Biased terms[edit]

This article lacks in-line citations and freely uses biased terms casually, such as "bonus" and "inconvenient." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.19.197.84 (talk) 05:59, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Correct name in title[edit]

Since the island's name is Belmont Island, shouldn't the article be called "Belmont Island." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clydemen (talkcontribs) 01:12, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We tend to use the common name of a subject for its article title, which doesn't necessarily have to be the official name. I guess you could make the argument that this applies here, although I'm not sure how true that would be.  — daranzt ] 02:00, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, US NOAA nautical chart 12335, 47th ed last updated July 31st 2023, labels it Belmont Island, and Belmont Island only. In my book, that's very authoritative - especially in and around maritime environments. 176.10.232.235 (talk) 19:21, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was tempted to simply change the title to reflect the correct name. But not wanting to be accused of vandalizing the article I decided to simply make my argument for changing the title to Belmont Island here. There is no such place as "U Thant Island." The one unique correct name for the island is Belmont Island. My own three maps of NYC show this as "Belmont Island." They are dated 1939, 1982 and 2014. Google maps also shows this as "Belmont Island. Those facts alone should be sufficient to change the title to Belmont Island. If you enter the search term in Google maps "Uthant Island" it will direct you to Belmont Island but it is still labeled as "Belmont Island," it's correct name. The title of any encyclopedia article about a place should include the actual name of a place not a nickname "unofficially" given to the Island by anyone including a religious cult. If Wikipedia uses nicknames instead of correct names for places simply because some person or group decides they don't want to use the correct name for a place then what would stop me from renaming Long Island "Hillary Clinton Island" and then go change the Wikipedia article to reflect that? Only correct names should be used in Encyclopedia articles not nicknames or attributed names. Instead, searches using nicknames should simply redirect to the article and a notation in the summary should inform people that the nickname is not the correct name. Why? Because people use Wikipedia to learn about things. If you use the incorrect name in a title then everyone who encounters the article will assume that is the correct name. Wikipedia or any encyclopedia should always education with correct information not present misinformation as fact or imply it as fact. Simply stating in the first line what the correct official name is, isn't good enough. People go by first impressions. Also having the wrong name in the title confuses students as well. Perhaps not College or maybe not high school students. But frankly I am tired of explaining to my 9 year old that the name in a Wikipedia title isn't the real name of the person, place or thing that the article is about.

City official name vs federal and state official name[edit]

It appears that "U Thant Island" is actually used for official city purposes, while "Belmont Island" is still used for federal (and possibly state) purposes.--Pharos (talk) 21:05, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
