Untitled[edit]

Chaim is actually the noun. Chai is the imperative form of the verb (also the past and present tense third person male singular, but whatever). Danny

Um, I don't really think Chaim Potok was a painter, despite his writing My Name is Asher Lev. Can anyone prove otherwise? Otherwise information really needs to be cited. 76.127.16.150 (talk) 00:14, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He was an amateur painter who was able to sell his paintings for astronomical sums because of who he was.--Gilabrand (talk) 15:44, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Potok mentioned several times in interviews (which I don't have access to at the moment) that he was a painter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Infoinfoinfo123 (talkcontribs) 07:45, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Importance?[edit]

I think this should be assigned an importance rating; Potok's works have sold reasonably well. I wouldn't place it particularly high, but it does deserve one. 72.49.239.160 (talk) 15:37, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate tone?[edit]

The article has been flagged as having an inapproppriate tone. Unless somebody can cite some clear reasons for this, I think the baner should be removed.

I am not sure about the tone, but the standard of English is very strange.

For example, some clauses are given as complete sentences which are really not:
"A story about a boy who has ..."

"Which he continued to develop with the publishing of ..."
Some words are used in a rather non-standard way:
"A year after" rather than "A year later" (as it is written, it sounds like the writer is saying that something happened a year after he began graduate study
"he began a graduate study" rather than "he began graduate studies"
"which details the issues of the value and identity between Orthodox and Hasidic Jews"
(the meaning of "value and identity" is not clear)
"One of Chaim's most praised works was born into the world"
"The next of his literary work" ("work" should be "works")
"which he let unfold to the community"
"a fascinating history of the Jews of which Potok covers thousands of years"
("of which" should be "in which")
"centered his effort on" should at least be "efforts", but would more naturally just be "concentrated on"
"in the years that trailed" rather than "years that followed"
                etc
The writer obviously knows a lot about Potok, but I suspect that he or she is not a native English speaker and that the text is somewhat influenced by the person's native language. It would be good to have the text edited by someone who is also a Potok expert (which I am not), so that if there are any errors about Potok, these could be corrected at the same time as improving the English. Re: Banner[edit]

While I wasn't the one who placed the banner, I believe that this statement at the end of "Later years" may be part of the reason: "Chaim Potok had a large influence on Jewish American authors and to all who read his books. He was a very intelligent and intellectual writer that is still respected today." While I don't disagree with that, it could be seen as violating WP:NPOV. LordCirth (talk) 01:40, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it does. "Intelligent" is a subjective word almost always used in an emotional context. Tserton (talk) 17:17, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Young Adult vs. Children's Literature[edit]

According to the article, the books The Tree of Here and The Sky of Now are young adult books. It was my understanding that they were picture books marketed to a child audience. Thoughts? W. T. Perkins (talk) 19:08, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
