Elizabeth Anderson (nee Garrett) (1836 - 1917) was an English physician. She was the first female English physician. She was also the first female English mayor in 1908 and was sister of Millicent Fawcett.

Death date[edit]

In the first paragraph, it says "(9 June 1836 – 17 December 1917)", whereas later on in the passage, towards the end of the biography section, it says that "She died in 1927 and is buried in Aldeburgh." Question is, which is it? To make matters worse, it appears both statements are lacking a referance as well. Civilised countries[edit]

The article mentions "every civilized country except Spain and Turkey". This rather begs the question of which countries are deemed by Wikipedia to be uncivilised! Can anyone come up with a better way of expressing this? Bluewave 12:50, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, poor choice of words (directly from the Enyclopedia?). I assume this refers to North America, Western- and Middle-Europe and perhaps even Eastern Europe? --Stalfur 17:32, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Suffragette[edit]

The article says that she was a member of the suffragette movement. Is this meaning in general terms the women's suffrage campaign, or the actual WSPU? I was under the impression she was linked more closely with her sister's non violent suffragist movement. Either way, it could possibl do with being cleaned up slightly Ariasne

I had a look in the DNB and it seems that for most of her life EGA was busy with medical stuff. After she retired, they say, "Between 1908 and 1911....she actively supported the Women's Social and Political Union......But by 1912 she had publicly renounced militant tactics in favour of the suffragist approach favoured by her sister Millicent Fawcett." Yes, this article seems to be mostly from the 1911 Encyc Brit and could do with some attention.--HJMG 18:27, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
