No point in using tie breaks anymore as they vary between similar tournaments and keep changing over time -- even within the same tournament's history. e.g., head-to-head results are generally used first in double round-robin tournaments in case of two way ties. However, in 2005, this was not done at Linares and Kasparov was given the title unfairly (some would argue) over Topalov.

What date is the tournament? Isn't it soon?--Sonjaaa 08:25, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

This year's edition runs from February 22 (first round February 23) to March 10; players are Kasparov, Anand, Topalov, Leko, Adams, Vallejo Pons and Kasimdzhanov. If you think it's worth putting this in the article, feel free. --Camembert

New Article for individual tournaments?[edit]

I don't think there's enough material to warrant a separate article for each year. If the existing article grows too much, we could do so in the future though. Peter Ballard 01:21, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Out of Date[edit]

The entire discussion of the chess tournament is out of date. Mr Rentero has not sponsored the event for years, and Mexico is no longer the site of half the tournament.

The first category XVIII tourneament was Reggio Emilia 1992, not Linares 1994. Maelstrom

2011?[edit]

I follow chessbase.com pretty regular and haven't noticed any mentions of why Linares didn't occur this year (2011). Shouldn't it have already happened?
