) (help) He was a "legend." Tozer, James (October 7, 2011). "Body of legendary fell runner, 75, found in peat bog three weeks after he disappeared". Daily Mail. Retrieved October 7, 2011. He was considered to be a humble 'giant' in the sport. He recently died. 7&6=thirteen () 13:20, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

use of term 'expeditions'[edit]

As someone not acquainted with the sport, I'm not clear what's meant by the following sentence in the section Rocks

"Nor does fell running involve expeditions."

It might be resolved with by linking the term to an appropriate article, but I don't see which one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.240.146.135 (talk) 05:50, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As someone acquainted with the sport, I don't get that either. I removed it. That whole section suffered from a bit of wordiness. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.32.192.34 (talk) 18:55, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
