Old discussions[edit]

This is not true Tristan Garell-Jones stood down at the 97 election. Robert Gordon stood for the Conservatives and was defeated.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 163.1.141.16 (talk) 23:47, 15 January 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The council that Wrad represented was Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council (and not Elstree and Borehamwood Parish Council).

Photos[edit]

Does anyone know how to go about getting an image of Claire added here? --Lobster blogster 14:19, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know?[edit]

Depending on how the expansion goes, I think the all party confectionary group fact would make a fantastic WP:DYK. WFCforLife (talk) 18:55, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly, it seems to be a fact from 2001. MikeHobday (talk) 00:28, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Historic facts often appear in DYK. "Did you know that Claire Ward was the Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Chocolate and Confectionery Industry Group from Xxxx to Xxxx?"
I am checking through various sources, but it seems she was Chairman in 2000,[1] and 2002[2] but had stopped being a member by 2007.[3]
I'll do some proper content work a little later, but I guess looking for the date directly will prove fruitless. Hopefully during the course of expanding upon what she has actually done in her three terms to date, we'll get our just desserts. Not the end of the world if we don't, but to achieve a DYK on top of a GA from this effort would be the icing on the cake. WFCforLife (talk) 01:27, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Editing notes[edit]

I am putting this section here as a reminder of things I need to work on. The Barbieri source mentions she came off the NEC in 1995 but our article says she joined that year. Barbieri says she joined at 19 and another source I stumbled across says she served for 3 years - that would fit together with a start date of late 1991/1992 to 1995. I will see if I can track the other source down. Road Wizard (talk) 02:05, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have amended the statement with two new sources; she joined the NEC in 1991 and served for four years until 1995. There is some interesting activity in 1994 with strong criticism of Keith Vaz which resurfaced in the media in 2001 - I will do some more research but it is probably worth including something about it. Road Wizard (talk) 05:14, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Her personal biography says she was born on 9 May 1972 while we have 28 May. Is there an independent source for either date? Road Wizard (talk) 01:00, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. BBC says it was 9 May. Road Wizard (talk) 01:04, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm wondering about best practice in describing an MP's activity in Parliament. Choice of subjects for speeches and questions seems interesting, as does rebellions against the party line. Free votes would also be interesting. But most of the list merely shows that she voted as a Labour MP. Because of my perceived conflict of interest, I won't edit the list, but I put this forwards for discussion. MikeHobday (talk) 09:00, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is no clear guidance on the subject; it depends mainly on the coverage in sources and trying to avoid giving undue weight to any one aspect. WFCforLife has been working on converting the list to prose and it is probably a little too early to decide what to leave in or cut out. Once the section has been completed and sourced we will be better placed to make a decision. Road Wizard (talk) 15:29, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Most biography articles include some details of the subject's family, but only if it can be supported by sources. Family life is generally handled in a few short sentences or a couple of paragraphs unless there has been some extensive coverage of the family in sources (for example, if one family member took the subject to court and sued them for something then a more detailed account of the relationship to the other family member would be required). From the sources I have uncovered so far her parents are mentioned often in their capacity as Labour councillors and especially the father for his failed candidacy for Parliament. As her parents' political activity had a role in her own career development it is definitely worth mentioning them.
The sources mention in passing that she has had at least one child and one of the less reliable sources says she is married. If we can find some more detailed/reliable source material for those points then they may be worth a brief mention.
The only major stumbling block to mentioning family life is if there are conflicts with the Biographies of living persons policy. Road Wizard (talk) 15:29, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't have time to add but relevant sources: [4], [5] and [6] MikeHobday (talk) 10:48, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Synthesis[edit]

H2g2bob, could you explain how Mike's edit in the "Activity in Parliament" constitutes synthesis? A list of that sort should be seen as "working content", in that the edit dramatically improved the article but ideally should be expanded upon. Nonetheless, I don't see how stating that she has spoken on one issue distorts the meaning of stating that she has spoken on others. Regards, WFCforLife (talk) 13:42, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
