Recording of appearance on Dick Cavett show[edit]

Rampal once appeared on the Dick Cavett show performing with Julius Baker, another great flutist of his era. It must have been the early 70's. If anyone knows of a way to obtain a recording of this show I would be quite grateful. Please e-mail larry @ larryseltzer.com

Principal flute of the Paris Opera?[edit]

The article claims that Rampal was principal flute of the Paris Opera. There seems to be some doubt about this. In his autobiography, Rampal definitely describes playing at the Opera in Paris. But he does not specially say he was principal and at one point mentions being ready to play second in Der Rosenkavalier and being suddenly called upon to sight-read first because of illness. Does anyone know what the basis for the claim that Rampal was principal? Rcneville 04:09, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photos[edit]

I'm struck by the lack of a photo of Rampal in the article, other than that shown on the cover of his autobiography; can no "headshot" of him be found that could be included without committing a violation of copyright? Vivliothykarios 18:56, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We've been waiting for you to come up with one. :-) But seriously, there are no doubt photos out there that could be donated, if only we got the right person's attention. Students of his perhaps? Makes me wish I'd taken photos the couple of times I saw him in concert... Stan 02:58, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:The Art of Jean-Pierre Rampal.jpg[edit]

Image:The Art of Jean-Pierre Rampal.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Requesting more information[edit]

I edited the first two sections of this article, and noticed a few things need done:

  • In the first paragraph of the second section, it mentions that Rampal receives "first prize," but no mention is made of what the first prize was for. A reference would be helpful here.
  • There is mention of Rampal's autobiography in this section as well. This should be replaced by a reference to the book instead.

I might make it back to do these edits myself after a bit more research, but just in case someone else gets to it before me, there is my input!

I don't know much about this person besides what is in the Wikipedia article about him. I watchlisted this article after doing some copyediting on it; I know it needs a lot more work, and your edits are a good start. Rampal's autobiography is called Music, my Love, as it says in the books section, which itself needs cleanup, but I'm not sure what to do with it. The specific statement in the Beginnings section needs to be cited to a particular page number, at the very least. Also, the "early years" section contains a lot of content that has nothing at all to do with his childhood.
As for the "first prize", I'm not sure what that specifically refers to (first prize in flute-playing, maybe?) The article also notes that his father received a similar "first prize", without elaborating further. Graham87 04:32, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The "first prize", according to the cited sources, was in an annual flute-playing contest held at the school. I've clarified this text in the article during my copy-edit. // ⌘macwhiz (talk) 19:41, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Copy-edit[edit]

During my copy-edit, I excised a fair amount of text that wasn't encyclopedic. Too much of this article read, and still reads, like an editorial review of Rampal's work, rather than a neutral and dispassionate encyclopedia article. // ⌘macwhiz (talk) 19:41, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work. Graham87 04:37, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jean-Pierre Rampal was a flutist, not a flautist. Because we use the English language, the name of the instrument is the flute. Adding an English suffix (ist) to the Italian word (flauto) mixes languages. Flautist may seem worldly but it is incorrect.2601:500:8300:B400:8195:9496:8EC3:8BE8 (talk) 23:45, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, flautist is an exceptable alternative and is most common in British English. Graham87 01:41, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Unquestionably acceptable. Flautist isn't even exceptional. Yes of course ist is an English suffix, but only thanks to French, Latin, and, even earlier, Greek. In English we see it attached to latinate bound bases, thus atheist, baptist, evangelist, hedonist, papist, pugilist, sophist, ventriloquist. But even if we didn't, and if instead flautist were utterly unique, so what? From just one website: 1, 2, 3, 4. Flautist (without italics or scare quotes) is clearly in use within English by literate, adult users of L1 English; thus it's a regular English word, no matter how much you might happen to dislike it. -- Hoary (talk) 02:55, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
While flautist is acceptable, flutist is definitely more common.[1] It is also closer to what he called himself (flûtiste). It is a recorded fact[2] that some flutists prefer not to be flauted for being a flawtist.  --Lambiam 07:51, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well I'm a Brit and I never heard of a flutist. Did he self-identify as a flautist or a flutist? I would point out that his Wikipedia's category is Category:French classical flautists which is a subcategory of Category:Classical flautists by nationality, so anyone determined to persue this would need to start there.--Shantavira|feed me 14:27, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, for the purposes of this article, this really comes down to an WP:ENGVAR determination. One of the handy things about that piece of the MoS is that has a pseudo-hierarchy/enumeration of factors to test the options against. Here I would say both that the MOS:COMMONALITY argument is not strong enough to overwhelm either option, and likewise there are no strong MOS:TIES, considering the article subject is connected first and foremost with the francophone sphere. That leaves us with MOS:RETAIN, which states, in essence, that at this point the wrangling over the options is not justified by the difference in their benefit, and we should merely default to any well-established stable version which has persisted for a significant amount of time and up until any dispute(s) about the options--that is to say, just an import of the the more general WP:STYLEVAR recommendation, adapted to this particular context.
