Out of curiousity (and I'm honestly curious rather than doubting you), how do you know all those places were named for DeWitt Clinton specifically? As we know, there have been plenty of other branches of Clintons in this country, and I'm just wondering if we know that some of those towns named Clinton might not have been named for local Clintons in those specific areas? I should have mentioned that I moved this stuff off the DeWitt Clinton page. Other than that--heck if I know. :) jengod 02:13, Mar 24, 2004 (UTC)

I added an explanatory note. Ideally something should only be on the list if confirmed, but it may not be historically recorded in every case, and even those that are won't be easily found online. But as my wording indicates (which should probably also be sourced), DeWitt's role in building the Erie Canal made him greatly revered by settlers who were given a market for their farming, and the businessmen in places like Chicago who were made wealthy as middlemen. So chances are very high that DeWitt, or some cases DeWitt and George as a pair, were the namesake for all of the listings. --Dhartung | Talk 05:46, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
