Similarity[edit]

I feel I should point out the basic similarity between this page and the entry for the ILP in my book "Politico's Guide to the History of British Political Parties". It would have been better if the original poster had simply stuck to copying out the entry rather than making minor changes which serve only to make the text flow less smoothly. —David Boothroyd - david@election.demon.co.uk

'Independent Labour' = ILP?[edit]

I notice that in the Election articles, there are frequently 'Independent Labour' candidates and MPs. However, there are also often 'Independent Liberals' and 'Independent Conservatives'. Are the 'Independent Labour'-ites necessarily ILP? Doesn't seem to be much traffic on this page, but it's going on my watchlist just in case someone answers someday. "Independent Labour" candidates today are not ILP candidates. Independent Labour used in such a way should not redirect here - indeed, it more helpfully redirects to Independent (politician). of course not, but i meant throughout the period the ILP existed. There are often Independent Labour candidates and MPs, sometimes the ILP is listed too. Is there anywhere where the number and time of ILP'ers in Parliament can be found? BillMasen 15:13, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is no comprehensive list anywhere of ILPers in Parliament. In the period before the formation of the Labour Party the various individuals elected on an independent labour platform is well know - but there were none elected in the period between the formation of ILP formally in 1893 and the formation of the Labour Party in 1900. After this the definition of an ILP MP is rather unclear - specifically whether it refers to those MPs sponsored by the ILP, or those MPs who were also as individuals members of the ILP. For example at the start of the 1929 Parliament there were between 140-160 MPs who were ILP members, 37 of whom were sponsored directly by the ILP. After 1930 the ILP restricted its parliamentary group from all those who held party cards (147 at that time) to those who agreed to be bound by ILP conference decisions (18 MPs). There were further divisions in the period before disaffiliation. In the 1931 General Election the ILP, along with the wider Labour Party was decimated, only 5 ILP MPs were returned - all without support from the Labour Party (James Maxton, George Buchanan [sponsored not by the ILP but the Patternmakers Union], John McGovern, David Kirkwood [all Glasgow] and Richard Wallhead [Merthyr]). After disaffiliation in 1932 Kirkwood remained with the Labour Party and rejoined the PLP, Wallhead rejoined the Labour Party and PLP very shortly afterwards in despair at the ILP's new revolutionary policy. Maxton, Buchanan and McGovern were all re-elected in 1935 and were joined by Campbell Stephen (also Glasgow). Buchanan rejoined the Labour Party in 1939. Maxton died in 1946 (still an MP) and James Carmichael was elected in his place sponsored by the ILP. However, by the end of 1947 Carmichael, Stephen and McGovern all rejoined the Labour Party. No further ILP MPs were elected after this date. Major edit needed[edit]

The paragraphs throughout this piece are uncomfortably long for reading on the internet. Big paragraphs work well on the page but not on screen.

The footnoting is inadequate throughout.

I tried to simplify the structure a bit and to break things into more rational periods, but I don't really have time to pull a full re-write. Somebody should.

A list of notable members would be good, split into 3 columns. The list of chairmen might be best incorporated into a table of conferences.

Henry Musgrove Reade[edit]

Why no mention of Henry Musgrove Reade? He was one of the seven founders of the ILP, and served as the secretary of the Manchester and Salford branch. After twenty years as a prominent Atheist and Socialist, he subsequently rejected Socialism after his religious conversion! [1] DFH (talk) 19:17, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Isle of Man???[edit]

Offshore Island Politics, p. 60, http://books.google.com/books?id=xLhClgF30w4C&pg=PA60, mentions an Independent Labour candidate in 1908. Did the British ILP have a branch there? --Soman (talk) 08:40, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
