County Map Question[edit]

There is a new map of Portage County in the article, File:Portage County labeled.png. I like that it shows the incorporated cities and villages more clearly by shading them blue, but do not like that it also removes / loses some information compared to the old map, File:Map of Portage County Ohio With Municipal and Township Labels.PNG (which the new version is based on). The lost information is chiefly the loss of the Census-designated place Brimfield, Ohio (shown on the old map, not on the new one), but there is also some loss of border information, i.e. Mantua has a small extension on the western edge which has been removed in the new map and numerous slightly crooked borders in the original are now smooothed out and straight.

The old map is from the US Census Bureau, cropped by me and with extraneous information removed and the scale and north arrow added. Since I am niot a neutral party, I thought I would bring up the map question here for others to comment on. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:12, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I went through the new map and checked it with some other maps and corrected some of the things you listed, including the marking of the Brimfield CDP and adjusting the boundaries of Mantua village, Garrettsville, and Mogadore. Most of the "crooked lines" outside of that are the result of pixelation on the census map because of how it was positioned rather than an actual crooked border as far as every other map shows. Again, I checked several sources to verify what is on the map and have uploaded a new version, so please check it and let me know of any changes that need to be made. Thanks for the quick reply. The original map is a PDF and I used "print screen" at 200% to get the image. WHen I enlarged it further still, most of the remaining "crookedness" goes away, but the northern border between Aurora and Mantua Twp is still "squiggly" on the original, even at 1200%, and there are slight bumps between Charlestown Twp and both Ravenna Twp and Paris Twp. Perhaps these are surveying errors - the Ohio/Indiana border was to be a straight line but when it was surveyed there were various small errors made (working in the woods at midnight in te early 1800's) and so it is very slightly zig-zaggy (if that is a word). My only other suggestion would be to think about opening an account on Wikimedia Commons for your nice maps, so that all Wiki projects in all languages can use them, not just the english Wikipedia. Thanks...I think I will go ahead and open an account on Wikipedia commons so the maps can be used elsewhere. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks also for the pdf of the census bureau maps. I cross referenced the city of Aurora website [2] and it doesn't have that unusual zig-zag at the top of the border with Mantua township. Interestingly enough, my Google Earth has a small indentation in Aurora's boundaries at that same location, so I'm not sure what's up. It seems odd to me that such a boundary would exist given the satellite view of the area and the obvious property lines. I can totally appreciate your attention to detail, but in the context of this map I don't think this and the other little irregularities are that significant. If we had individual maps of each township or city then I would be all for the detail, but the map of the county is just to give people a general idea. --JonRidinger 02:38, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hatnote[edit]

While the village of Portage, Ohio obviously has a similar name, I removed the hatnote on this article since it is very clear that the article is about a county, not a village. That's on top of the fact that Portage, Ohio is a largely unknown village of just 438 people vs. a county of 163,000 people. I also checked the viewer traffic for the two articles and Portage, Ohio has gotten 241 hits in the last 30 days while this article had 1,991 in the same time period. Portage County is more likely to be confused with Portage County, Wisconsin than the village of Portage. Hatnotes are very useful tools, but should only be used if there is an obvious potential for confusion, say, if Portage, Ohio was a large, well-known city. Now, having the hatnote in the Portage, Ohio article is justified since people may be looking for the county, but seems unlikely given the viewer traffic that people who come to this article are looking for the village. --JonRidinger (talk) 00:06, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
