Untitled[edit]

Please change the Spanish Name of the page. The link in spanish is called "Neuva Granada" (sic.), but "neuva" actually don't exist as spanish word. I guess that is a confussion for "Nueva Granada", the real name, please change (Any book on the colonial spanish empire swows to you this laughably mistake)

-Changed "port city of Granada", since Granada is landlocked.

Title of Article[edit]

I think this article should be named Viceroyalty of New Granada, with the title New Kingdom of Granada mentioned in bold in the lead paragraph, if it can be substantiated. We are talking about one of the Viceroyalties of the Spanish colonies, and the articles for other Viceroyalties match the format Viceroyalty of X, which means that my proposal would bring this viceroyalty article into the same naming system as the others, a clarifying improvement, I think. In addition, I think Viceroyalty of New Granada is a much more commonly used name: the Spanish wikipedia article has Virreinato de Nueva Granada as it's title; nowhere do our Spanish collegues use Nuevo Reino de Granada. Finally, a google search returns 511 results for "New Kingdom of Granada" [1] and 16,400 results for "Viceroyalty of New Granda" [2] Erudy 17:48, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd tend to agree with you on that count. As implied here and explained in the Spanish version of Wikipedia, the New Kingdom of Granada was one of the original colonial names for the area currently known as Colombia (more or less), and it remained in use for a long time. But that was before the Viceroyalty (including territories that were not part of the New Kingdom) was formally created in the 18th century. Both names probably remained in use in some form, or even overlapped (you could say that the New Kingdom was one of the constituent parts of the Viceroyalty), but a Viceroyalty is not identical to a "New Kingdom". Still, we could either create different articles for each (one specifically for the Viceroyalty and another for the New Kingdom, for example), or just group them all under a generic "New Granada (South America)" heading or so. Let's take the two-article approach; that's the structure on the Spanish wiki and I think it makes sense. Interestingly, there's already an stubbish article called Nuevo Reino de Granada in the English wikipedia...it could easily be enlarged by translating materials from es:Nuevo Reino de Granada, which I might undertake myself. In any case, I'm going to change the title of this article back to Viceroyalty of New Granda

That's fine by me, and it would indeed be a good idea to translate information from the two Spanish wiki articles, definitely. I've gone and made some further edits though, such as moving some of the information that was originally in this article, in order to try and give a certain amount of relevant content to each. That was for the royal standards, which represented the monarch in official processions and to which the populace swore fidelity on the ascension of a new king to the throne, but that does not mean that other coat of arms were not granted to the various provinces, cities, or kingdoms. I think we can keep the unique coat of arms in the article, instead of just plastering a generic banner for any and all overseas Spanish possession, without causing confusion. IMPRECISE WORDING

There is a paragraph containing "Sierra's relatives among the Indians took up arms against the rebels to avenge his death."
